Haddonfield residents might be

seeing a lot of orange and white
painting the town. Traffic signs
and cones have been put up on
some of the towns roads, indicating construction. This is due to
Haddonfields long-awaited water
and sewer utility infrastructures
being improved upon and replaced.
New Jersey American Water
and the borough have been working together on several water and
sewer main projects that will improve service to residents. NJAW
is spending approximately $3.7
million to replace more than two
miles of pipe that is near the end
of its useful life, and the Haddonfield Roads Program will go into
effect after to repave the roads.
Know we are doing the projects to prevent failures. Infrastructures get old and need to be

updated. The work we are doing

is with close coordination in the
town with their road paving program, said Carmen Tierno, the
senior director of New Jersey
American Water's Southwest Operations.
You need to keep updating
things so they keep working efficiently. Unfortunately, we hadnt
been doing that historically,
which drove us to sell the water
and sewer utility. They are doing
it much faster than we (the town)
could have hoped, Commissioner of Public Works John
Moscatelli said.
NJAW and the borough are
working together on these projects. NJAW is taking care of the
infrastructure
improvements,
and the borough is taking care of
the road improvements after.

From crafting to bugs, library

packs in summer programming
During renovations, programs being held at Borough Hall

Haddonfield is a town well
known for its diverse offerings for
residents and visitors. However,
not all are free, and those things
can add up, especially for families
with children.
With the Haddonfield Public
Library, many programs are offered free for residents.
This summer the library is offering a multitude of free programs for children and teens,
ranging from crafts to reading to
science.
During the library renovations, programming for children
is being held at Borough Hall in
the auditorium during the daytime. Teen craft events are also
being held at Borough Hall in
room 201.
Haddonfield library teen programs are running through the
first week of August. Teen programs are for teens 12 to 18 years
old, or sixth graders through high
school seniors.
When teens attend the summer
teen programs, they are put into a
drawing for a gift certificate at
one of the downtown eateries.
This summer, the library is of-

fering teen craft events, held in

room 201 at Borough Hall on Monday afternoons at 3 p.m. They include: July 27, a nail art event
where you can use different nail
polished to paint your nails and
decorate them with some nail art;
and Aug. 3, the creation and decoration of a collage or memory box
to fill with summer memories.
We provide all of the supplies.
We just encourage the teens to
come out and have a good time.
They can bring out their own
stuff if they want, but we have
enough supplies for everyone as
well, Erica Coonelly, library teen
coordinator, said.
For teen programs, the library
would like people to pre-register,
however walk-ins are accepted.
Register at the library or
email me, but it is not mandatory, Coonelly said.
Also, on Monday nights from 6
p.m. to 8 p.m. teens can speak to
Coonelly to learn about the new
digital programs at the library.
They can come in anytime,
but I will be there Monday
nights, Coonelly said.
Coonellys favorite part of the
teen programs are seeing them
come out and have fun with one
another. She hopes those who at-

tend take away the knowledge

that the library is more than just
taking out books.
She also hopes that teens get involved with the librarys Teen Advisory Board, which is on hold

For children, summer programing runs until the end of August. The programs run in different age groups.
Some of the summer programs
include science classes such as
Super Scientists and Junior Scientists; art classes by Paint a
Treasure and Abrakadoodle; an
Adventure Aquarium visit on
Aug. 7; and The Bug Lady visit on
Aug. 28. Students must preregister for all of the summer programs.
For the younger crowd, the library offers Baby Bookworms,
Toddler Time and Little Listeners. Baby Bookworms must be
registered for and the summer is
full. The fall still has open spots.
Toddler Time and Little Listeners
require no registration.

The deadline to run for school
board this November is quickly
approaching.
Residents interested in running for school board must file
with the Camden County Clerks
Office by Monday, July 27 to have
their name on the ballot in Novembers election. All petitions
must be filed with Camden County Clerk Joseph Ripas office on or
before 4 p.m. on July 27. Petitions
can be either mailed to The Office
of the Camden County Clerk, P.O.
Box 150 Camden, NJ 08101 or submitted in-person at the Camden
County Courthouse, Room 102,
520 Market St. in Camden from

8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday

through Friday.
Requirements for board membership include:
Must be a United States citizen
Must be at least 18 years old
Must be able to read and write
Must be a resident of the municipality running in for at least
one year
Must not be holding any other
elected office or another office in
the local municipality and county
Have no claim, interest in or
contract with the board of education
Must not be disqualified for
conviction of crimes
Each candidate must complete
a nomination petition including

the signatures of at least 10 registered voters living in the district.

Candidates must also adhere to
all state requirements to file campaign-expense reports with the

It got us thinking, though: We have
been presenting back-to-school coverage in The Sun for quite awhile now, in
many different towns, but how can we
make this coverage better?
Our quick answer by being better

So, even though the beginning of the
next school year is the last thing on

your brain or at least in part of your

spend outside having fun with
friends and family, especially at
night when the day cools down
and the sunlight changes to stars
and streetlights. In Haddonfield,
ladies can enjoy their weeknight
with family and friends in the
downtown area for the first summertime Girls Night Out!
event.
The Partnership for Haddonfield will once again host Girls
Night Out! featuring a fun-filled
night of shopping, dining and relaxing on Thursday, July 23 from
5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Girls Night Out!
is a free event for ladies to enjoy
in-store discounts, food and
music by DJ Frank Staff at Kings
Court and Haddy Lane.
Its a nice, festive time in
town, and I think it will be a fun
summer night, said Remi Fortunato, retail recruiter for the Partnership for Haddonfield.
Girls Night Out! has been
going on for more than five years
in Haddonfield, usually twice a

year once in the spring and once

in the fall. It was started as a fun
way for mothers, daughters,
grandmothers, sisters and friends
to enjoy a special night together
while dining, shopping and enjoying downtown promotions.
For downtown Haddonfield,
this is the first time the event is
taking place during mid-summer.
The retail shops were thinking it would be nice to have a midweek break for ladies during the
summer. Usually, people go to the
Shore for the weekend; this is an
added thing to do while youre
home during the week, Fortunato said.
This summertime ladies event
is free for women of all ages.
There is no age limit. Ive
taken my 13 year old and they
have candy and stuff for them as
well, Fortunato said.
Stores on Ellis Street, Kings
Court, Mechanic Street, Shops at
116 Kings Highway and Tanner
Street are participating. Sales include discounts, percentages off,
complimentary refreshments and
services.

The event isnt just about the

Fortunatos favorite part of the
night is seeing the streets come
alive with women and seeing
everyone socializing. She hopes
those who come take away not
only good deals, but realize Haddonfield is a great place to be and
shop.
I hope they see it not just as
Girls Night Out!, but what a
great town it is, Fortunato said.

Freeholder Board submits

damage assessment
By Freeholder Michelle Gentek
On June 23, like
many of my neighbors, my home was
damaged and we
lost power for several days due to a
severe super storm
that tore through
the region. Since
that day, the Camden County Office
of Emergency Management has
been working diligently with our
local, state and federal partners to
aggregate the total damage done
by this extreme weather event. At
this point, we are claiming more
than $4 million for reimbursement from the federal government in both public and
individual assistance for the destruction created by high winds
and heavy rains.
The four affected counties of
Camden, Atlantic, Gloucester and
Burlington
have
a
total
damage assessment of over $15
million, which surpasses all baselines for Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA)
support. Gov. Chris Christie has
signed off on a Major Disaster
Declaration and sent it through
FEMA to be signed by President
Barack Obama for federal assistance.
Our professionals have been
surveying the scope of the
damage for weeks coming up with
a real time assessment of damages with local officials, state police and FEMA to justify
reimbursement and federal assistance. This storm event was one
of the worst in scope and severity
for Camden County in modern
era and was the catalyst for significant damage to homeowners and
businesses.

In total thousands
of
trees
were
brought down by
straight-line winds
and power was cut
off to thousands of
residents in the aftermath of the
storm. All public
and private entities
had significant disruptions in their service for up to
10 days from the minute the storm
touched down.
To put this storm into perspective, there were more than 1,000
fire calls throughout the county
that afternoon, compared to an average day of 100 calls for service.
Furthermore, the department of
Public Safety took in 3,522 calls for
service in a 54 hour period during
Hurricane Sandy. On June 23, in a
six hour window, dispatchers took
in almost 70 percent of that volume by recording 2,432 total calls.
I want to thank our first responders for the extraordinary effort
they made during this super
storm and the work that continues to be done by our Office of
Emergency Management together
with all of our partners. My hope
is that the FEMA assistance
process is expedited and done as
quickly as possible so towns, businesses and residents can have
peace of mind and continue to
recover.

Library renovations, expansion underway

The Library will be open Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 9
p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and
Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays the library will be closed.

working on demolition at 60 Haddon Avenue. The library has an
annex at 123 Kings Highway East.
The Kings Highway service point
offers borrowing of selected collections in higher demand; computer services and instruction;
and some childrens and teen collections. The librarys bookdrops
have moved to behind 123 Kings
Highway. There is also a mail and
book slot on the front door. The library is next to the Haddonfield
Running Company, which has
signs on the front and back of its
building.

Temporary library cards

Residents of Haddonfield may

obtain temporary library cards at

the Camden County Library system, Cherry Hill Public Library
and the Haddon Heights Public
Library. These library cards will
be in effect during the time of the
renovation. Haddonfield residents should take photo-identification to these libraries to obtain

We Love Our Library

The HPL Library Board of
Trustees launched the We Love
Our Library campaign to provide fundraising for the librarys
long awaited expansion and renovation.
The Library Board is partnering with the Borough of Haddonfield to upgrade the library. The
Borough Commissioners will pay
for the improvements that will
make the library handicapped accessible, as well as some building

upgrades such as a new roof,

heating renovation, etc. The Library Board is conducting the
campaign to pay for enhancements to the building to allow it
to operate as a 21st century library.

donor recognition element and a
spark igniting the We Love Our

Athletic Award at Washington College
Washington College senior
swimmer Greg Lee, Haddonfield
resident and graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School, was
named one of two male co-winners of the college's Senior Athletic Award, given annually to the
school's top graduating senior
male and female student-athletes,
at an awards ceremony.
Lee, who also received an Athletics Leadership Award from the
school's Student Government Association, will leave Washington
College as a 16-time medalist at
Centennial Conference Championship meets. He is the school
record holder in both butterfly
events and is a member of four
school-record relay teams. He has
qualified for College Swim Coaches Association of America Schol-

ar All-American status for the

second time and is a three-time
team MVP and three-time Centennial Conference Academic
Honor Roll qualifier.
Lee's final collegiate swimming
performance was an impressive
one as he won gold in the 100 and
200 butterfly, silver in the 200 and
400 freestyle relays, and bronze in
the 200 and 400 medley relays and

placed sixth in the 200 individual

medley at the 2015 Centennial
Conference Championships in
February.
His
performance
helped lead the Shoremen to their
first second-place finish at the
conference championships in 20
years. The Shoremen went 9-1 in
dual meets this past winter for
the second year in a row, tying
their most winning season ever.

The library offers a lot of programs throughout the year. The
summer programs are great because it brings a lot of kids in the
library. We see a lot of new patrons coming in and checking out
a lot of books; it is great in the
summer, Bilodeau said.
When the renovations are complete, the library will have larger
areas for both teens and children,
and a space just for teens.
What we are hoping for is to
have a relaxed atmosphere for

teens to work on projects and to

have a place to hang out after
school, Coonelly said.
As for the children, Bilodeau
said they will have a larger space
and possibly maker spaces.
Through those, she hopes to offer
more childrens programs like
Lego or Play-Doh events.
I think well be able to offer a
lot of really fun programs for the
kids, Bilodeau said.
All of the programing is free
and provided by the Friends of
the Library.
Id like to thank the staff at
the borough for accommodating
the summer programs while
were under renovations. I really
appreciate it, Bilodeau said.

Paul V. Fagan Jr. passed away
on July 9 at the age of 88. Of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Bridgewater Township, he died peacefully at the Country House in Wilmington after a long illness.
He was the devoted father of

Ottsville, Pa., Anna (Nancy)
Fagan of Santa Cruz de Tenerife,

Fagan. He was the beloved son of

Born in Newark, Paul grew up

family as a self-taught jazz pianist.
He also enjoyed painting scenes
inspired by his frequent travels.
Paul was a congregant of St. Elizabeth Church, and a member of
the American Chemical Society.
Family and friends were invited to visitation at Layton Funeral
Home, Bedminster Township, on
July 14 and Funeral Mass at St.
Elizabeth Church, Far Hills, on
July 15. Interment was at Holy
Cross Cemetery, Basking Ridge.

Brian M. Ronayne, of Easton,
Md., and formerly of Haddonfield, passed away on July 10. He
was the son of John and Ann
Ronayne. He is survived by his
beloved wife of 51 years Marie
Eileen Ronayne; three children
Ann Marie Buckley (husband
Dave), Colleen Eberhardt (husband Dale) and Brian Sean Ronayne (wife Erin); five grandchildren, Brandon and Courtney
Eberhardt, Brian, Aidan and
Pierce Ronayne; and brother
John Ronayne as well as nieces
and nephews.
Brian was a loving husband,
devoted father and gracious caring grandfather. As an accomplished student athlete, Brian
was a top student at Gonzaga
Prep, St. Joseph Prep and St.
Josephs University where he was
captain of the varsity crew team
and was elected as an alternate to
the 1964 Olympic team.
In business, he successfully
built a prosperous business with
Knecht Co. He was an accomplished manufacturers represen-

tative with Foremost Manufacturing and an operations and project

manager with Johnson Controls
in Philadelphia. He supported his
local parish of 40 years, Christ
the King Parish, and was a volunteer and coach with the Haddonfield recreational sports, coaching football, baseball and softball.
Brian was an equally supportive grandfather who was a staple
at his grandchildrens school concerts, activities and athletic
events. Brian was an engaged father, husband, and coach and
mentor to many.
His loving presence, encouragement, calm demeanor and quiet
leadership will be greatly missed.
We are forever grateful for his unconditional love and support. We
will miss you. May God hold you
in the palm of His hand.
A mass of celebration was held
on July 20 at Christ the King

Harriet Selma Schweigart (nee
Belk), a lifelong Haddonfield resident, passed peacefully on July 6
at the age of 90. She was daughter
to the late Herman and Jeanette
Belk and wife to the late John W.
Schweigart, known professionally as "The Great Scott." Harriett
was the oldest of four siblings,
nurtured to become a woman of
her time, smart, strong and often
stubborn, through her businessminded family.
She is survived by her children, Susan Gill (Ted) of Medford
and Sarasota, Fla., Margo Campbell (Gary) of Sarasota, Fla. and
John David (Kathy) of Haddonfield and loving grandmother
"Ema" to her granddaughters,
Cydney Penza and Martine
Quigley (Dan), and grandsons.
Ryan Long (Nicole), Neil Shandles and Zack Schweigart.
She is also survived by her
brother, Leonard Belk (Susan) of
Morrestown, and sisters, Evelyn
White (late husband Alvin) of
Bonita Springs, Fla., and the late
Betty Darnell (late husband Billy)

along with wonderful nieces and

nephews.
She would tell us, "OK, so the
world won't come to an end."
Mom, a big part of our world did
come to an end, and we will miss
your advice, guidance and most of

Louise Taylor

Louise Taylor (Odgers), of Mt.
Laurel and Sarasota, Fla., and a
long-time resident of Medford,
passed away peacefully at Samaritan Hospice in Mt. Holly on July
11 at the age of 80.
Louise was born May 5, 1935, in
Altoona, Pa., to Harold L. and
Lorena May Odgers and raised in
Ardmore, Pa. She was a graduate
of Lower Merion High School, in
Bala Cynwyd, Pa. Louise was an
avid bridge and tennis player, and
loved music. She was violinist for
the Burlington County Pops Orchestra and was organist at Lakes
Community Chapel in Lake Pine
for many years.
Louise was pre-deceased by the
late Clifton R. Taylor Jr., and by
their son Clifton R. Taylor, III
both of Medford. She is survived
by her daughter, Debra Leonard
(nee Taylor) and her husband
John F. Leonard of Haddonfield,
and by her son Scott D. Taylor
and his wife Michelle Taylor (nee
Clayton) of Medford. She had
four loving grandchildren, R.
Paul Sandmeyer III, Rebecca
Klare Sandmeyer, Daniel Clayton
Taylor and Andrew Clayton Taylor. Louise is also survived by her
partner Gerald P. Scotko of Mt.
Laurel and his loving family, and
her brother Joseph Odgers and
his wife Peggy.
Louise was thankful for her
faith in the Lord and often said,
He has blessed me beyond measure.
A viewing was held July 14 and
15 at the Bradley Funeral Home.
Funeral services were July 15. Interment followed at Odd Fellows

The water infrastructure improvements will ensure Haddonfield residents continue to enjoy
safe, reliable water and wastewater services. Residents might
see improved water pressure and
reduced sewer blockages. It will
also help with fire departments
abilities.
By going ahead and doing
these jobs proactively, we prevent
unforeseen failures and road
damage. It ensures that it doesnt

get damaged by failure later on,

Tierno said.
It helps to keep the water and
sewer flowing and running properly so residents dont have service interruptions, Moscatelli
said.
The roads that are being affected are Grove Street, between Lake
Street and East Kings Highway;
Lakeview Avenue, between Centre Street and Cooper River; West
Euclid Avenue, from West End
Avenue to Avondale Avenue; and
Douglas Avenue and East Park
Avenue at Lincoln Avenue. Improvements include replacement
of clay and unlined pipe, the
cleaning of sediment, adding cement lining, and the use of cement-lined iron pipe and PVC

also kept in close communication
through letters, postcards and
door-to-door inspectors.
The infrastructure improvements will be in service by the
end of August with temporary
paving. The final road restoration
will be completed this fall by the
borough, except for Grove Street,
which is a county road and a
county project.
We wait several weeks for
things to settle, for traffic to compact it a little, before final
paving, Tierno said.
Residents will receive communication about the schedule for
paving in the fall as parts of the
streets will once again be closed.
Grove Street repaving has been

delayed, according to Moscatelli,

as the county ran into some funding and contracting issues. The
borough is working with the
county to get the street done, but
there is no schedule as of yet.
Those are just the visual projects that NJAW is working on. It
is also working on other infrastructure work at the sewer
pumping stations.
It might not be visible, but we
are really focused on improving
operations in town, Tierno said.
NJAW isnt the only one focused on improving the town.
Moscatelli said the Haddonfield
Roads Program is going to start
increasing the number of roads it
is working on next year as the
borough can do it now without
borrowing money.
As time goes on, well make a
bigger impact, getting these roads
in terrible condition taken care
of. Well be accelerating that, and
in four to five years be in a much
better position, Moscatelli said.
