The Future of BACnet and Peripherals

Steve Ferree, V.P. Marketing, FieldServer Technologies

BACnet
• BACnet has demonstrated its ability to adapt
• Common open-protocol developed via ASHRAE has
adapted
– All common media – RS-232, RS-485, Arcnet,
Ethernet, TCP/IP
– Many building systems – HVAC, lighting, life safety
– Future of XML
– Multi-vendor

The Future of BACnet

Multi-vendor
• Currently 158 Vendor ID’s issued for companies around
the world
• Multiple manufacturer’s and multiple products from major
BAS manufacturers including:
– Trane – Alerton
– Honeywell – Siemens
– Johnson Controls – Delta Controls
– Automated Logic – TAC

The Future of BACnet

Multiple Support Groups
• BACnet Manufacturer’s Association (BMA) –
manufacturers of BACnet products
• BACnet Testing Labs – testing interoperability
• ASHRAE – BACnet group, Standing Standard Project
Committee (SSPC) 135
• BIG-NA (+ BIG-EU, BIG-ME, BIG-AA, BIG-RU) – User
interest groups

The Future of BACnet

Worldwide BACnet
• Where is BACnet used?

The Future of BACnet

Open Systems
• What are Open Systems
– Interoperability between vendors
– Open, standard protocols
– Available to any vendor
– Flexible infrastructure
• Benefits
– Integration with multiple vendors
– Cost savings
– Efficiency improvement – time savings

The Future of BACnet

BACnet Future
• The vast majority of devices and systems installed today
utilize proprietary protocols
• A majority of new devices still utilize proprietary protocols
• There are competitive open protocols used in the BAS
industry and other open protocols used in other
industries

The Future of BACnet

Interoperability
• BACnet must work with other systems
• Legacy devices and systems will continue to be used in
buildings
• As buildings become “smarter” interoperability is a MUST
• Disparate systems can work together, using gateways,
tools and open technologies

The Future of BACnet

Interoperability
• Even as BACnet grows there will always be legacy
devices and new applications requiring interface of other
protocols to BACnet
• New open protocols for specific industries will require
interoperability to the building control system
– DALI – lighting
– NAFEM – food equipment
– ControlLogix, DeviceNet, EtherNet/IP, DH+, etc -
Process

The Future of BACnet

Working with other systems

The Future of BACnet

Meeting the User’s Needs
• Integrators will continue to install the systems that meets
the customer’s needs in an efficient and effective
manner
• Manufacturer’s have to keep up with these needs and
still compete in a competitive market utilizing whatever
protocol is necessary
• Users want a system designed for their specific needs,
yet, has a proven track record with others

The Future of BACnet

Interoperability via Gateways
• Gateways are necessary
– How many fire alarm panels have BACnet?
– What if the customer requires a lighting feature only
available on a lighting panel that utilizes another
protocol?
– What if the manufacturing plant wants to interface
process control information from a PLC?

The Future of BACnet

Gateways
• Gateways are available in a variety of forms:
– Internal – a board or module inside a device converts
from proprietary to open
– External hardware/software – external box with the
hardware interface combined with software translator
– Software – software inside the PC or DCS to convert
one protocol to another

BACnet Integration & Peripherals
AFD Integration
Mike Olson – ABB Drives
AFD Selection is Extremely Important
• Consider the effects of current and voltage harmonics on
the power distribution system
• Investigate under and over voltage ride-thru capabilities
• Investigate design reliability
– Choose a unit / manufacturer with tripless operation
• Investigate the Service and Support capabilities
• Make sure the Adjustable Frequency Drive (AFD) is
compatible with the BAS
– New, existing and future installations

The Future of BACnet

BAS Compatibility Investigation
• It is not enough to “talk” the protocol, its what you say!
• Partial point list:
– Output frequency and % speed
– Output current and torque
– Output KW and KWhr
– Drive temperature (can set alarm)
– Elapsed time
– DC bus voltage (directly proportional to AC voltage)
– Analog input and output values
– Fault type, fault history, and fault reset

The Future of BACnet

BAS Compatibility Investigation (cont.)
Points (cont.)
• Run / Stop status
• Hand / Auto Selection status
• Digital input and output status
Additional capabilities
• Can AFD control analog and digital outputs independent
of AFD functions (to control dampers, valves, etc.)?
• Can AFD monitor analog and digital inputs without AFD
actions (monitor temperatures, damper position, etc.)?

The Future of BACnet

Case Study - Dallas Office Tower
• User monitors % power over BAS
• If % power of any of 84 supply or return fans exceeds 50%,
algorithm triggers
• Algorithm checks IAQ, if acceptable, chilled water reset
accomplished
– Chilled water reset means rooms get satisfied faster, fan
drives slow down further
– Chilled water loop absorbs less heat. Less heat to reject
equals less chiller run time. Less chiller run time equals…
• Four month payback on AFD installation (84 Drives)

The Future of BACnet

Case Study - Toronto Office Tower
• Field panel on 27th floor, drive on 24th floor
• One twisted pair between the two devices
– Drive DO switches between electric's & pneumatics
– System pressure controlled by AFD PID Controller
• Set-point from field panel, drive loop powers sensor
• Feedback transmitted to field panel
– AI from chilled water sensor to AFD
• AFD transmits sensor data to field panel
• Field panel accomplishes PID Control & commands drive AO
to control chilled water valve
• No Unitary (TEC) controller in equipment room

The Future of BACnet

Case Study - New York 6 Cell Cooling
Tower
• Master drive has PID loop control using “sleep” and “wake-up”
feature
• Master drive uses DO with programmable time “on” and time
“off” delays to start lag cell and 4-20 ma frequency output to
control speed of lag cell
– First lag cell AFD uses it’s DO & 4-20 ma output to control
second lag cell as above
– Second lag cell AFD uses it’s DO & 4-20 ma output to control
third lag cell as above
• Etc., etc.
