Thaarekh: Thaarekh is the historical literature of Maldives. It is written by


Hassan Thaajuddin in Arabic language. It is a documentary evidence for
the history of Maldives. It covers 670 years of the history of Maldives. It
deals with political events as well as natural happenings.
Reasons for the rapid spread of Islam:Whenever people accepted
Islam, they became closely linked to one another as one international
community. The Muslims respected the local culture. Islam emphasizes
learning. The Arabs had developed strong ships and invented instruments
for navigation. The Islamic army was strong and fearless.
Relationship between the Dutch and Maldives: When the Dutch
gained control of the region, Maldives stopped sending tributes to the
Portuguese and to Ali Raja of Kannanur. From 1645, regular emissaries
were sent from Maldives to the Dutch in Colombo. Maldives sent sweets,
coir ropes, ambergris, mats, cowries and sea coconut to the Dutch. The
Dutch sent pepper , cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, mace, and arecanuts to
Maldives. The Dutch traded the Maldivian cowries in Africa
Role of Muhammad Thakurufaanu in the history of Maldives:
Muhammad Thakurufaanu is a national hero of Maldives. He regained the
independence of Maldives from the Portuguese and revived the faith of
Islam in Maldives. He reorganized the army. He introduced coins to
Maldives the National Day is celebrated in his memory.
Role of Dhon Bandarain in the history of Maldives: Dhon Bandarain
was the popular name of Hassan Manikufaanu. He was the leader of the
Maldivian patriots against the Malabars. He retained the independence of
Maldives from the Malabars the French through a cleaver combination of
war and diplomacy. The Thaareekh praises him for his fair rule. Huravee
Day is marked in his memory.
Protectorate Treaty: It was signed in 1887 between Maldives and
Britain. The British signed this treaty to regulate the Maldivian affairs.
Maldives gave of her right to sign treaty of other countries Britain agreed
to protect Maldives from foreign enemies. Britain promised not to interfere
in the internal matters of Maldives
Tourism in Maldives: Tourism is a tertiary economic activity which
provides services to the visitors. It was started in 1972 by Ibrahim Nasir.
The first tourist resort was Kurumba Village. Tourism has become the most
important economic activity in Maldives .It provides foreign currency to
Maldives. It also provides jobs to people.

Fishing in Maldives; Past and the present: In the past fishing was
carried out in Riyaadhoani. Fish was mainly exported to Sri Lanka. Today
fishing is carried out in engine dhoanis. Today fish is exported in many
forms to Sri Lanka and Japan. In the past hand made tools were used to
build fishing boats. Today modern tools are used.
Absolute Monarchy and Constitutional Monarchy: In absolute
monarchy the king or the queen has absolute powers to rule the country.
But in a constitutional monarchy the king or the queen rules according to
constitution of the country. In absolute monarchy the monarch makes the
laws. There is no constitution and parliament. In constitutional monarchy
the parliament makes the laws.
