ANNOUNCEMENT FOR PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN


MATHEMATICS
Call for Applications for PhD Scholarships Tenable at
Linkping University or at a University in the Consortium
in Sweden in Collaboration with the University of Dar es
Salaam
The University of Dar es Salaam, under the support of
Tanzania-Sweden cooperation education project, is recruiting
three Tanzanian candidates to start PhD studies in
Mathematics at Linkping University or at any other university
in the consortium in Sweden. Interested qualified candidates
are invited to apply. This will be a sandwich programme in the
field of Mathematics from December 2015 to June 2020.
ELIGIBILITY
The applicant must:
Be holding at least a Masters degree in Mathematics;
Be a Tanzanian citizen and a staff member working at the
University of Dar Es Salaam including DUCE and MUCE;
Upon completion of PhD studies, be willing to continue
as an academic staff member at the University of Dar es
Salaam for at least 5 years in order to contribute to
research and teaching in the area of Mathematics;
Be able to stay in Sweden for 6 months per year during
the period of study;

Demonstrate the ability to think creatively and work


independently and also be able to work in a team of
researchers.
Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply.
Interested applicants should submit the following sets of
documents:
An application letter for scholarship for PhD research
appointment;
A current CV (maximum three pages), which includes a
detailed description of previous education on university
level and a description of current research interests;
A copy of passport;
Three recent passport photos.
The following documents are mandatory in the
application:
A certified copy of the applicants Masters degree;
A copy of the applicants Masters thesis/dissertation;
A research concept note of maximum 5 pages;
At least two certified recommendation letters.
The Concept Note must include:
A description of the applicants research interests in
mathematics;
A description of the applicants background in this
area/these areas;
A discussion on the applicants motivation for conducting
PhD studies;
A discussion on what outputs the applicant expects to
realize through the PhD studies.
SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
The scholarship covers:
a. While in Tanzania UDSM staff will continue to receive
salary. Tuition fee will be covered.

b. Sida approved rates will apply while in Sweden - a return


air-fare (economy class) each year, subsistence
allowance, a shared office, photocopy and computer
facilities.
Selection
The short listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel
formed by the office of Postgraduate Studies, team leader of
the sub-programme and team leaders of the sub-programme
from Sweden.
Important dates to note
Submission of letter of application and required documents:
Deadline 31st July 2015 (latest by 4:00 PM). Successful
applicants will be called for interviews scheduled to take place
at the beginning of August 2015.
