Event Ad

Date: May 16, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: Microsoft Word
Description: A color flier to promote a fictional benefit event (Battle of the Bands) for
The Fender Music Foundation, designed on Microsoft Word. The Message is that NYU
Steinhardts Dept. of Music and Performing Arts Professions is sponsoring a benefit
event, Battle of the Bands, for The Fender Music Foundation to support music education.
I would like the audience to attend this hip event while also being able promoting a good
cause. My audience is young adults and adults willing to support music education while
appreciating and enjoying some local musicians and their music.
Objectives: Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Choose a color
scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience. Learn to use only Word
design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop
Process: After deciding on an image to use, I scanned it in at 300dpi using my Epson
Scanner so if I enlarged it it would be around 150ppi. I then went into Photoshop to make
sure it was an acceptable image size. Since, it was a tad to large I reduced the resolution
to 290 pixels/inch in Photoshop and then inserted it into my document on Microsoft
word. I then made the image the background of the flier by enlarging it and made sure
it was full-bleed and in the position I wanted. Then after I added in all the other design
elements and completed my design, I gathered critiques. The critiques helped me quite
a bit, I fixed all the alignment issues and print errors having to do with contrast and
color. After I had finalized my design, I saved it as an Adobe PDF and printed it. I then
trimmed the edges, I had a hard time with this due to a dull blade on my exacto knife.

Brochure

Date: July 12, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop
Description: A two sided (duplex) offset folding brochure. My message is to come take
guitar lessons at Birmingham Music Shop! It is easy, fun, and enjoyable for everyone. The
audience is the general public, those interested in taking guitar lessons.
Objectives: Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original, new logo
and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality
images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped
in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of
original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders. Trim for a full bleed
and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process: After setting up the offset layout in Adobe InDesign, I began designing a
brochure about Guitar Lessons available at a music shop. After sketching my basic ideas,
I started and traced a guitar image using the pen tool. I place it so that half would be
on the front cover and half still be visible on the inside when the brochure was opened.
I then choose some free images that I thought would go along well with my message/
purpose, placed them, edited them accordingly, and then re-linked them. I then created a
logo in Adobe Illustrator for the music shop and my brochure. I had a general idea where
I wanted my body copy and, after writing it, placed that in my design. I added other
elements. like geometric shapes to add some visual interest and assist my color scheme.

Montage

Date: May 31, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: Photoshop
Description: An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images,
and the use of typography. For my message, I wanted to share this insight and quote I
love with others, that they really are important days in your life, the turning points. The
audience is the general public and people who, or want to, embrace life.
Objectives: Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow, unify a
layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message, and learn to blend two
or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop
skills for layout with multiple elements, use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the
image, and apply typography principles.
Process: I first started out by scouting for potential images and which would fit best
with the inspirational quote i was intending to use. After finding several I could use, I
started imagining where I would position the quote and going over the benefits of each
option. After narrowing it down to two images, I began designing two different designs in
Photoshop and intended to choose the better one after each was done. After editing and
designing the images, although I liked one over the other, one did portray my message far
better and was more visually appealing. Now that I had decided which design to pursue
and refine, I played around with the typography, its effects, and blending of the second
image on top of the background image by using the brush tool on the layers mask in
Photoshop in order to make sure it looked how I wanted.

Business Card

Date: June 14, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: Adobe Illustrator
Description: A personal business card. I am trying to market myself as a clean, organized,
and capable individual to my audience, potential employers.
Objectives: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign, create a new logo to fit a
company or personal image, do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs, and
dont use photos or live trace. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business
card. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy and keep designs simple with light
watermarks and drop shadows and plenty of white space.
Process: After researching different ideals for inspiration, I sketched a few ideas for
my personal logo then designed it in Adobe Illustrator and used it in my design for my
business card. I adjusted and finalized it after a couple of critiques to adjust spacing,
alignment, and color.

Letterhead

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: InDesign, Illustrator
Description: A matching letterhead to my personal business card. I am trying to market
myself as a clean, organized, and capable individual to potential employers.
Objectives: Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign, create a new logo to fit a
company or personal image, do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs, and
dont use photos or live trace. Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business
card and matching letterhead. Apply typography rules, keeping small copy and keep

Process: After researching different ideals for inspiration, I sketched a few ideas for
my personal logo then designed it in Adobe Illustrator and used it in my design for my
business card. After I had designed my business card, I designed a matching letter head
in Illustrator as well. I adjusted and finalized both after a couple of critiques to adjust
spacing, alignment, and color.

Flier

Date: May 10, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: InDesign
Description: Black and White Flier to promote a graduate leadership conference to
graduating seniors to learn effective leadership skills. My message is to have graduating
seniors come gain leadership skills by attending Vouant Communications threeday seminar. The audience is graduating seniors seeking an edge in business and the
workplace.
Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography, incorporate basic
InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout, retrieve image and logo from links, and
create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign
intact.
Process: After sketching out four different possible designs I could go with, I narrowed
it down to just one Id want to pursue for this project. Then, after I had designed my
actual flier on the program InDesign, I decided to stray from my original sketch just a
bit to add more visual interest. I always kept my original idea in mind though in order
to not distract from the message and purpose at hand. I simply made the image larger
and less opaque to act as a sort of background. After making sure all the elements were
aligned with something else and that the design maintained the hierarchy and visual
flow I wanted, I gathered various critiques and opinions to help me realize and fix any
problems my design had. So, in the process of revising my design, I lightened the image
and placed a gray semi-transparent text box behind the body copy so that the text would
not be overpowered or hard to read. Once I was happy with my design after revision, I
then finalized it and printed it.

Logos

Date: June 7, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: Illustrator
Description: Logo for the company All Day Plumbing & Construction The message is that
this company does both tasteful plumbing and construction work. It is directed toward
the general public that may be in need of the companys services.
Objectives: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal
image that will appeal to the audience. Market research: gather opinions from at least ten
people about which logo appeals most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fabricated
flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a
guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)
Refine one logo with variations for color
Process: After sketching a few ideas, I designed three possible very different logos in
Adobe Illustrator. After doing that I asked my classmates, peers, and family which they
liked best out of the three and they all seemed to like my third design much more than
the others. Although this was my least favorite design because I spent the least amount
of time on it, I took what they said as to why they liked it and the critiques I gathered on
it and began to revise it accordingly. Previously the text was not inside the handle of the
wrench and the wrench was smaller, but I and my critics liked my idea of having the text
inside the wrench shape. My critics and I also like the color scheme from one of my other
logo options I had designed due to its better contrast and visual appeal. So, I applied it
to this logo design. I then finalized my design and adjusted it for a grey scale and color
background version.

Web Page

Date: June 27, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: Notepad++, Illustrator, InDesign
Description: A webpage was created to showcase this logo I created. It includes, but is
not limited to, the process of creating the logo, rationale for color choices, appeal to
target audience, and design skills. The message I am trying to get across is that I am
well-learned in design, design principles, and programs used for such to my audience,
potential employers.
Objectives: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side
is 300 500 pixels, and write content to describe the process of creating your logo and
how it appeals to a target audience. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a
working knowledge of CSS. Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color
picker.
Process: I used Notepad++, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator for this project. The
majority of my project was done on Notepad++ when editing the css and html for my
website. I only used the adobe programs to adjust and format the images on the webpage,
both the logo and background. Some of the more specific principles I kept in mind
throughout designing this webpage were repetition and contrast. After editing some
things in my HTML document, I linked a pre-made CSS document to it and began the
editing process in order to fit my design and showcase my logo. Some specific things I
did, was choose colors that either matched or were similar to the ones used in my logo
with the help of Photoshop in getting their hex codes or rgba numbers if I wanted to
adjust their transparency. I also adjusted many of the margins and padding to get things
spaced out nicely, I made sure to keep the principle of proximity in mind as well.

Photodesign

Date: May 24, 2015

Course: Communications 130 Section 04 Visual Media
Instructor: Jason Reeder
Programs used: Photoshop
Description: Use photography and editing skills to incorporate into a full-bleed design
that follows a color scheme. Message: Ad to showcase shoes sold by the company/brand
Guess. Audience: General public.
Objectives: Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image,
then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on
separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing). Size and crop the image, then place
on an 8.511 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in
Photoshop.
Process: After taking multiple pictures and narrowing it down to two that were better
than the others, I edited both photos on Photoshop. Then I designed two different
designs, one for each photo. After my critique, I decided to use one design over the other
and then just adjusted the placement of some design elements and added a drop shadow
to the text. After printing, I trimmed the white border off in order to make it a full-bleed
design.
