13

Engage
The purpose for the ENGAGE stage is to
gain student interest and to get students
personally involved in the lesson, while
building on prior understanding.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

14

Explore
The purpose for the EXPLORE stage is to
get students involved in the topic;
providing them with a chance to build on
their own understanding.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

15

Explain
The purpose for the EXPLAIN stage is to
provide students with an opportunity to
communicate what they have learned so
far and figure out what it means.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

16

Extend (Elaborate)
The purpose for the EXTEND or

Key Idea Behind TEMI

Use mysteries or discrepant events to
engage students in the enquiry
process.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

20

What is a mystery?
In science education, a mystery is a
phenomenon or event that provokes the
perception of suspense and wonder in the
learner to initiate an emotionally-laden
want to know-feeling which leads to a
raise in curiosity and which initiates the
posing of questions to be answered by
inquiry and problem-solving activities.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

21

Lesson Approach
How syllabus
is currently
designed

Common
Textbook
Approach

Concrete level using activity to start at more everyday

concrete ideas
Interested students

Abstract level- starting with scientific principles &

mathematical equations
Switched off & unmotivated students

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

TEMI
Approach

22

How else does TEMI engage and

motivate students?

Sense of autonomy for

students

Relevant to students
lives

Active student learning

experience

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

23

Active Learning
TEMI project encourages student-centred active
learning experience through the use of mysteries
for engagement
80% of JC science students surveyed, reported that most or all of class
time is spent listening to [their] teacher.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

25

Density Textbook
Approach
What is density?
Definition: density is mass per unit
volume
Density = mass/volume
Units = g/cm3

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

26

The Density Triangle

Density = mass/volume
Volume = mass/density
Mass = density x volume

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

27

Some Density Problems

Calculate the density of the following
objects:
1. 500 cm3 of water that weighs 500 g
2. A concrete block 30 cm x 20 cm x 10
cm which weighs 10 kg
3. Etc.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

28

Measuring Density
Now you know how to do the
calculations we will measure the
density of some objects:
a) regular objects blocks, cylinders
b) irregular objects e.g. stones, pieces
of wood

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

29

Assessment
Define density.
Give me an equation to calculate
density.
If two blocks were the same size and
one was heavier than the other, which
has the largest density?
Which is heavier a tonne of iron or a
tonne of feathers?
FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

30

An Alternative
Approach

ENGAGE
Why do you
think this
happens?
What do you
observe?

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

31

EXPLORE
Why does one can of Coke float and
other sink?
What do the two cans have in common?
Shape, size, volume
In what way do they differ?
Different label; different mass
What makes an object float?
How could you test your answer?
Can you design an experiment to verify your idea?
FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

32

EXPLAIN
What variables affect whether an object
sinks or floats?
What is the relationship between these
variables?
How are the variables related? If you
increase one, what happens the other?

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

33

EXTEND
What happens when you use 7-Up;
Fanta etc.
Do you think you would have the same
observations when you use bottles
instead of cans?

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

34

EXTEND

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

35

EXTEND
How is it that a small
piece of steel will sink in
water, yet ships can be
made out of steel?

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

36

EVALUATE
Explain density in your own words
If a tourist was stranded on an island,
which materials from the following list
would be the most suitable to make a raft?
Why?
[Plastic, wood, leaves, ice, balloons, plastic
bottles]
FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

37

Begin with concrete experiences and

lead the discussion/lesson to include the
abstract idea.
We are involving students in the idea of
density so that they can understand the
concept.
The end of the lesson is the definition
and the equation and the calculation.

39

What is a mystery?
In science education, a mystery is a
phenomenon or event that provokes the
perception of suspense and wonder in the
learner to initiate an emotionally-laden
want to know-feeling which leads to a
raise in curiosity and which initiates the
posing of questions to be answered by
inquiry and problem-solving activities.

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

40

Good Classroom Mystery

It can be investigated and explained scientifically and
is within the competency of the students involved
Provides affective engagement for the students
Generates curiosity and leads to student questions
Is simple enough to be a discrepant event, and
generate cognitive conflict
The time between mystery and answer is limited (1-2
lessons)

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

41

Bad Classroom Mystery

Provides engagement for the teacher only and the
students are not excited
Generates little curiosity and the teacher has to do
all the work
Is answered by science concepts that are too
difficult for students to grasp

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

42

Keep in Mind.

This doesnt require expensive

chemicals or equipment.
Should be easy to prepare and set up.
Should work quickly and reliably in class

FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

43

Possible Approaches
Mysteries can be:
Teacher Demonstration
Pupil Activity
Video Clip
Real-Life Problem /Observation
Scenario
..
FP7-Science-in-Society-2012-1, Grant Agreement N. 321403

44

Turning the Lesson

Around
The TEMI approach may just involve
turning the lesson around, not inventing a
new experiment.
Instead of using an experiment or
demonstration at the end to
illustrate/confirm the theory, use it at the
start but dont explain it!
Make sure the textbook is closed and out of
sight!!
