For the last three months, Tim and his wife,

praying for the progress of their 3-month-old
son, Riley.
Those months have been an emotional roller
coaster. They’ve waited at the hospital through
two heart surgeries. They’ve watched doctors
and nurses perform chest compressions on
Riley. They’ve stared at their son in his warm-
ing bed, tubes coming out of his nose, mouth
and veins.
They’ve also celebrated the small things.
They love to see him smile, even if it’s just
because of gas. They couldn’t wait to change
his diaper. And they waited for what seemed
an eternity – two weeks – to finally hold their
baby boy for the second time.
While Riley’s heart may be small in stature,
he has shown a fighting spirit that lifts the
faith of his parents and doctors. And on this
Valentine’s Day, Tim and Kelly hope, simply,
for another good day.

A nurseryman recommended
that only iron be applied to
the lawn this year – that the
disease wouldn’t survive in
a soil that is mostly iron. Is
that true?
Research done by plant pa-
thologist Dr. Phil Colbaugh of
Texas A&M has shown that a
1-inch layer of Canadian peat
moss will suppress the TARR
fungus for one to three years.
In my own experiences in my
lawn, this has been the most
effective treatment by far. I
have not seen any research-
backed suggestion of iron
in this capacity. For those
who are not familiar, TARR
causes St. Augustine to thin
and die away gradually. The
symptoms are somewhat
like those of grub worms: the
grass dies and pulls loose
easily from the soil, runners
and all. However, grubs are
not present. The Plant Dis-
ease Diagnostic Laboratory
sprays things. I have other
shrubs, but only these are af-
fected. What could cause it?
The nurseryman is correct.
This almost assuredly has to
be some extraneous chemi-
cal injury. My first inclina-
tion, from looking at your
photos, was that it could be
herbicide damage. This is ab-
solutely typical of weedkiller
injury, particularly a type
that might be included in a
weed-and-feed product. The
fact that two unrelated spe-
cies (both of them essentially
pest-proof) are affected rules
out the chance of insects or
diseases. Keep your plants
moist the balance of the win-
ter and early spring. New
growth in the spring will
probably look a lot better.
Dear Neil: We had the big
round circles in our lawn last
fall, but it has faded with the
winter. What can we use this

ing strawberries in Texas in
general is the hot summer
weather. Strawberries do fa-

grees, and that rules them
out as mainstay crops for
most of Texas. Strawberry
jars merely add to that chal-

to sun and heat. Most people
prefer to use one of the ever-

an ongoing harvest of a few
fruit a week. However, you’ll
need to move the pot into a
partially shaded location
where it can have shelter
from the afternoon sun in
the summer. Use only the
very best potting soil, and
keep it moist at all times.
Consider, too, the possibility
of growing trailing herbs or
small succulent plants in the

The Wise County Historical Society is currently involved in
an effort to raise funds. An 8.5” x 11” journal will be printed
concerning the history of the Wise County Heritage
Museum. This journal is financed by donations and
advertising space from our local businesses and residents
here in Wise County and the surrounding area.
The museum houses artifacts from the prehistoric age,
pioneer era, etc. We have much work to do before the
exhibits are as we want them since the walls and windows
are in need of much attention. The museum has the
archive where much research material is found. THE LOST
BATTALION ROOM on the second floor is dedicated to
those men who were held prisoners of the Japanese three
and one-half years during WWII.

Despite two surgeries, 3-month-old Riley Hardee shows uncommon strength

“Sometimes we talk like doctors,” Tim
Hardee said in mid-sentence, pausing to smile
before he continued telling Riley’s story.
Less than a day after Riley’s Nov. 1 birth,
he was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart
syndrome, a condition in which the left side of
the heart is underdeveloped.
For the last three months, Tim and his wife,
Kelly, have spent much of their time at Cook
Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth, hoping and
