Robust Design Offers First Class Cutting Capabilities

Hydrostatic Ram
High dynamic stiffness and damping allow heavy cuts
and produce better finishes with greater accuracy.
Headstock is a rigid and thermally-symmetrical
one-piece casting.
Large 250 mm (9.8 in) square ram capable of 75 or
108 kW (100 or 135 hp) cuts and able to reach into
324 mm (12.8 in) minimum bore diameters.
Wear-free system uses preloaded hydrostatic pads. Hydrostatic
design eliminates the need for gibs while maintaining alignments
and accuracies.
Rapid traverse of 20 m/min (787 ipm).

Cross Slide Elevation and Clamping

The hydraulic actuation of the cross slide elevation
and clamping system is simple, safe and accurate.
Slip-stick free motion, without distortion, provides
truer rail positioning.
Infinite number of cross slide positions. Adjustable
cross slide accommodates parts of varying height while
minimizing ram extension.
Absolute linear feedback system provides immediate machine
referencing and eliminates need for limit switches.
Hydraulic cylinder elevation with secure mechanical clamping,
1,000 kN (225,000 lb) per side.
Precision cross slide leveling with standard linear
scale feedback.

Fast, High-Capacity Table Bearing

Table speeds to 500 rpm.
Combination angular and roller thrust bearing design minimizes
part deflection and provides superior load
carrying capacity.
Table runout of 0.005 mm (0.0002 in) TIR radially and
axially produces precise, quality parts.
Plain tables and several chuck configurations available.
Two-speed transmission with 4:1 gear ratio.

Way System
Heavy-duty, size 65, linear roller bearing carriages ride on
hardened and ground guideways. This rigid low-friction
system supports high loads and fast 20 m/min (787 ipm)
traverse speeds. Advantages of roller bearing system
include:
Lower friction results in higher positioning accuracy, better
circular/contouring accuracy and low thermal growth for
consistent accuracy.
Low maintenance and ease of repair. Roller guides require less
oil, reducing coolant contamination. Less susceptible to damage,
roller guides are also easy to replace.

Accessibility and Optimized Cutting Performance

Large Swing Capacity and Ergonomic Access

2000 mm to 3700 mm (79.7 to 145.7 in)
maximum swing.
Wide operator access to parts.
All enclosures allow easy crane loading of parts.
Convenient tool loading and servicing with oolchanger
installed at floor level.
Floor-level installation eliminates need for special
foundations and facilitates machine relocation.

Full X-Axis Travel

Cut from both sides of center and probe diameters with
full X-axis travel left and right of center. Part processing
time is optimized with the capability of cutting from both
sides, since longer time is spent in the cut and fewer tool
changes are required.

Coolant Systems
The self-contained coolant system reduces maintenance,
provides clean coolant to the tool tip and keeps the floor
dry.
Optional performance series coolant system, well-suited for
live spindle operations, offers a 950 liter (250 gal) tank with
40 bar (580 psi) coolant through-the-tool.
The high-performance coolant package optimizes chip
evacuation. The package includes a flush coolant system and
coolant through-the-tool. The tank capacity is 1500 liters
(396 gal). Coolant through-the-tool pressure is 70 bar (1015
psi).

Cost-Effective, Versatile Tooling

Convenient Tool Storage

A floor-mounted, 26-position tool storage disk is standard.
Several disk configurations are available with various combinations of
WedgeLock and modular tooling systems.
The storage disk also handles right angle heads, long boring bars and
proprietary tools.
The floor-mounted system puts the height of the magazine at a
convenient level for tool loading/unloading and maintenance.
For additional tool storage, a chain-type magazine may be added.

WedgeLock System
The Giddings & Lewis WedgeLock System accepts standard
industry retention systems and modular tools reducing tooling
costs.
Large gauge diameter provides optimal taper contact and permits use
of long tools - up to 700 mm (24 in).
Maximum tool diameter is 410 mm (16.4 in).
Maximum tool weight is 115 kg (52.2 lb).
150 kN (33,000 lb) clamping force.
Accepts 60 taper and standard modular tooling systems.
Coolant through-the-tool standard.

Versatile Live Spindle Option

Live spindles increase machining versatility. The optional rotating
spindle is capable of milling, drilling and tapping operations.
Fits in WedgeLock Tooling System.
Superior live spindle bearing stiffness permits higher cutting forces.

Options

Right Angle Head

Improve cycle time and part quality with the live
spindle right-angle head.
Perform milling, drilling and tapping on the side of
the part without having to do a second setup. By
leaving the part fixtured and performing the
operations on the side, positioning remains true and
part quality is maximized.
Coolant through-the-spindle provides lubrication for
improved cutting performance and facilitates chip
evacuation for drilling operations.
The right angle head is stored in the tool magazine
for quick and easy head changes.
Tooling for the right angle head may be stored in the
6 or 12 position tool drawer or the extended 60 or
100 position tool magazine.

6-Position tool drawer

4-Axis Version
The 4-axis model features two heads and two
rams for simultaneous cutting of large diameter
parts including bearings, disks and pulleys.
Rough with one head and finish with the other.
Perform OD and ID cutting at the same time.
Two 26-position toolchangers are included, one for
each head.

C-Axis
Drill and mill turn a variety of features anywhere
on a workpiece with the 360,000 position full
contouring/positioning table. Dual pinions, under
independent servo control, are meshed with the
table ring gear providing a preloaded backlashfree joint.

Options

Pallet Shuttle Adds Productivity

For higher volume jobs, pallet shuttle systems allow operators
to setup additional parts while the machine is cutting.
Equipped with one rotating load/unload station.
Available with one or two park stands.

Expanded Tool Magazine

For operations requiring more than 26 tools, a chain-type magazine
is available increasing capacities to 68, 108 or 208 tools. Any tool
in the extended tool magazine may be used vertically or
horizontally in a right angle head.

Tool Probe
Tool probes increase machine utilization and provide precision from the first cut. The
tool probe corrects and modifies tool lengths. Tools can be qualified
to 0.050 mm (0.002 in).

Part Probe
The part probe updates offsets and measures surfaces, diameters,
lengths and angles to insure part quality. Probing on both sides of
center provides up to four times the probe accuracy compared to
probing the radius.
The probe is stored in the tool changer.

Enclosure Options
The standard enclosure measures 2,775 mm
(109 in) from floor level. The optional full enclosure
covers the machines maximum cross slide travel.
Both enclosures meet CE requirements.
