Methodology
Retrospective review over 10 years
data (2002-2012) A.D. of
milk
production and breeding records of
Murrah buffaloes maintained at
Livestock
Development
Farm
Pokhara.
Sample size of 350 murrah
buffaloes sired by 15 bulls were
utilized for the study.
Variation in milk production and
decrease in breeding efficiency were
analyzed and correlated with the
Temperature-Humidity Index (THI)
using SPSS ver. 16.
Seasonal effect on lactation length
of murrah buffaloes was estimated
using Least square procedure of
Harvey (1990).
Statistically

Abstract
Discussion
Results of this study revealed that season
of calving had significant effect
on
lactation length (P<0.05) of murrah
buffaloes. This results confirm the findings
of Singh et al. (1989) in Murrah buffaloes
in India.
Seasonal variation is mainly due to
differences in quality and availability of
fodder and seasonal stress due to extreme
temperature and humidity that prevails in
different seasons.
Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) has
negative effect on reproductive function of
murrah buffaloes.
The depression in buffalo fertility is
mainly due to frequent incidence of silent
heat and poor expression of estrus more
frequent at high temperature and
humidity. .
The calculated correlation between milk
yield and THI indicated that the milk yield
was negatively correlated with THI (r = 0.80, P < 0.01).
The regression equation between milk
yield and THI is Milk Yield (Kg/buffalo/day)
= 11.72 - 0.082 THI (R2=0.654).
A higher R2 value of 0.654 predicts that a
larger part of the variation in the milk yield
of buffaloes is due to heat stress
