PART B (5 x16 = 80 Marks)
11. (a) (i) The ratio of successive amplitudes of a viscously damped single degree of
freedom system is found to be 18:1. Determine the ratio of successive
amplitudes if the amount of damping is (i) doubled, and (ii) halved.

(6)

(ii) A viscously damped system has a stiffness of 5000 N/m, critical damping
constant of 0.2 N-s/mm, and a logarithmic decrement of 2.0.If the system is
given an initial velocity of 1 m/sec, determine the maximum displacement of
the system.

(b) (i) For a vibrating system, m = 10 kg, k = 2500 N/m, and c = 45 N-sec/m. A
harmonic force of amplitude 180 N and frequency 3.5 Hz acts on the mass. If
the initial displacement and velocity of the mass are 15 mm and 5 m/sec
respectively, find the complete solution representing the motion of the mass.
