SHORT PAPER # 1: THE DIFFERENT POPULATION TRENDS

IN THE PHILIPPINES AND OTHER ASEAN COUNTRIES
Around 100, 000, 000 people thats about the total current population of the
Philippines according to the World Bank (2014). For the past years, our countrys
population, or the number of people living in a place, is constantly increasing. In addition
to, this 2015 is the beginning of the ASEAN integration and knowing the corresponding
population trends of the Philippines and the other members of the ASEAN would
probably be significant and useful to our success and economic development. Basically,
population trend is the change of population over time. It can also involve changes in
other things like the birth and death rates and life expectancy rates. Population trends can
also be studied according to different things like by year, by age group and by gender.

From the years 2010 to 2014, all the member countries of the ASEAN have
continuously increasing total population (See Table 1). In the year 2014, the ASEAN
countries took up around 8.63% of the total world population. Out of all the ASEAN
nations, Indonesia is currently the most populated while Brunei is currently the least
populated. As for the annual population growth rate, the growth rates of each country per
year have been consistent (See Table 2). For 2014, the country with the highest growth
rate is Singapore while Thailand has the lowest growth rate.

When the birth rate of a certain country exceeds its death rate, a natural
population increase occurs. Natural population increase is also the rate of population
change not including the migration (Teitelbaum, 2013).

Based on the data from World Bank (2014), the birth rates in all the ASEAN countries for
the five years surpassed the death rates for the same year and all countries exhibited a
natural population increase (See Table 3).
