RATIONALE

Paper is the number one waste that an ordinary person discards right away. A
clean sheet of paper is being used in schools and in the workplace. However, for a
close-minded person who cares less for the environment, both sides arent fully utilized.
Others, after filling all the spaces, immediately crumple papers or shred them into
pieces. Because paper has been an integral part of the everyday life of people
worldwide, the high demand for it still cannot be avoided. Even if catalysts have
campaigned about having a paper-less world, the dependence that people have grown
accustomed to cannot be completely released yet. This is part of the reason why
approximately 35% of the trash in the dump is composed of paper. In fact, back in 2009,
about 20, 000 square kilometres of trees in rainforests is being cut down in order to
keep up with the demand of its supply.
Our groups aim is to address the increase in waste brought by junk paper. In
Cebu alone, though the Inayawan landfill was supposedly closed down, trucks filled with
garbage still dump waste in the landfill because all of these cannot be accommodated in
Nagas input of specific trash as renewable energy. Thus, as a means of solid waste
management, our group has proposed the recycling of paper waste. This is through the
usage of junk paper as input or raw material in the production of papercrete bricks. A
single papercrete brick is composed of about 90% used paper and 10% Portal cement.
It has been approximated that five gallons of the mix may already produce twenty-five to
thirty bricks. Our group chose to venture in this study because no matter how used up
and shredded the papers are, these may still be used as an input for the papercrete
bricks.
These papercrete bricks are not for the purpose of constructing neither sheds nor
houses. Our team has formulated this proposal for the usage of rural areas. Papercrete
bricks, compared to the regular concrete bricks, are cheaper materials in making
footpaths. Our group is planning to sell this product to the public schools and
households from a barangay of a municipality. For the group alone, this undertaking in
choosing them as the target market is not only for the profit that will be earned, but it is
also for the assistance of students and faculty members in public schools. Due to
frequent typhoons, there are public schools that get surrounded by a muddy
environment. Some schools unfortunately suspend classes due to this problem.
Therefore, our team wishes to make the offer of selling these alternative bricks to the
said target market.
