This newsletter will be published quarterly to inform you of all the sporting and recreational opportunities

available in Canterbury for disabled people.

Many opportunities are provided through Sport Canterbury (Sport Opportunity Programme), ParaFed Can-
terbury, Special Olympics and the Christchurch City Council. “You Can Do It In Canterbury” will keep you
informed of all the opportunities available to you.

In this edition we have featured The Star City to Surf and the 2010 Independence Games. If you have an
event, initiative or programme you would like to promote in the next edition please contact Justin at Sport
Canterbury. Information for the next edition needs to be submitted by the 9th of April.

The Star City to Surf


This year the Halberg Trust and Sport Canterbury in conjunction with Westpac
will assist disabled Cantabrians to participate in The Star City 2 Surf. Westpac
will provide 100 disabled people and their support person a free registration for
the 6km Heart Foundation walk / run (valued at $12 per person), a Westpac t-shirt and a BBQ at the end.

The 6km Heart Foundation walk / run between Porritt Park and QEII is part of The City 2 Surf. Entries through Sport
Canterbury will close on 5th March. Be quick as first in will receive this opportunity.

2010 South Island Independence Games - 10th & 11th April


Over 100 competitors from around the South Island will compete at QEII Stadium,
in Christchurch, on the 10th and 11th of April in the South Island Independence
Games. The games cater for all levels of ability with competitive events including:
athletics, swimming, team triathlon, boccia and adapted games. The games are an
important pathway toward future opportunities in sport.

There is funding available to assist disabled people to access sport and physical activity through the following sources:

Halberg Trust Activity Fund


The Halberg Trust Activity Fund will fund costs over and above what it would cost for an able bodied child to participate in sport
or physical activity. The fund will provide funding for additional or specialised lessons and / or specialised equipment. For more

The Canterbury Community Trust - Making it Happen Awards - Disability


The Making it Happen Awards are available to individuals, to assist in providing solutions or opportunities, in situations were
funding can develop skills, change social attitudes or help extend and develop an individuals potential. For more information visit

Variety - the Children’s Charity


Variety makes funds available to individuals, families and organisations for the benefit of children up to the age of 18. Grants may
be used for a wide range of equipment, tools or aides to help improve the lives of New Zealand children with special needs. Vari-
ety provides assistance to children who are sick or who are challenged by physical, intellectual, psychological, disabilities or are
disadvantaged by socio-economic circumstances or geographic isolation. For more visit www.variety.org.nz (grants / variety

Sport Canterbury / Halberg Trust

ParaFed Canterbury
ParaFed Canterbury provides sport and recreation for people with physical disabilities. Parafed Canterbury offers a variety of
Paralympic sports, an after school Junior Sports Club, weekly training sessions in a variety of Paralympic sports, coach support, ath-
lete squads, specialised gymnasium, a pool of sporting equipment and the use of a hydrotherapy pool.

Special Olympics
Special Olympics provides year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with an
intellectual disability giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and
participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with other Special Olympic athletes and volunteers. Sports provided include:
Basketball, Athletics, Swimming, Bocce, Ten Pin Bowls, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Indoor Bowls, Badminton, Gymnastics, Figure
Skating, Snow Sports, Floor Hockey and Rowing

KiwiAble / Christchurch City Council


The Inclusive Communities Coordinator is based within the Recreation and Sports Unit of the Christchurch City Council. This role
oversees the KiwiAble Programme which assists people with disabilities to access sport, recreation and leisure opportunities in the
community through initiatives such as: the KiwiAble Leisure Card (discounted rates for sports and recreation activities), working
alongside sport and recreation staff to ensure all programmes are as inclusive as possible and providing a recreation network for dis-
ability agencies to get together.
