Painjw = a + r j + m2 w2 + m3 w3 +
0jw
Here, Painjw is the pain score, which is
assumed to have an approximately normal
distribution, for a pa- tient receiving
treatment j (j = 1 for C, j = 2 for MEBO)
13
in successive weeks w. Each of the n patients provides repeated observations with
which to estimate this model.
In the above model, pain levels in week 1
corre- spond to w2 = w3 = 0, those in week
2 to w2 = 1, w3
= 0, and in week 3 to w2 = 0, w3 = 1. The
parameters 0jw estimate the interactions
between treatment and week (denoted M
W in Tables 3 and 4). That is, they
provide a check as to whether or not the
magni- tude of the difference (if any)
between MEBO and C remains the same
from week to week. Although there are six
possible combinations of treatment and week,
when j = 1, 011 = 012 = 013 = 0, as does
021 = 0. Hence, the parameters to estimate
with the data are a, r, m2, m3, 022, and 023.
However, the main focus is to test the
hypothesis corresponding to the effect of
treatment, that is, to test that r = 0. In
the situation, where the pain reported does
not depend on either which treatment is
given nor the week in which it is assessed,
then r, m2, m3, 022, and 023. will be all
zero. In this case, a represents the mean
pain level for all
