Rooms in student houses

The Studentenwerk Jena-Weimar administers 10 student houses in Weimar with approximately 1100 rooms. The university
does not have its own accommodation.
Normally up to 5 students share living quarters. Each student has his own room, the kitchen and the bathroom are shared.
The rent in student houses varies depending on the quality, room size and length of stay. The overall rent is from about
120,00 to 270,00 per month. In this monthly rent all additional expenses are covered including electricity, heating and
water. The minimum rental period is six months. For shorter occupancy the rent will be calculated at a higher rate.
At the time of signing the lease contract the student must pay an Euro 200,00 deposit.
Please find an overview of the dormitories and general information on this page: http://www.stw-thueringen.de/
(http://www.studentenwerk-thueringen.de/index.php?id=56)). If you are interested in one of the rooms, please send the
completed application form (attached in your information package) back to me. We will confirm your acceptance at the
Bauhaus-Universitt on the application and forward the form to the Studentenwerk Jena-Weimar.
As a special service for the foreign students, mentors are available from the student council on these days. These student
mentors will be available to greet you upon arrival (but dont pick you up at the train station). If you let them know the
exact time of your arrival in Weimar, you can be helped to your new accommodation. (This is particularly important if you
are arriving in the evening or at the weekend). They can assist you to get the key for your room and with the signing of
your rental contract (http://www.studentenwerk-thueringen.de/index.php?id=131#c1039. Please do not forget to tell the
Studentenwerk your arrival date as well as your E-Mail address. But the best days to arrive are from Monday till Friday.

Rooms in shared flats

Many students in Weimar live in shared flats and houses rented from private landlords. Several students rent a flat
together. Everyone has their own room and share the kitchen and bathroom. The costs are divided between the tenants,

calculated per square meter. Depending upon room size and comfort the prices range between 160-255,00 Euros per
month. German students who are conducting part of their studies abroad, often offer their room in shared flats to foreign
students for their limited stay. Usually these rooms are
furnished, which is not the case when renting new flats. One advantage of this type of accommodation is that you can
organise it in advance by E-Mail. By contacting the other tenants you can check that life style s are
compatible. Sharing a flat and living with German students provides intensive cultural contact, which greatly assists in
acclimatising to a new country. It will also help you to learn the language faster.
Note: Often it is possible to make arrangements over email. Verbal promises or E-Mails are considered to be
contracts; also your student landlord needs to know your agreement is secure.
Please check whether:
a) the extra costs such as water, gas, and electricity are included in your rent?
b) the room is furnished or unfurnished?
Offers for rooms in shared flats can be found at the following website:
http://www.uni-weimar.de/cms/index.php?id=1623&pw=11
If you have difficulties to find a private room in a shared flat on this website, please send me an email with your personal
details (Nationality, home University, faculty ) and what youre looking for the flat (furnished, central heating, size.)I
will put your demand on this website and students can contact you directly by email. Very often I get offers for a furnished
room in a shared flat from our students, who are going to study abroad for one or two semesters or from ERASMUS
students, who are finishing their studies here in Weimar.

What to do if you do not find a suitable room in advance

If you do not find accommodation by using the options mentioned above you should reserve a bed in a youth hostel or a
pension for your first few days in Weimar http://www.weimar.de/de/tourismus/startseite/uebernachten/
- and, personally make contact with the Studentwerk Jena-Weimar (Mrs.Schroeter, Marienstr. 15B, Weimar) to ask about
available options.
- and, check the University notice boards for offers of rooms in shared flats.
- and, use the Studentwerk Jena-Weimars lists of private rooms, and the services of private real estate agents (these rooms
will only rarely be offered furnished).
We wish you a pleasant journey to Weimar. After you have arrived and accessed your room, please contact me:
International Office, Bauhaus University, Coudraystrasse 13A, room 113.
