Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral inhibition of the NTS with

muscimol increases the mean arterial pressure
(MAP) and lumbar sympathetic nerve activity. These
responses are abolished by exercise training. The
commNTS contains essential neurons for the
maintenance of hypertension in SHR. However, is
still unclear whether physical exercise (PE) can
modify the hemodynamic control elicited by the
commNTS in SHR. In the present study, we
evaluated the effect of PE on the hemodynamic
adjustments induced by inhibition of the commNTS
in SHR. MATERIAL AND METHODS: SHR (N=6/group)
with 14 weeks of age (~300 g) at the beginning of

the experiments were used. The SHR were

maintained sedentary or submitted to swimming in
daily sections of 1 h, 5 days/wk for 6 wks in
individuals tanks with water at 30-34o C. The
sedentary SHR (S-SHR) or submitted to physical
exercise (PE-SHR) were anesthetized with 2%
halothane in 100% O2 and the femoral vein and
artery were cannulated for infusion of -chloralose
60 mg/kg (i.v.) and mean arterial pressure (MAP)
and heart rate (HR) recordings, respectively.
Miniaturized Doppler flow probes were placed around
the lower abdominal aorta and superior mesenteric
arteries for indirect measurement of regional blood
flow (F). The vascular conductance was calculated
by F/MAP. The SHR were placed in a stereotaxic
apparatus and submitted to the partial craniotomy of
the occipital bone for the injection of GABA 50 mM
(60 nL) into the commNTS. The injection of GABA
into the commNTS produced a greater increase in
the aortic conductance in the PE-SHR (548%)
compared to S-SHR (245%) and decreased the
MAP and HR similarly in SHR submitted to the PE
(-256 mmHg and 12 bpm) and in S-SHR (-305
mmHg and 62 bpm). No significant change was
observed in the mesenteric conductance either in
the SHR submitted to the PE (-73%) or in the SSHR (-23%). CONCLUSION: The inhibition of the
commNTS elicits similar reductions in MAP in S-SHR
or submitted to PE, but causes a larger aortic
vasodilation in SHR submitted to PE, suggesting that
the exercise modifies the hemodynamic control to
the hindlimb elicited by the commNTS neurons.
