Data Collection

In order to ensure the most efficient use of data collected through statistical means, it is
important that all data is as specific and accurate as possible. Douglas Medical Center is looking
to maximize the effect their collected data has on future decisions and conclusions. Working to
categorize information that was collected from surveys as well as providing clarity to the
acquired data was a preliminary necessity. The report will provide additional insight into the data
that was extracted from the surveys and provided information from Douglas Medical Center.
Present an Overview of the Situation at Douglas Medical Center
In this weeks paper, an analysis of why staffs moral is weakening rapidly without
concrete supporting evidence. Douglas Medical Center (DMC) hired a third-party company
BIMS to provide housekeeping and food services to their establishment. Also, BIMS
distinguishes itself from other companies through combining services, such as having
housekeeping, food services, general cleaning, and physical plant maintenance.
Henry Dumas manages the hospitality division and ensures each hospital room is clean
(linens, towels, bathrooms; maintaining the public area). This division has 76 full-time, 28 parttime workers, and ten supervisors allocating 18 hours of service in a 24-hour operation. Equally
important, there is a skeleton crew made of 10 workers plus one supervisor. These members
handle unplanned events at night demanding seven days a week duties.
BIMS typically experiences yearly turnover rate of 55 to 60%. In the last four months
the turnover rate increased to 64%. Even though replacing workers is easy the cost to train
remains constant. There appears to have a malaise occurring with the staff members. The
occurrences are noticed through increased sick calls. In addition, workers are found wasting
time and diminishing the quality of work output.

Data Collection

Debbie Herner, a Human Resource manager, suggested all members complete an

anonymous, voluntary survey. The survey consisted of 10 questions followed by four letter
questions. For example, do you enjoy your assigned shift, is your request for your desired shift
fulfilled, and does your supervisor treat you fairly. To conclude, hypotheses one can come to
with regarding the response rate is the data of the 78 respondents may be low. Nonetheless, the
firm will have better knowledge of what others see in the company and make adjustments.
Describe the instrument used for data collection (Exhibit A)
The instrument used appears to be units of quantitative value. Plotting this information
on a dot plot is possible to determine numerical value and the range of very negatives to very
positive responses. For this next section, I will list qualitative or quantitative below with notes
on how the data is collected and the level of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio).

Data Collection

1. How well do you enjoy working for BIMS?

Using the word how well one works at a company is qualitative and cannot be numerical
calculated.
The level of measurement is nominal because the information represents an observation,
classification and counted.
2. You enjoy your assigned shift.
This question is qualitative as there can only be a yes or no ansewr; however the answer can
be counted.
Therefore, the level of measruement is nominal.
3. Your request for your desired shift was fulfilled.
The wording in this question is qualitative; however the level of measurement is nominal.
4. How many times have you called in sick in the last month?
Quantitative
The level of measurement is interval.
5. You are well trained for your work.
These are qualitative measurements requiring classification and counting to
occur.

6. You are paid fairly for the work you do.

Qualitative
The level of measurement is interval.
7. Your supervisor treats you fairly.
The type of data is qualitative. There is no numerical data to collect.
This makes the level of measurement nominal.
8. Your supervisors boss treats your division fairly.
The type of data is qualitative as this is an observation classified and counted.
The level of measurement is ordinal based on the divisions can be ranked or
ordered.

9. The company is good at communicating.

The type of measurement is qualitative
The level of measurement can be ordinal. There is classifying and order can be

Excel Interpretations
The data collected from surveys that were circulated through the medical center have
several questions where the response number was a number that was not available within the
parameters of the survey or individuals did not answer the question all together. To remedy cases
where the number (6 instead of 5) was recorded as an answer, the initial 6 was merely adjusted to
5. However, any answers represented with a zero were voided completely; indicating a nonresponse to that question.
The last four questions were to categorize the division the person taking the survey
represents, the number of years (in months) the person has worked in their position, their gender,
and finally whether or not they were a supervisor/manager. It was unnecessary to provide any
further clarity concerning the length of time individuals have worked in their position. However,
the following descriptions explain the numerical representations for each answer for the other
three questions:
Division:
1= Food 2= Housekeeping 3= Maintenance
Gender:
1= Female
2= Male
Supervisor/Manager:
1= Yes 2= No
The key above will work to explain answers that have been given, save time, and help in
interpreting and analyzing data.

Questions

After reviewing the data collected our conclusions on the study showed the questions
asked in the survey where well rounded and not personal. By using the data where an employee
did not answer all the questions should have not been used because the information from the data
would not be accurate. 13 employees missed to answer questions which make 16% of the data
not applicable. Either do not use the data or request the survey to be taken again or use the data
from the employees that answered all questions.

Conclusion
When the ink on our surveys is dry, well be able to understand more about our
employees and the general morale of our operation. In addition, morale should be boosted
regardless, and immediately after initiating the survey process. The employees of DMC will
recognize right away that their opinion matters, as were asking it, and theyll have hope that
things will improve since theyre able to voice their mind. In conclusion, a happy workplace is
an easier workplace to run. Not only from dollars and cents, saving money on training, but to get
a deeper connection with the staff is a way to build a stronger and more cohesive unit. I believe
our survey will accomplish this type of continuity, and we just now need to look to the numbers,
and make our employees a little bit happier.
