Listening I

SECOND TERM
Introduction
In order to become good listeners and speakers, students need strategies that will help them meet
their listening and speaking challenges in and beyond the language classroom. Listening to isolated
listening exercises provides only limited instruction; students need to learn a process for each
stage of listening. Similarly, rather than simply speaking and being evaluated in response to a
question, students need to learn the language and strategies for successfully engaging in
classroom discussions strategies that they can apply throughout their academic career.

Didactic orientation
Apart from listening, note-taking strategies focus the students attention on the accurate and
concise recording of material delivered during the process. Effective note-taking is the cornerstone
of effective studying.
The listening material includes several types of spoken English in the form of short stories. Working
through the stories, students do a wide variety of listening tasks, including listening for specific
ideas and following directions. A major focus is put on helping students learn note-taking an
essential academic skill.
