Architecture 2015
The Ashgate architecture list aims to bring you the most fascinating and innovative research on architecture and how it relates to
society, politics, culture and place. We are keen to include titles which turn the focus away from the Western world and you will
find several titles which focus on Africa, Asia, Australia and the Middle East. The Architecture of Edwin Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew,
while contributing to this global vision, also adds to another strand we are particularly keen on expanding volumes which explore
womens role in designing space. We are pleased to be able to offer some major new works which revisit some seminal figures or
works from twentieth century design, including a full English translation and critical analysis of Bruno Tauts The City Crown and
an original study on Pevsners years at the BBC.
One of the most exciting new approaches to the study of architecture can be seen in our series, Design Research in Architecture,
in which the authors both practising architects and academics integrate original design work with cutting-edge theory to
create work which is both insightful, intellectually challenging and aesthetically stunning. No less ground-breaking, we have
several volumes which examine spatial theory as it relates to architecture, such as Urban Revolution Now, The Architecture
of the Illusive Distance, Phenomenologies of the City and The Material Imagination.
We are building up our list of titles on landscape architecture I am particularly excited about the forthcoming Pietro Porcinai and
the Landscape of Modern Italy and we are actively looking to expand this field of publications, as well as other areas in our list
such as interior architecture and conservation. The final volume of Practical Building Conservation: Earth, Brick and Terracotta,
will be published over the summer, completing this remarkable 10-volume set, which has become an essential reference to any
architect or academic working in architectural conservation.
I hope you find the titles on offer stimulating and enjoyable and that you will contact me should you wish to add your book to this
list. Please dont hesitate to contact me to discuss or send me your book proposals!
With best wishes,
Valerie Rose, Publisher

Atmospheres: Aesthetics
of Emotional Spaces
Tonino Griffero, University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy
It was Tonino Griffero who first made the theory of
atmospheres known to the Italian audience. We now
appreciate even more his publishing the book in English,
which not only describes the phenomenology and theory
of atmospheres, but sets this within its historical and
international context.
Gernot Bhme, Professor of Philosophy emeritus,
Technical University of Darmstadt and Director of the
Institute for Practical Philosophy in Darmstadt, Germany
This book examines the role of atmospheres in daily life,
and defines their main characteristics. Outlining the typical
phenomenological situations in which we experience
atmospheres, it assesses their impact on contemporary
aesthetics. It puts forward a philosophical approach which
systematises a constellation of affects and climates,
finds patterns in the emotional tones of different spaces
(affordances) and assesses their impact on the felt body. It
also critically discusses the spatial turn invoked by several
of the social sciences, and argues that there is a need for a
non-psychologistic rethinking of the philosophy of emotions.

This book examines the liveability and affordability of twentyfirst-century residential architecture. Focussing on the
architects and communities commitment to these housing
programmes, as well as that of the private building sector, it
stresses the importance of the context of the neighbourhoods
in which they are placed, which are either in the process of
urban transition or already gentrified. In doing so, the book
shows how, and to what extent, twenty-first-century dwelling
architecture developments can help to create an integrated
sense of community, diminish social and demographic
exclusions in a neighbourhood and incorporate peoples
desires as to what their buildings should look like.

Cityscapes in History
Creating the Urban Experience
Edited by Katrina Gulliver, University of New South
Wales, Australia, and Helna Tth, Ludwig Maximilian
University of Munich, Germany
Cityscapes in History: Creating the Urban Experience explores
the ways in which scholars from a variety of disciplines
history, history of art, geography and architecture think
about and study the urban environment. Through such an
approach it is possible to make fascinating connections
between such seemingly diverse topics as 15th-century
France and 20th-century United States, thus raising valuable
questions about scholarly approaches to urban studies.

Architectural Projects of
Marco Frascari: The Pleasure
of a Demonstration
Sam Ridgway, School of Architecture &
Built Environment, The University of Adelaide,
South Australia
Frascari is best-known for his remarkable texts, which
explore the intellectual, theoretical and practical substance
of the architectural discipline. Throughout his academic
career, he continued to work on numerous architectural
projects, including exhibitions, competition entries, and
designs for approximately 35 buildings. Sam Ridgway draws
on a wide selection of Frascaris texts, including his richly
poetic book Monsters of Architecture, to explore the themes
of representation, demonstration, and anthropomorphism.
Three of Frascaris delightful buildings are then brought
to light and interpreted, revealing a sophisticated and
interwoven relationship between texts and buildings.

Architecture in an Age
of Uncertainty
Edited by Benjamin Flowers, Georgia Institute
of Technology, USA
After two decades which saw the construction industry
flourish, has come a sudden period of instability, where
architecture firms have been jettisoning employees at an
unprecedented rate as building projects dry up. This edited
volume brings together scholars, critics, and architects
to discuss the present state of uncertainty in the practice
and discipline of architecture. The chapters are organized
into three main areas of inquiry: economics, practice, and
technology. Within this larger framework, authors explore
issues of security, ecological design, disaster architecture,
the future of architectural practice, and the ethical
obligations of the social practice of design.

A Life in Education
and Architecture
Mary Beaumont Medd
Catherine Burke, University of Cambridge, UK
PRIZE: WINNER OF ANNE BLOOMFIELD BOOK PRIZE
2014, HISTORY OF EDUCATION SOCIETY
Burkes investigation, through the use of a chronologically
structured biography, astutely develops the connection
between architecture and education, but also seeks to
establish a further connection with Marys own life. Using
original manuscripts, plans, photographs and documentation,
the text explores the significance and impact of Marys early
life and her formation as an individual, through to her training
and successive designs which continually linked structure
with individualism.

Suspending Modernity:
The Architecture of Franco Albini
Kay Bea Jones, School of Architecture, Ohio State
University, USA
Suspending Modernity: The Architecture of Franco Albini,
visually compelling and written in accessible language, will
be a valuable resource for scholars, students, architects, and
others interested in Italian modernism.
Journal of Architectural Education
Kay Bea Jones illuminating study of selected works by
Studio Albini will reintroduce his contributions to one of
the most productive periods in Italian design. Suspending
Modernity follows the evolution of Albinis most important
buildings and projects, even as they reveal his apprehensive
attitudes about the modern condition. Albini clarified
the vital role of tradition in modern architecture as he
experimented with domestic space. His cohort defied CIAM
ideologies to re-socialize postwar housing and speculate on
ways of reviving Italian cities. Jones argues here that Albinis
masterful use of materials and architectural expression mark
an epic paradigm shift in the modern period.

Emerging Landscapes
Between Production and Representation
Edited by Davide Deriu, Krystallia Kamvasinou
and Eugenie Shinkle, University of Westminster, UK
Drawing on the synergies between the fields of architecture
and photography, this collection takes a multidisciplinary
approach, combining practice-based research with scholarly
essays. It explores and critically reassesses the interface
between representation the imaginary and symbolic
shaping of the human environment and production the
physical and material changes wrought on the land. At a
time of environmental crisis and the end of nature, shifting
geopolitical boundaries and economic downturn, Emerging
Landscapes reflects on the state of landscape and its
future, mapping those practices that creatively address the
boundaries between possibility, opportunity and action in
imagining and shaping landscape.

Recently in many architectural schools efforts intensified to
further develop architectural research. Exciting new avenues
are being explored, relying upon the design skills of architects
and urban designers, combining them with intellectual rigor
and in-depth thinking, in order to imagine new spatialities
and to unfold hitherto unknown spatial experiences. This
series highlights the innovative results of these explorations,
opening up a new world of path-breaking research.

Exhibitions and the Development
of Modern Planning Culture
Edited by Robert Freestone, University of New South
Wales and Marco Amati, La Trobe University, Victoria,
Australia
A panoramic contribution to the history of the modern city,
revealing for the first time how temporary exhibits have left
a permanent mark upon the urban landscape, and which is
where planning culture comes in on societys perceptions
of past, present and future.
Michael Hebbert, University College London, UK
Bringing together a range of international case studies, this
volume explores the highly visual genre of public planning
exhibitions worldwide. In doing so, it provides a unique lens
on the development of modern urban planning and design
from the late 19th century to the present day. Focussing
mainly on the first half of the 20th century, it looks in
particular at historic exhibitions which sought to transform
urban societys understanding of the possibilities of planning
as a force for social betterment.

Geographical Aesthetics
Imagining Space, Staging Encounters
Edited by Harriet Hawkins, Royal Holloway, University
of London, UK and Elizabeth Straughan, University of
Glasgow, UK
This carefully-crafted work interrogates how aesthetics
is politicized, spatialized, thought, and felt. Seamlessly,
synthetically, Hawkins, Straughan and colleagues critically
and creatively analyse elements of the aesthetic in
geographical encounters that reinvigorate a geography of
surfaces. The effect is to demonstrate the importance and
utility of a richly geo-aesthetic understanding of the world.
Elaine Stratford, University of Tasmania, Australia
Bringing together timely commentaries by international,
interdisciplinary scholars, Geographical Aesthetics is the
first volume to make questions of geographical aesthetics
a substantive concern. It reworks the historical relations
between geography and aesthetics, and reconsiders how
it is we might understand aesthetics. It then reaffirms the
value of aesthetics in relation to key intellectual concerns
within Geography and explores the geographies of the
aesthetic, in particular the spatialities and imaginaries that
mark its theorisations. In renewing aesthetics as a site of
investigation, but also an analytic object through which we
can think about the encounters, the meetings and minglings
of the world, what also emerges is powerful reworking of
our geographical imaginary of the aesthetic.

Julia King
During his lifetime, the work of architect George Hadfield
(17631826) was highly regarded, both in England and
the United States. Since his death, however, Hadfields
contributions to architecture have slowly faded from view,
and few of his buildings survive. In order to reassess
Hadfields career and work, this book draws upon a wide
selection of written and visual sources to reconstruct his
life and legacy.

Gordon Matta-Clarks
Conical Intersect
Sculpture, Space, and the Cultural Value
of Urban Imagery
Peter Muir, Associate Lecturer, Open University, UK
In this in-depth analysis, Peter Muir argues that Gordon
Matta-Clarks Conical Intersect (1975) is emblematic of
Henri Lefebvres understanding of arts function in relation
to urban space. By engaging with Lefebvres theory in
conjunction with the perspectives of other writers, such as
Michel de Certeau, Jacques Derrida, and George Bataille, the
book elicits a story that presents the artworks significance,
origins and legacies. Muir argues that Conical Intersect
is much more than an artistic hole. Due to its location at
Plateau Beaubourg in Paris, it is simultaneously an object
of art and an instrument of social critique.

Place-making for the
Imagination: Horace Walpole
and Strawberry Hill
Marion Harney, University of Bath, UK
Based on doctoral research, this well-illustrated book
provides new analysis of Horace Walpoles Strawberry Hill,
encompassing his extraordinary mid-eighteenth century
house, garden, and collection at Twickenham on Londons
Thames River. Harney takes as her thesis the idea that Walpole
was influenced by ideas of association and imagination,
especially as earlier articulated in Joseph Addisons celebrated
Spectator articles The Pleasures of the Imagination (1712).
Rather than seeing Strawberry Hill as some grotesque Gothick
precursor to later, more strident and archaeologically correct
Gothic Revival, Harney argues for a reappraisal of Walpoles
ensemble as a carefully integrated and philosophically cogent
epresentation of his aesthetic beliefs.

Remembering the
Cultural Geographies
of a Childhood Home
Peter Hughes Jachimiak, University of South Wales, UK
A wonderful example of doing cultural geography: of
evocative and resonant auto-ethnography. A kaleidoscopic
view of the 1970s in which the places, experiences, beliefs
and reveries of a childhood in South Wales and the books,
comics, television programmes, films and popular pursuits
of the period constantly shift to create new and provocative
perceptions of the cultural fabric and transformations of
that difficult decade. A valuable, creative and highly readable
addition to the literature on geographies of childhood, and
especially on the impact of media.
Mike Pearson, Aberystwyth University, UK
This book is primarily structured by the authors memories
of living in his own Welsh childhood home during the 1970s.
Employing an innovative auto-ethnographic approach
to investigate the otherness of the places that make up
the childhood home and its neighbourhood in relation to
memory-derived and memory-imbued cultural geographies,
Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood
Home is concerned with childhood spaces and childrens
perspectives of those spaces and, consequentially, with the
personalised locations that make up the childhood family
home and its immediate surroundings.

This book not only shows how architects can learn from
traditional or vernacular dwellings in order to create
habitations for the people of low-income groups in public
housing scenarios, but also demonstrates how the
architecture of the economically underprivileged classes
goes beyond culturally-inspired tectonic interpretations
of vernacular traditions by architects for high profile
clients. It explores how the resourceful dwellings of the
underprivileged inhabitants of the great cities in developing
parts of the world pioneered certain concepts of modernism
and contemporary design practices such as sustainable and
de-constructivist design.
