API and HighStrength Rods

Full-Integrated
Manufacturing
Process

Both the API and the high-strength sucker rod lines

are manufactured by means of a rigorous quality
assurance system that complies with ISO 9001:2000
and API Q1 standards.

From the production of steel as raw material to the production

of the sucker rods, the entire process takes place in Tenaris
plants. Within these plants, Tenaris produces the entire line of
API sucker rods, progressive cavity pumping (PCPRod) rods
and its range of premium connection products. They efficiently
respond to extreme conditions such as high loads, corrosive
environments and applications where tubing-rod friction
control is required.

Both API and high strength

sucker rods are manufactured
from high-quality steel bars.
During the manufacturing
process all of the rods are
straightened and inspected
superficially over their entire
length by a set of Non
Destructive Testing (NDT)
equipment that verifies the
presence of transversal and
longitudinal defects, if any, in
accordance with API criteria.
Internal US (ultrasonic) tests
are also performed.

" Sucker Rods Rolling Plant. San Luis. Argentina.

During the forging process,

the rod ends are heated in
induction furnaces, so that
the ends can then be shaped
in successive forging passes.
This ensures optimal fatigue
resistance of the forged zone.

Tenaris is the only company in the world that

manufactures sucker rods and couplings in a fully
integrated way. In its plants in Argentina and Brazil,
it develops special products for each type of need.

After being inspected they are

thermally treated over their
entire length in specially
designed furnaces to obtain
uniform mechanical and
metallurgical properties
throughout the rod. The
high-strength rods undergo
different thermal treatments,
depending on the desired
grade, in order to obtain the
specified metallographic
structure and mechanical
properties.

Once the rods have been

thermally treated, they
undergo a shot pinning
process that compresses the
external fibres thereby
improving fatigue resistance.
Before machining, the rod
ends are inspected on a bench.
Machining and threading
processes are performed in
state-of-the-art CNC
(Computerized Numeric
Control) equipment which
allows an excellent surface
finish on the joint seals.
Threads are obtained by
means of cold rolling to
ensure greater fatigue
resistance. Finally, before
packaging, the rods are
protected with an
oil-soluble paint that prevents
the oxidation during
transport and storage.

Tenaris

High-Strength
Sucker Rods
Greater mechanical strength: used for deep wells
and/or high loads.
! Full scale testing lab. Campana, Argentina.

Tenaris has a line of high-mechanical-strength rods with three

different options to suit different service conditions.
Ultra High-Strength (UHS-NR) Sucker Rods
The UHS-NR sucker rods is one of the alternatives available,
manufactured in AISI 4330 Mod. alloy steel. Its mechanical
properties are obtained through a normalized and tempered
heat treatment, which allows the rod to reach flow and
breaking properties above the API standards. Due to its greater
fatigue resistance, it can reliably increase the extraction depths
and flow rates.
It is recommended for non-corrosive wells with very high loads.

Plus Rods
The Plus sucker rod is
another alternative for high
loads. This product undergoes
an induction-based surfacetempering heat treatment.
This process generates a
binary structure where the
external surface is quenched
whereas the core remains
untempered.
Since the external layer has
lower density (martensite)
than the core, a permanent
state of compression is
produced in the periphery,
which is the determining
factor for high fatigue
resistance.

Maximum Stress (ksi)

It is recommended for
services in deep wells with
high flow rates effectively
inhibited.

High-Strength Sucker Rods,

Critical Service (MMS-NR)
This product is manufactured
in a specially developed steel
to provide the required high
mechanical strength, but
reducing susceptibility to
hydrogen-induced embrittlement (SSC Sulphide Stress
Cracking). This is a phenomenon increasingly present
in wells under secondary
recovery by means of water
injection. It is a chromiummolybdenum alloy steel that
contains no nickel. Its heat
treatment is normalized and
tempered.
It is recommended for
services in deep wells with
high loads, and inhibiting
is recommended to improve
its performance.

Accessories
A broad range of products of the highest quality
to complete the pumping string.
API Couplings:
T and Spray Metal
The couplings are manufactured from seamless steel
pipes produced by Tenaris.
The T and Spray Metal (SM)
couplings combine the steel
quality with the cold-rolled
thread, which gives them
greater fatigue resistance.
Spray Metal is a superficial
hardening process in which a
nickel, chrome, boron and
silicon based powder is
applied on the base metal and
later melted, resulting in a
hard, dense and uniform
surface with a very low
friction coefficient and high
corrosion resistance.

Tenaris

Coupling machining is
performed in modern CNC
(Computerized Numeric
Control) lathes for both
types of product.
The entire line of class T,
Spray Metal, combination
couplings (cross over
couplings) and polished rod
and sinker bar couplings are
produced in reduced SH
(slim hole) diameters as well
as in the normal FS (full size)
diameter.
Pony Rods
In compliance with the same
quality requirements
applicable to the rods, pony
rods measuring 1, 2, 4, 6, 8,
and 12 feet are available
for each steel grade and
diameter. Other lengths are
also manufactured in
accordance with customers
specifications.

High-Strength Couplings
(UHS)
This product was developed
to address customers need to
solve the growing problem
caused by fatigue breaking in
couplings, mainly in wells
using high-strength rods or in
wells using reduced diameter
SH (slim hole) couplings.
The couplings are manufactured from alloy steels with
quenching and tempering
heat treatment. Their design
allows them to withstand
high loads during well service.
They are recommended in
combination with any highstrength or Grade D sucker
rods, working under very high
load conditions.

! Sinker bars.

! Polished rods.

Sinker Bars
This product is necessary in
order to maintain an optimized string design, so as to
avoid premature failures in
the installation. It is very
effective for reducing failures
in the rod body, pins and
coupling, which occur due to
the effect of compression
and buckling in the string.

Polished Rods
Tenaris offers several types
of low- and medium- alloy
steel polished rods with an
excellent surface finish to
ensure the proper seal in the
stuffing box.

Special Products
Special solutions to increase rod string life
and performance.
Rod Guides
Tenaris has a wide range of rod guides and materials for both,
rod pumping and PCP. Tenaris offers different materials
adaptable to different fluid conditions, as well as to high or low
bottom-hole temperatures. These guides are injected directly on
the rods, which impart a high degree of separation resistance,
reducing the probability of displacement and thus becoming a
true protection for the tubing and for the rod itself.
It has been proved that their use in wells significantly increases the
life of the tubing and of the rods, reducing wear with a consequent
reduction in repair interventions and other operating costs.
Combined with the use of rod rotators, they also allow effective
paraffin control.

! Guides for PCP at low

temperatures.

! Guides for beam pumping

at high temperatures.

The sinker bars are located

at the end of the string,
above the pump, to keep it
fully subjected to tensile
loads during the pumping
cycle. This minimizes the
compression generated on
the rods during the pumping
downstroke.

For corrosive services,

stainless steels in the AISI 304
and 316 series are available,
as well as steels with hard
chrome and Spray Metal
coatings. Their alternatives
are manufactured in various
lengths and diameters of
1 1/4 and 1 1/2, according
to customers specifications.

They are manufactured in

compliance with the API
standard in diameters from
1 1/4 to 2 in steels at the
customers request, with
breaking strengths of 65,000
psi or 90,000 psi. A proprietary
design alternative is also
available in 1 1/8 with a
7/8 pin, for wells with 2 7/8
tubing, pumping high
flow rates.
