Task 1: Reflective Writing Task (15%)

Due date: Week 5 (in the lecture or tutorial as specified by your lecturer)

Expected Learning Outcomes:

Acquire the basic knowledge of workplace communication

Understand the basic principles of health communication and the basic therapeutic
techniques for communicating with clients

Your Task:
For this task, you need to search relevant and useful sources of materials, and
recommend them to your classmates to better study therapeutic techniques. You
also need to provide concrete plans for improving your therapeutic techniques in the
future.

Part Ia – Data Search (5%):

1. Select 3 sources of materials (2 of them must be printed source e.g.
book/newspaper/ magazines etc) relevant to studying therapeutic techniques (i.e
communication skills for talking with patients). You COULD NOT use the
following 2 books provided on the teaching plan regarding the study of therapeutic
techniques:

Pagano, Michael P., and Ragan, Sandra L. Communication Skills for Professional Nurses, Newbury Park: Sage Publications,
1992

Sheldon, Lisa K. Communication for Nurses: Talking with Patients. Thorofare, N.J.: SLACK Inc., 2004.

2. give a short evaluation of each source.

Part Ib – Reflective Writing (95%):

You need to write a review of about 200 words (±20 words) about your plan on
improving your therapeutic technique.

- Reviewing all the therapeutic techniques covered in class, in your opinion, what is
the most important element of being a caring health care consultant? Why?
- As a student, what can do you to improve your therapeutic techniques? Can you
suggest a plan for developing and improving your therapeutic techniques in the
future?
- The front line staff at the hospitals in Hong Kong are constantly being criticized
for the service they provide, in your opinion (you could draw examples from the
CC 2046 English for Workplace Communication Sem 2, 2009/10

therapeutic techniques you have learnt), what could be done to improve the
relationship between the medical staff and the patients?

1. Make sure your reflection is original: no plagiarism is allowed.
2. You should submit hard copy of your assignment. You essay should be typed
using Times New Roman Font size 12 with double line spacing.
3. Please write down the total number of words on your reflective writing.
