Nebosh D guide

My rough notes typed up hopefully they make some sense.

This is following the NEBOSH Unit D Guide downloadable from their website.
1. Assignment Brief
Its for management. To examine a work area and review current systems in place for
managing risks and H&S recommendations and identify shortcomings in system.
Identify hazards/risks and shortcomings and prioritise remedial action and to convince
management to take action.
2. Structure of the Report
Aims/Objectives/Methodology
A detailed review of the health and safety performance of your chose company and to
produce a justified action plan that will improve the health and safety of the company.
The objectives are the actions that will ensure that the aim of the report is met. To ensure
that the aims are manageable if you were to impose the recommendations across a multi
site operation.
Methodology is where you went, what you saw and how you collated the information.
Description of the Organisation
What the business does
Where they are based
What site single site or multi site
What happens?
What processes
How many people
Shiftwork?
Unionised H&S Reps?
Any vehicles
Legal Environment
Dont give a description of HASWA, MHWR, WHSR etc instead describe how various
pieces of legislation impacts on your company in terms of Criminal, Statute, Civil,
Breach of Statutory Duty things like COSHH, PUWER - what does your company do to
comply?

Review of H&S Management Systems

Description of H&S Management System and Gap Analysis
Give a brief (paragraph) description of the management system in your organisation and
how it applies there. What is in place and what are the shortfalls in the system i.e.
compare either HSG65 or 18001 to what you have in your company and how you either
comply/not comply with it and how you propose to comply.
It is probably an idea to do the summary of the Gap Analysis in a table format.
Hazard Identification Physical and Welfare
Risk Assessment Physical and Welfare
These are the hazards from B&C and identify a range of hazards and do a risk assessment
for the most hazardous on each B&C. Do about ten from each element and do a risk
assessment for the most hazardous element one for B and one C.
Again it may be easier to do the initial hazards in a table format.
Do an analysis of how you have prioritised your hazards with a summary of how you
calculate the final risk rating.
Again it would be easier to summarise this in a table and then do a risk assessment on
element from Unit B and one element from Unit C.
Conclusions
Summary of things looked at in a general prcis refer back to aims and objectives
summary. Dont put any new information into this area.
Recommendations
Put them in order of prioritisation and include elements from the gap analysis and risk
assessment findings with importance, reason, cost and benefit to the organisation of doing
this.
Action Plan Management System and Hazards and Risks
These should be SMART based on the results of the gap analysis and hazard
identification process and should include responsibilities, cost, success criteria and
review date.
Then do an Executive Summary giving a brief overview of what you have found and how
you propose they should be carried out.
