Grade Eight Poetry Unit

C level to a maximum of 70 points

C-1 is mandatory.
C-1) Complete the poetry worksheet package. All the worksheets must be
completely done.

C-2) Make up figurative language cards with an example of figurative
language (from a published poem) on one side, and the definition of the
term on the other side.

C-3) Make up definition cards with a poetic form on one side and the
definition on the other side

B-1) Create figurative language cards with an example of figurative language
(from a published poem) on one side, and an image ( drawn, downloaded,
cut-out) of its literal meaning on the other side,

B-2) Create a black and white poster ( negative and positive) of two poems
on the same subject and a single symbolic image that ties the two together.
Each poem quoted must have the title, name of the poet, and bibliographical
information (from book or internet source)

B-3) Create an illustrated version of a published poem ( use images that will
enhance understanding of the poemcomic strip, collage, photograph(s), etc.)

B-4)Match poetry and music. Find a poem that you think is thematically
the same as a piece of published music. Point out the similarities in one
to two paragraphs. Each poem and song quoted must have the title,
name of the poet/singer/band, and bibliographical information
(from book, album, or internet source)

A level---add to C and B levels for a total of 100 points

A-1) Create a poetry booklet with a minimum of ten poems You cannot
use any poems that we discuss in class. You must have one of each of the
following types of poem : Haiku, Villanelle, Sonnet, Ballad, Limerick,
and Lyric. You should have an example of each type of poem,
with an illustration or picture to go with the poem , and an explanation
of the poem ( one paragraph in length) in your own words. The poem, (each
poem quoted must have the title, name of the poet, and bibliographical
information (from book or internet source) neatly written or typed
out with a graphic ( drawn, cut out, or downloaded) should be on one
page, followed by the interpretation on another page. Five of the included
poems should be original (meaning written by you!), with the rest of the poems
written by published authors. All poems must be school appropriate or
your entire project may be zeroed.

A-2) Write a report on the poetry of one specific poet of your


choice. Use selected examples of her/his work to show themes that
the poet explores. Your report should be at least one page in length,
and use at least two sources. Each poem quoted must have the title,
name of the poet, and bibliographical information (from book or
internet source)

of which five of the poems should be published. You cannot use any poems

that we discuss in class. You must have at least four different types of poetry.
