ABSTRACT

Morindacitrifolia(noni)fruitjuicehasbeenapprovedasasafefoodinmanynations.
Afewcasesofhepatitisinpeoplewhohadbeendrinkingnonijuicehavebeen
reported,eventhoughnocausallinkcouldbeestablishedbetweentheliverinjury
andingestionofthejuice.Tomorefullyevaluatethehepatotoxicpotentialofnonifruit
juice,invitrohepatotoxicitytestswereconductedinhumanlivercells,HepG2cellline.
AsubchronicoraltoxicitytestofnonifruitwasalsoperformedinSpragueDawley
(SD)ratstoprovidebenchmarkdataforunderstandingthesafetyofnonijuice,
withoutthepotentialconfoundingvariablesassociatedwithmanycommercialnoni
juiceproducts.FreezedriedfilterednonifruitpureedidnotdecreaseHepG2cell
viabilityorinduceneutrallipidaccumulationandphospholipidosis.Therewereno
histopathologicalchangesorevidenceofdoseresponsesinhematologicaland
clinicalchemistrymeasurements,includingliverfunctiontests.Thenoobserved
adverseeffectlevel(NOAEL)forfreezedriednonifruitpureeisgreaterthan6.86g/kg
bodyweight,equivalenttoapproximately90mlofnonifruitjuice/kg.Thesefindings
corroboratepreviousconclusionsthatconsumptionofnonifruitjuiceisunlikelyto
induceadverselivereffects.
