Valley Senior Center, the staff works very hard to bring programs,
activities and hot nutritional meals to the seniors in the six towns
we serve. As a non-profit, we have to do extensive fundraising to
help cover the overhead costs of the center as well as raise money
for the Meals on Wheels program that makes a big difference for
the seniors who remain in their own home and community. This
cannot be done without the support of people like you and we are
so fortunate and blessed in this rural area to have community support. It could not be done without you and without our dedicated
volunteers.
On July 8, I (Rita Copeland) as Director, hosted a luncheon of
area clergy in the six towns we serve. The purpose of the meeting
is to collaborate with the clergy and ask their help in our reaching
out to the disabled, veterans and seniors in their areas. We want
them to know about the center, the programs we offer, and partner
with them to reach the people in their towns who could use our
services to keep them well and at home.
On July 20, the SASH program will be at TVSC. There will be
blood pressure checks by Boo, registered nurse and Kenneth
always has an interesting topic (health related) to share with the
seniors. Boo and Kenneth will also be available to answer questions you may have and help steer you in the right direction to
receive assistance you may need. SASH stands for Seniors
Assisted Services at Home and they are very knowledgeable in
that field. They will be at the center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, since Gov. Douglas vetoed a budget and was overridden by the legislature just five years ago, the legislature has
increased the total spending of state dollars by 34 percent. Perpupil spending has risen 24 percent, and state dollars spent on
human services have increased a whopping 48 percent.
Had state spending grown at the rate of inflation over that same
period, the budget for 2016 would have been about $250 million
less.
When an infusion of one-time federal funds is used to expand
existing state programs, it generates a future day of reckoning. As
the federal funds disappear, there is a reduction in total spending
even if state spending increases. It gives the appearance of a cut
even though the state may be spending far more than ever before.
Before closing, Pelham noted that taxing the rich is not a
viable answer. Vermont, he said, has been a high tax state for some
time. Vermonts percentage of high income earners is already
considerably lower than most nearby states, and very few of its
high-income filers are in that category for more than a year or two.
Most are at or near the upper ends of working age, selling their
businesses or other assets in preparation for retirement, he said.
Board Chair Leslie Sanborn expressed her thanks to Pelham for
taking the time to discuss the budget and to Chamber Vice Chair
Lindel James who arranged the meeting.

need to buy more out-of-state fracked gas and nuclear power. This
baseload power that Vermont Yankee opponents objected to seems
to be acceptable coming from an out of state nuclear plant.
As backers and opponents alike of Vermonts proliferating
wind, solar, and biomass projects are learning, its hard to build
new power manufacturing in Vermont. DPS, our energy planning
experts, must re-examine the energy plan and show Vermonters
what is possible and what is not. For example: at a June 30 stakeholder engagement session sponsored by DPS, instate hydro was
listed as an option to fill future renewable energy gaps. Yet prevailing wisdom is that instate hydro is virtually maxed and there is
very little additional capacity. We shouldnt have something on a
wish list if the capacity doesnt exist.
And we hope DPS will describe exactly how many wind projects and solar arrays will be necessary to meet the 90% goal.
Vermonters should know this ahead of time rather than going
through the sprouting up here and there process we currently
see. Vermonters need a clear vision of how solar panels and wind
towers will change the Vermont landscape if we try to reach the
90% renewable goal. And with that knowledge, they should have
a right to weigh in on site approval.
We can only hope that energy planners in Vermont, and across
New England, will work to sustain the operation of the regions
remaining operational low-carbon nuclear power plants. This will
be necessary for clean baseload power. And if Vermont is headed
to reliance on fracked gas from Canada and Pennsylvania for
baseload power, we need to admit that our energy planning process failed to understand how to choose fuel sources to reduce
carbon emissions.
Vermonts current energy policy should undergo close scrutiny to determine if the end game matches the desire for a
cleaner, more economical energy portfolio. Right now, it sure
doesnt look that way.
Brad Ferland of St. Albans is president of the Vermont Energy
Partnership.
LIQUIDATION SALE
By Brad Ferland
I read with interest a recent media report about Vermont being
on the verge of a big increase in the use of fracked gas from
Canada, and how our utilities plan to buy even more power from
Seabrook, the nearest nuclear power plant to Vermont now that
Vermont Yankee has closed.
Several years ago Vermont had one of the most enviable electricity supply portfolios in the country. We received a third of our
power from instate Vermont Yankee and almost a third of our
power from Hydro Quebec. Both sources were low carbon, low
cost and baseload power, all essential components of a sound
energy mix. As we all know, political forces in Vermont rallied to
close Vermont Yankee. Ultimately market factors led to Vermont
losing Vermont Yankee power.
In their push to close Vermont Yankee, plant opponents not only
wanted it shut down but also decommissioned as quickly as possible. Now, we are reading reports from State officials that they
want more say in the decommissioning process and are challenging the NRCs authority on safety-related matters. This doesnt
look like an effort to decommission the plant in a timely manner;
it looks like using decommissioning resources for potential state
revenue and ultimately delaying decommissioning.
What does this all mean for Vermont? Even though Vermont
Yankee is no longer in the mix, Vermont still needs baseload
power. Vermonters must take a closer look at the states
Comprehensive Energy Plan (CEP) and what the future holds.
While the Department of Public Service updates the plan, we have
the opportunity to get a reality check on how it will play out in the
future. Here is the fundamental question: does the Vermont energy
plan put us in a better position with cost and carbon or are we losing ground? In a prudent energy mix, is it even possible to go from
the current 17% total renewable energy to 90%? There are many
reasons to realistically think not. This calls for wind and solar
growth in major scale fashion for Vermont. And the intermittent
component of wind and solar requires baseload support: thus the

from SUNY New Paltz, with honors, last year. She won a Fulbright
Scholarship to teach English in Malaysia. How many large school
graduates do as well? Shes not unique. Eighty percent of C.H.S.
2015 graduates will attend college.
Legislators say the issue is money, but are silent about the
TRILLION DOLLARS spent on wars this past decade. Money
spent educating children is more important than buying bullets.
YES, a good education is expensive. Its worth more than we
spend. Those who complain about the cost of education dont
value education. Ignore them. SHAME on legislators who voted
for this vile law and the Governor who signed it. We can and
should vote them OUT of office and repeal Act 46.
Bonnie Stevens Dannenberg
Cabot, VT
ATTENTION
Editor,
I grew up in Cabot in the 1950s/60s. I came home in 1999. It
was like stepping back in time 50 years, but not in a bad way.
Since 1999, a dozen village houses vanished. In 2010, our village
government, which worked since 1866, dissolved.
Now the Vermont legislature threatens our beloved school.
Legislators wrongly believe small is bad and large is good. They
say small costs too much. But, state mandates inflate school budgets, not local residents.
Act 46 breaks my heart. Its a vile, evil, cruel law. Only a minority want it, as proven with Cabots school vote two years ago. We
voted overwhelmingly to KEEP our school. This law is an empty
promise. Its a lie that combining school districts will cost less, it
wont. When people see that truth, it will be too late. Our school
will be gone, like our ghost houses and village government.
Local schools are the heart and soul of any community, whether
you have children in them or not. Remove the school--kill the
town. Our school board members work hard to make sure Cabot is
an excellent school. Were proud of it and of them. I dont WANT
our school board members to be a minority from Cabot with a
majority from larger towns were forced to merge with. It will
guarantee we have NO local control. Our school board members
do an outstanding job. They care about Cabot School. Local residents can better meet student needs than a one-size-fits-all bureaucratic mandate from Montpelier.
Judge schools not by size, but by what graduates accomplish.

Reisss Pieces
By Judy Reiss
He bosses both the dogs around, and of course, now that our
beloved James has passed, he makes every attempt to keep poor
Yul in line. This past winter I did think that old Victor was looking
quite thin and after a trip to the vet, found he has a condition that
has to be controlled by taking a teeny, tiny pill twice a day. Giving
an ordinary cat a pill is hard enough, but trying to give him a pill
just isnt possible. So we try and put it into his breakfast and his
dinner. Needless to say, he wouldnt even consider eating plain old
cat food so we put his pill in tuna fish. And this worked pretty well
for a few weeks. Now, twice a day, it is a game between us. I hide
the pill in his tuna and he tries to find it and spit it out. Right now
it is about a 50-50 score.
He, like the rest of the family, including my hibiscus tree, goes
to the Cape for the summer. He loves it there because the Cape is
one giant litter box! And although he is very neat and very private,
he does like to try and shock visitors. This time when I tell you that
this darling boy cat is better behaved than any of my children or
even my grandsons ever were, believe it. He is very much like a
3-year-old toddler.
Once last thing that I should share with you is bedtime. At 9
p.m., it seems that all of my furry children can tell time. Regardless of whether I am reading or watching TV, they know it is time
to go upstairs. If I ignore them they bark, whine, scratch or pick
me until I cant stand it any more and up we go. Once there, I sit in
my chair and usually take off my shoes and turn on the TV, just for
noise. And then both dogs and Victor get a piece of chicken jerky!
The dogs, of course, get 3 pieces but Victor appears to be content
with just one. And after I shower, we all get into bed while I read.
Victor comes and goes but once Malcolm arrives he settles down
for the night nested into Malcs arms. And that is how we spend the
night. Lily pins herself to my back. Rufus wherever he can sleep
without getting too hot, Yul at my feet and Victor the Tree in his
position of importance in Malcolms arm! And there he stays until
he decides that it is time for the Reiss family to get up and begin
another day. And we welcome the day together the same way we
said good-night!

The Millstone Trails network is
known for its miles on end of mountain
biking adventure. The trails are also
open to hikers, runners, cross-country
skiers, and snowshoers.
But in 2013, the Barre Town Forest
welcomed an entirely different type of
recreationist disc golfers.
Now in its third year, the Quarries
Disc Golf Course in the Barre Town
Forest is maturing into one of the mustplay courses in central Vermont, complete with an experience unlike no other
in the state.
The disc golf course was designed
around the existing walking and mountain biking trails, meandering through
the forest and old quarries. The signature hole at No. 5 includes an uphill
throw over a quarry filled with water
that can play with the mind.
When my buddy Al (Rosa) went in
to design it, he took into consideration
all their trails and all their existing vista
points, co-founder David Rouleau said.
He laid it out pretty good and we

which provided granite
for the
Statehouse, the Old Number Six Quarry
and a spur trail to Rock Tower
Lookout.
The course can be enjoyed playing
as all 18 holes, where holes 8 through
13 take you deeper into the forest and
offer longer shots, or you can shorten
play by jumping from 6 to 14, bringing
you back to the parking lot.
Rouleau said of the 355 acres of town
forest, the course spreads across approximately 35 acres.
The course is free to play on an
everyday basis, but is closed occasionally for special events like tournaments.
On Saturday, the course hosted The
Quarries Throwdown, the sixth event of
the Green Mountain Points Series.
However, The Quarries also hosts
special free events throughout the year,
including glow rounds. Disc golfers
were able to enjoy the course at night
recently during RockFire at the Quarries
Third Annual Glow Round.
Parking for the course is located at 44
Brook St. in Websterville. The course is
open from dawn to dusk.

Tom Brennan) to work on the skills needed to enhance your game to the next level.
Brian was rst team all state his senior year playing for Notre Dame High School in
PA. Brian also played college ball for Indiana University of PA. Brian began his coaching career at The Potomac School in VA and helped guide them to a state championship
in 2008. He then began helping at Gwynn Park High School where he helped guide
them to the state nals in 2009-10, in 2010-11 went to the state nal four, and in 201112 won both the conference and county championships and nished ranked #1 in the
South Region. Brian also works for a company called Hoops Education where he does
individual workouts, camps, and team development throughout the year. Other camp
counselors include Anthony Spencer, Twineld Union Athletic Director, and Kris Bador, the UAAU Coach. Other special guest appearances could happen during the camp
weeks as well.
Former University of Vermont superstar Taylor Coppenrath may also be making an
appearance during cam sessions. Taylor helped lead UVM to an NCAA 3-peat and was
the second all-time leading scorer at UVM. Taylor has played professionally in Greece,
Italy and Spain.
Kids get plenty of fun with their fundamentals, and every camper receives a Tshirt or basketball, a completed evaluation at the conclusion of the camps. This
evaluation will allow each kid to focus on the areas of the game that will help you
develop into an all-around player...All campers need to bring a change of shoes.
There will be a pizza party for all kids at 12:00 the last day of camp each week.
A food concession stand will be set up with snacks, drinks, pizza throughout both
weeks of camp.

Q: My dad was quite a fisherman. In fact, most of our family vacations centered around
fishing sites and campgrounds.
I have several tackle boxes
full of lures, and I understand
they have value. How can I
find out if any that I have are
worth keeping?
