For students joining

KG 1, KG 2, Grade 1
(Levels A, B, C)
Dear Guardian,
Please note the following important information for all children joining KG1, KG2 and Grade 1
for the academic year 2015 - 2016.
First day of school starts as follows

KG1 (Level A): Sunday 30 August, 2015

KG2 (Level B): Tuesday 1 Sep, 2015
Gr1 (Level C): Wednesday 2 Sep, 2015
Gr2 G6: Monday 31 August, 2015
Gr7 G13: Sunday 30 August, 2015
1.

Bus test runs: For schools that offer a school-bus service, starting Tuesday 25th August
and for three days the school will conduct bus test runs where the drivers will go round
the city (without the children) to determine the best route to take. Make sure that the
school has an exact and precise address and map so the driver will not miss your
residence.

2.

Start bringing your children to school on Tuesday 25th August, 2015. Initially,
children could spend half an hour during the earlier hours of the morning playing on the
tricycles and cars, and using the play equipment (climbing frame, slide, balls, etc.) The
purpose is to familiarize children with the environment and the staff, so the first day of
school will not be with strangers in a strange environment.

3.

On Tuesday 25th look for the boards showing class lists and classroom plans. Find
out in which class your child is placed, locate the classroom. This is important so that on
the first day of school no time is wasted looking for the classroom.

4.

Obtain a name-tag for your child and make sure (s)he wears it for the first day to school.
As you obtain the name-tag give the name and description of the person who is to
collect the child at the end of each school day. If your child is to use a bus different from
the school bus, give the name of the person who will take him there. The child will only
be handed to an adult known to the school.

On the first day of school

5.

On the morning of the first day and onward: Children are welcome into school at 7:30
AM, but please make sure that they arrive no later than 7:50. You should encourage your

16-May-2015

275198405
child to say goodbye to you at the main entrance and go to the classroom alone. The
sooner this is achieved the better.
6.

Children collected by parents: On the first day of school remind the Supervisor of the
person who will collect the child at the end of the day. The gate will be locked until the
bell goes at 3:10 PM. Once the bell rings the gate will be opened, and guardians can
enter the building respecting the one-way traffic, so they enter through the entrance door
and leave through the exit door (regardless of which door is nearer to the classroom.
Collect children at the classroom door. The teacher will only hand the child to the
designated adult. Guardians are politely reminded to wait patiently in a queue so that
the class teacher can dismiss the children in an orderly manner. If guardians want to send
a relative to collect their child, they should inform the school in good time. No child may
be collected before 3:10 PM.

7.

Children who use the school bus will be escorted to the bus.

8.

Students collected by their guardians or drivers outside the school grounds: Drivers
are requested to be considerate of others, and are kindly requested to park their car
away from the school entrance as opposed to stopping the car in front of the school
entrance and waiting for their children to get in.

9.

Late Room: Guardians who cannot collect the children at 3:10 PM should find out about
the Late Room procedure. After 3.20 PM students are supervised in the Late Room
till 4.00 PM.

10.

Labelling: Make sure all items belonging to your child (lunchbox, bag, books, clothes)
are labelled with the name and computer number. Use a permanent marker pen.

Food
11.

Lunchboxes: Your child should have breakfast before (s)he comes to school. (S)he
should have in the labelled lunchbox, (name. class, computer number) a morning
snack consisting of a sandwich (preferably brown bread) and a drink like water or juice
(a whole fruit is preferable to juice; too much juice promotes diabetes). The lunchbox
should also contain lunch consisting of a sandwich (brown bread), vegetables, (tomato,
carrot, lettuce, broccoli, etc.) fruit and water. Children should not bring fizzy drinks,
chocolate or candy bars to school. No bottles or cans are allowed. Lunch must be brought
by the child in the morning. No deliveries will be accepted. Helpers will encourage the
children to eat their food. Children may not chew gum in the school. Please do not
permit your child to bring money to school.

Clothing
12.

School uniform is compulsory, and it can be purchased from the school bookshop.
Students need to buy three or four sets. Students may not wear football boots, flip-flops
or slippers. Please ask for a description of the school uniform.

13.

Spare clothes: Please send a change of clothes to school with your child (including
underwear). This will be kept in the classroom in case of any accidents. After an activity
like art or play a child may need to change his/her clothing, and sometimes accidents
happen. Make sure that your childrens spare clothes are properly labelled with the name

16-May-2015

275198405
and computer number of your child. (A computer number is issued the day after fees
are paid. Please make sure you collect it.) Soiled clothes will be sent home with the child.
14.

Jewellery: Children are not allowed to wear jewellery or expensive watches to school.
Girls may wear small stud earrings in the earlobe, but nothing else.

15.

Boys should have short hair, with no designs, and may not wear rings anywhere.

Books

16.

Books will be given to your child on the first day. The cost is added to the first
instalment. The settlement must be done along with the first instalment of fees
due at that time. These books should remain in school, and not be taken home on a
daily basis. Guardians who want to borrow the books can do so provided they
remember to bring them back before the first lesson of the following day so the child will
not be deprived of their use in class. (N.B. If e-books are to be issued, you will be
informed and charged accordingly).

17.

Any completed worksheets will be put in the childs bag at the end of the week and
these should be kept at home.

18.

A class reader is provided in Gr 1 Level C along with a CD. It is useful if the child
listens to the CD for five/ten minutes every day, to help his/her pronunciation, intonation,
speed and fluency skills in English.

Academic Information
19.

For Grade 1 (Level C) students, CAT reports (Continuous Assessment Test reports)
will be issued twice during each term. These will be accompanied by the CAT
examination papers. Parents should study these papers and return them to school on the
following day. An End-of-Term report will be issued after the End-of-Term CAT exams.

20.

End of term reports are issued at the end of each of the three terms but they are not sent
by post. These reports should be collected from the school administration. The end of
year report is of special importance because it gives promotion information.

21.

Queries: If you have any queries about your childs marks or academic progress, then
please make an appointment with the Academic Quality Controller. Please do not
speak directly to the teacher or send her notes or instructions. All notes should be
addressed to the administration.

Web-School Service
22.

Our free-of-charge Web-school Service, which allows parents to view at home the upto-date records of their children (marks/grades, lateness/absence, infractions, etc.), can be
accessed by all parents. To register simply ask for an application form as you register.
If you forget, then send an email to webparent@iscad.ae from a confidential email
address to which only parents/guardians (not students) have access. Once we receive this
email we will process the request then give you a password to access your childrens
record.

Health
23.

Medication: If your child is taking a prescribed course of medicine and has to take it
during school hours, you must give the medicine to the school nurse every morning first
thing in the morning. The school nurse will ensure that the children take their medicine
at the correct time. Please write your childs name, class and time of medication clearly
on the container.

24.

To inform us of illness, guardians must call the infants school Supervisor or secretary
(not the teacher) and inform of the reason for absence from school and approximate
period of absence.

25.

Telephone numbers: In case of an emergency (e.g. an accident requiring medical

attention) the school should have a working telephone number, not one where no one will
answer the phone. Please supply the number and, in case it changes, make sure we have
the new one. Make sure you have given the administration all the important medical
information.

General Rules
26.

Punctuality: All students must be in class at 7:55AM. It is extremely disruptive to the

class for students to arrive late. The lesson starts at 8:00 sharp in the morning, and
students will not be accepted in class if they arrive at 8:00 or later. At 7:58 AM the
outside gate will be locked. Parents of late students will have to explain the lateness to
the Head Supervisor before the child is admitted to class. We regret that we cannot
allow students who are often late to continue to disrupt the learning process.

27.

Parents are not allowed to visit classes.

28.

Birthdays: We cannot accept birthday cakes or presents, or arrange for birthday

parties at school. Also, our staff cannot accept presents for any occasion. If you wish
your child to invite other children to a birthday party at home you may send invitation
notes/cards to the other children with your child. We will not give out telephone numbers
of classmates or friends.

29.

Importance of regular attendance. Guardians should be aware of the importance of

regular attendance. Keeping a child away from school for minor reasons can hinder
progress in all areas of academic and social development.

30.

School messages are sent home by putting them into your childs bag. Please check the
bag regularly.

31.

email: In case the school needs to send confidential information to parents, parents are
kindly requested to provide the Administration with a personal email address.

administration to make sure that the bus driver knows where to pick up and drop your
children. Younger children who use the school bus will be escorted to the bus.

7.

Labelling: Make sure all items belonging to your child (lunchbox, bag, books, clothes) are
labelled with the name and computer number. Use a permanent marker pen.

Books

8.

Books for Grades 2, 3, 4: Books will be given to your child on the first day. The cost is

9.

Books for Grades 5 and 6: Books should be purchased by the parents from the
bookshop. An SMS will be sent to all parents informing them of the date when to start
purchasing the books. Books should be purchased before 31st August. The more you

delay the larger the waiting crowd and the longer the wait in a queue, which may
cause you considerable irritation. If e-books are issued, you will be charged for them
accordingly.

10.

In Grades 2 and 3, class readers have an accompanying CD. It is useful if the child listens

For students in Grades 2 to 4, CAT reports (Continuous Assessment Test reports) will
be issued twice during each term. These will be accompanied by the CAT examination
papers. Parents should study these papers and return them to school on the following day.

12.

Students in Grades 5 and 6 take two written examinations every week. Teachers mark
the papers and return them to the administration (for checking) within a week. The papers
are returned to the students the following day. Parents are expected to study these exam
papers and sign them. Watch out for the possibility of children changing the marks. If a
week after the exam date a child makes the excuse that the teacher did not yet return the
papers please contact the school administration, explain the situation, or ask for an
appointment with the Academic Controller.

13.

AMS tests: The Academic Monitoring System tests the concepts taught during the
previous week. In maths, AMS tests start in Grade3, and in Arabic and French in Grade 4.
These tests pinpoint the concepts not yet mastered by the children.

14.

To access AMS results parents may show their children how to recognise (and then copy)
the descriptions of the concepts that they have not mastered. Alternatively, they may want
to check the AMS results themselves by examining the results that will be posted weekly
on specialised AMS boards.

15.

End of term reports are issued at the end of each of the three terms but they are not sent
by post. These reports should be collected from the school administration. The end of year
report is of special importance because it gives promotion information.

the longer the wait in a queue, which may cause you considerable irritation . If your
child receives e-books, your account will be charged accordingly.

3.

Students should come to school once or twice during the week before the first day of
school (i.e. between Sunday 23rd August and Thursday 27th August). The first day of
school is Sunday, 30th August. Students should look for the boards showing class lists
and classroom plans, locate the class/section and then go to the classroom. Students
should know how to go from the school entrance to the classroom, and how to come from
the classroom to the school entrance. This is important so that on the first day of school
no time is wasted looking for the correct classroom.

On the first day of school

4.

On the morning of the first day and onward: Students are welcome into school at 7:30
am, but please make sure that they arrive no later than 7:50 AM.

16-May-2015

5.

Students collected by their guardians or drivers: guardians agree with students on a

meeting point outside school grounds. Drivers are requested to be considerate of others,
and are kindly requested to park their car away from the school entrance as opposed to
stopping the car in front of the school gate and waiting for their wards to get in.

6.

Students who use the school bus: Please arrange that a clear map is given to the
administration to make sure that the bus driver knows where to pick up and drop your
children.

7.

Labelling: Make sure all items belonging to your children (lunchbox, bag, books, clothes)
are labelled with the name and computer number. Use a permanent marker pen or a
printed sewed-on label.

Academic Information
8.

Students take two Periodic examinations per week. For the written part, teachers mark
the papers and return them to the administration (for checking) within a week. The papers
are returned to the students the day following. Parents who want to know how their
children are doing should ask go to web-parent or ask to see these marked papers.
Watch out for the possibility of students changing the marks. If a week after the exam
date a student makes the excuse that the teacher did not yet return the papers please contact
the school administration, explain the situation, or ask for an appointment with the
Academic Controller.

9.

Answering the Basic Questions: For most courses students are given a set of Basic
Questions that test the most important points of every chapter, and every Periodic Test
(given weekly, testing each subject monthly) will have 70% of the marks on questions
taken directly from the basic Questions. In every lesson, your student may encounter one or
more basic questions. These questions should be answered in writing, as homework, that
same evening. Students who do this never fail any homework or periodic exam.

10.

Homework: For most courses students are given homework that consists mainly of the
basic questions. Students are given the homework questions and their complete answers so
that if they fail to answer a question they can study the answer. Every week, the students
are tested in school in the homework of the previous week. The homework counts as 25%
of the total mark of a course, so students who solve the homework at home and then in
school under exam conditions will secure 25% of the full mark right away.

11.

Studying for the periodic (weekly) exams: Every week students take two or three written
exams that test the material taught over approximately three to four weeks. A good time to
study for these exams would be during the preceding weekend. Some students do not know
how to study. Parents can help their children by revising with them the Study Guide, which
can be obtained from the school. Please remember that 70% of the marks are on Basic
Questions, which are basically the homework questions.

12.

End of term reports are issued at the end of each of the three terms but they are not sent
by post. These reports should be collected from the school administration. The end of year
report is of special importance because it gives promotion information.
