GROWING
NUMBERS

Thank you for flying with Wizz Air today,

I am pleased you chose to fly with us. It
seems unbelievable that over a decade has
passed since we launched our rst flight from
Katowice, Poland with just one aircraft on
19 May 2004. We started out with the
ambitious goal of establishing a successful
low-cost airline operating in Central and
Eastern Europe.
Thankfully, our tremendous efforts and
hard work have been rewarded, because
since that auspicious date, spurred on by
our dedication to constantly improve our
passengers experience, our ambitions
and achievements have grown year on year.
Since our maiden flight we have continued to
not only expand and evolve (we are now the
largest low cost airline in the region and one
of the largest in Europe), but we have also
continued to improve the travel experience of

passengers with more routes and innovative

new products.
But rest assured, we wont stop there. It
is our mission to continue to evolve, add to
and improve our services and make changes
for the better. In fact, right now our brand is
being totally refreshed, which will translate
into even better services.
In April 2015, we added two new A320
aircraft to our fleet and announced further
exciting developments. For example, in May
2015 we are introducing allocated seating
on all our routes. This means you can now
enjoy automatic free allocated seating
whenever you book your flight. Furthermore,
as a sign of our commitment to nding and
supporting high quality cadet pilots we have
also created a new Cadet Pilot Program
beginning this summer.
But thats not all. From July 2015, we
will be commencing flights to Iceland, the
Land of Fire and Ice, representing our 38th
country of operation. The new service will
operate from Gdansk to Reykjavik. We also
announced our 21st base, in Lublin, Poland
from September 2015. Going forward we are
launching an even better and faster website,
along with a handy fare nder tool so you
can more easily nd the lowest fares.
And if that is not enough, we are rening
the way we look by rolling out a new livery
for all our aircraft. We now have a fresher,
more vibrant and sophisticated looking
brand. It may well be that you are already
sitting in one of our new Airbus A320s
featuring the new style.
But whatever aircraft you are on, its time
to sit back, relax and enjoy your flight while
our experienced staff take care of you. You
know you are on a winning team when you
fly with Wizz Air!

osnian rapper Frenkie is a big fan

of Bruce Lee. Especially the martial
arts stars advice to be like water - to
be formless and shapeless. In fact, the
musician has had plenty of opportunities
to put this philosophy into practice.
Born in Bijeljina, his family moved
to Germany when war broke out in the
1990s. There he got into hip-hop and
grafti pursuits he carried on when he
returned to Tuzla aged 16. Frenkie (real
name Adnan Hamidovi), is now 33 and
one of the best-known hip-hop artists in
the former Yugoslavia he travels widely
to perform in the Balkans, as well as the
US, Australia and Scandinavia. You could
say hes the Balkan Jay Z.
Calling Frenkie at home, he explains
that Tuzla became the centre of Bosnian
hip-hop through FMJAM radio station.
He joined a collective of rappers who
addressed the problems of their post-war
country, sampling old Bosnian bands for
their beats. We fought against hate and
segregation, he says. We still do.

FROM HIP-HOP TO THE HULK

Frenkie has worked with rapper Masta Ace and
wrote a song for the lm The Incredible Hulk

This collective has now branched out

to do its own thing which for Frenkie
includes working in different media. He
has released several albums and featured
in the documentary, Border, a lm that
stressed the importance of dialogue
between ethnic groups. Talking about
problems is the rst step to solving
them, he says. Some prefer to ignore
the challenges our country faces, but
I tackle them head-on.
Its this kind of political expression,
says Frenkie, that makes Balkan
hip-hop different to its mainstream
US equivalent. Still, he admires plenty
of American rappers, including KRS-1
and Jay Z, and
hes developed an
intriguing tradition
of recording one
track on each album
about a famous
gure. As well as
Bruce Lee, so far hes rapped about Chuck
Norris and FC Barcelona footballer
Lionel Messi. It might seem strange, he
says, but their characters t my music.
Frenkies latest project another
documentary involves working with
Sarajevos Philharmonic Orchestra. For
this lm, he says, hell travel on a graftisprayed train to different Bosnian cities
to meet musicians and perform: We
dont have everything planned just yet.
Beyond this, well have to wait and see
where his water flows next. Frenkie may
keep shape-shifting, but one thing will
remain constant: hell stay true to his
roots. I make a living from what I love,
he adds. I wouldnt be here if I didnt.

It might sound strange, but

its easy to become engrossed in the work

of the exceptional cartoonist who gave us
characters like Nero and Nibbs.
Across the road is the Belgian Comic
Strip Center (comicscenter.net) where
youll be greeted by the rocket that
carried Hergs Tintin to the moon and
one of Peyos Smurfs. Inside, the stories
behind Belgiums most famous comic
strips are told through displays including
a bar-room scene featuring Maurice De
Beveres Lucky Luke, the cowboy so quick
he can out-draw his own shadow.
Afterwards, beeline back to Boulevard
de Berlaimont and head towards Gare
de Bruxelles-Central. To the west of
the station, at 116 Rue du Marche aux
Herbes, the statute of a Smurf sitting
astride a mushroom welcomes you to
MOOF (moofmuseum.be) where hundreds of characters strike a pose in 3D.
Outside, follow the din coming from
the Grand Place and cruise into Rue de
IEtuve for a showstopper of a mural. On
the side of a building near the junction
with Rue de Lombard, Tintin and Captain
Haddock can be seen charging down a
re escape, a sight that draws as many
gasps as the nearby Manneken Pis statue.
Its perhaps the most striking mural
among several in town featuring Hergs
celebrated coiffed adventurer, including
a 20ft painting of Tintin hanging on to
the front of a train at Bruxelles-Midi
station and a long line-up of characters
at the Stockel Metro stop.
As your tour de comics comes to an
end, cycle down
Rue des Alexiens

There, surrounded
by comic panels,
you can dine out with Brussels most
colourful characters.

Fast forward a decade-and-a-half,

impressive list of national and European
accolades including a gold medal
from the European Athletics Indoor

clearing an immense 6.98m. In doing so,
the reigning champion broke her own
national record to scoop rst place and
claim her rst title as a senior.
I live and train

Knowing that Serbians watch and support me makes me feel even prouder.

By the time she had stood up, and dusted

it was a gamble that paid off in spades.
Ivanovic later went on to win the bronze.
I was going through serious health
problems leading up to the championships, she says. That changed my life. I
cannot imagine how I would feel today if
I had made the decision to not compete.
This season, the Zrenjanin-born star

First, she is competing Europe-wide at a
series of IAAF Diamond League events,
the pinnacle of calendar athletics,
before striving for glory at the World
Championships in Beijing this August.
My dream is to jump more than seven
metres, she says. And I know I can do
it. The main thing is that I work hard to
improve my long jump performance. If I
can do that, then the results and medals
will denitely follow.

COLOGNE

The real Willy Wonka

As Haribo nears its 100-year birthday, we measure the
inf luence of the gummy sweet that royals, artists and
quantum physicists swear by

aribo may be full of youthful cheer

and promise, but its so much
older than you think. The Bonn-based
sweets company is fast approaching its
centenary. And yet Haribos popularity
remains timeless but why?
Theres the taste of those gummy
bears, for one thing - 100 million are
produced per day worldwide. Theres
also the fact that the candy empire
keeps us on our toes with new launches
and stunts. The Gummy Bear Song
(recorded in 25 languages) has been
viewed an eye-popping 550 million times
on YouTube, while, last year, Haribo
UK teamed up with Universal Pictures
to launch Haribo Minions based on
the popular yellow characters from the

Despicable Me movies. This June,

a new batch of the luminous sweets hits
the shops in time for the release of the
new Minions lm.
Meanwhile, new gummy candies have
just been released in Germany, including
Waldgesister soft-jellies with special
flavours such as woodruff (a rare, herbal
plant) and bubble-gum inspired Bubble
Balloons. And whats clear is that 95
years on, the candy innovator still influences everything from politics to art.
Turn over to nd out everything you

This is just an everyday feeling for the divers who
make a living from the man-made riches off the coast

happen underwater. And whats really

getting the community talking is the fleet
of ships that have disappeared below the
surface in the past 12 months. Unlike the
172m-long MS Zenobia (a stadium-sized
ferry that sank off Larnaca in 1980),
these boats have been sunk on purpose.
This is the work of the 1.5 million
Cyprus Articial Reef programme,
an ambitious government-sponsored
scheme co-funded by the European
Union and European Fisheries Fund,
that is focused on a more sustainable
future for the islands ocean inhabitants.
Cyprus is already on the scuba-diving

radar thanks to Zenobia and a long

summer diving season in excess of
60,000 divers a year come to explore
their mysteries. But in reality, what
they nd below the surface is few sh
or marine life. Its an ocean-sized
problem to have, but this project
now offers a sign of hope.
What the programme has done is
create ve shing-free Marine Protected
Areas, where they have sunk a number
of boats to provide refuge for marine life.
Through years of research, the worlds
best marine biologists have found that
shipwrecks act as alternative reef

systems, creating tailor-made habitats

for sh to breed and flourish in lieu
of coral organisms. Within the ships
skeletons, a living cargo is born.
The rst vessel to go down was
Nemesis III, a 25m-long French bottom
trawler built in 1956 and sunk off the
coast of Protaras on the islands east
coast. Now resting at 23m below the
surface, the vessel has already been
a hit with divers from Ayia Napa.
It was only a short time before three
more boats were sent to an early watery
grave. The Soviet-built Costandis, a
24m-long trawler built in 1989, came

ITS BETTER, DOWN WHERE ITS WETTER

Should the Cyprus Articial Reef initiative
be a success, the waters off the coasts of
Ayia Napa, Larnaca and Limassol could
be home to a far greater diversity of life

next, before the Lady Thetis, a German

vessel from the 1950s had the plug pulled
on it. Both were sunk off the coast of
Limassol, with holes cut in each wreck
to ease diver access. The most recent,
the Kyrenia, a disused naval vessel, was
scuttled off Ayia Napa in February.
With news that the Cyprus Articial
Reef programme plans to sink even more
wrecks, it seems there is reason to be
optimistic. It may be dark in the depths
below, but life is looking brighter.

BUDAPEST

The Spa island

Budapest has its fair share of bathhouses - but come summer
another sanctuary is the citys wrinkly-toed champion
ummer in the city can be piping hot,
and there will be times when one of
Budapests steam-lled thermal baths
will not seem attractive to tourists.
Fortunately, theres a solution, in the
form of a piece of water-surrounded land
which is almost like going to the seaside.
Except it is in the middle of town. That
piece of land is Margaret Island, situated
in the middle of the Danube, just north of
the city centre.
A green lung in the heart of the city,
it has long been a place of recreation: a
specially rubber-surfaced running track
loops all the way around its perimeter,
and four-wheeled bringo hinto hireable

bike-carts wait at entrances for anyone

who wants to explore.
What explorers will nd is an open
air theatre, a couple of spa hotels and a
musical fountain. Theres even a little
zoo with birds of prey, storks, ponies
and cute, weird, fluffy chickens.
But the big attraction for summertime sunshine seekers are the two sets
of baths. The Hajos Alfred Sport Pools
(mnsk.hu) are primarily for serious
swimmers. Two of the four pools are
proper Olympic-size, 50-metre establishments with lanes. For tourists, the bigger
appeal is the Palatinus Baths (palatinusstrand.hu), about half way up the

island on the Buda side. In keeping with

the rest of Budapests spa vibe, some of
the water here is thermal. There are also
childrens pools with proper big slides,
and a huge wave pool where teenagers
gather with surf boards. The leisure
pools have neck massages, Jacuzzi jets
and river rapids.
Overall, theres enough space for everyone, so that you can either nd peace and
quiet or show off your wave-surng skills.
Who would have thought that you could
do that right in the heart of Budapest?

WROCLAW

The return of
Marilyn Monroe
The most famous movie star in history is back but this time in an unlikely Polish location
arilyn Monroe, the peripatetic star who lived in 43 different
places in her lifetime and whose picture has been splashed
around the world, now has yet another place to call home: Wroclaw,
Poland. Or her images do, at least.
Wroclaw won the lot of more than 3,000 images by celebrity photographer Milton H. Greene in an auction last year. An exhibition of

these photographs, called Good Day,

Marilyn, opens in July at Centennial Hall,
following a preview of 57 shots that went
on display to critics in April. Although
the images also feature other celebrities,
including Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn
and Marlon Brando, the majority focus
on Greenes muse, Monroe.
Yet these images arent just of movie
star Marilyn. What makes Greenes work
and the collection special, say critics,
is that the close nature of their friendship meant that she trusted him enough
to let her guard down. As a result, while
there are plenty of iconic images (like the
Ballerina Sitting shot of the star in a tulle
skirt, flirting with the camera), they also
show her in vulnerable, private moments.
Greene, a renowned Harpers Bazaar
and Vogue photographer,
met Monroe on a photo
shoot in 1953. The two
quickly became friends,
forming a production
company together, and
Monroe often stayed with
Greene at his house. When
the photographer died
in 1985, his estate was purchased by a
Chicago investor who was later accused
of embezzlement from Poland - the
country obtained the photos as part of
the settlement. In a nal twist, they were
auctioned off with the agreement that the
images would remain in Poland.
Wroclaws winning bid was 1.6
million. Although it was the largest bid
for a lot of images ever sold at auction in
Poland, if the photographs had gone to
public auction to an international bidder,
they could have received three times that.
The hope is that the images will help
the city attract more visitors a process
already aided by Wroclaws serving as
a European capital of culture for 2016.
Cementing this position, Wroclaw is
also opening Polands rst photography museum next year. These shots, of
course, will be the centrepiece.

If you go down to the Hoia-Baciu woods

But now the forest is being opened up

LUCRETIA GRIGORE
AND JEROME BRIOIS
Bucharest, Romania and Lille, France
Our journey together rst started
three years ago. That was when my
husband Jerome and I met for the rst
time at Brussels Charleroi Airport. Even
though the distance between France and
Romania is nearly 4,000km, we felt this
wouldnt be a problem.
With the help of Wizz Air, everything
was possible. Through those two years
and 55 days, we flew almost 69,000km
- approximately 4,950 minutes of flying
to see each other on opposite sides of
Europe. After two years of intense travel,
we married in France last June, inviting
all my Romanian friends to fly to join us.
It wasnt what you would call a normal
wedding. We had a Wizz Air theme and
decorated the whole reception, menus,
guests cards, and lights in bright pink
and purple - even my wedding dress
matched the theme. This July, we plan to
hold another ceremony in Romania - and
this time everyone will fly from France
with Wizz Air.

by doing design work for them. Since then, through WIZZ,
I have become a couch surfer and have had the pleasure of
meeting so many interesting characters that I wont forget in
a hurry. Because of this, when I visit someone I always cook
them traditional Polish pierogi as a thank you - my most
recent trip was to Lisbon and the host said they were the best
they had ever tasted. My trips have now inspired me to start
my own travel blog, whereisadi.wordpress.com. I love interviewing new friends and documenting their stories, but its
still new, so Ive promised myself to work on it more!

RUDOLF GONDA
Budapest, Hungary
As a scuba diver I like to travel to destinations where
I can holiday underwater. In the past few years, Wizz
Air has taken me to see the Blue Hole in Malta, the
deepest diving pool in Brussels, and a marine park close
to Rome. But the best trip was to see the legendary MS
Zenobia wreck in Cyprus. When we were underwater,
I wanted to show my friends back in Hungary how great
the diving was, so I took a photo of my friend Klara
Gergely as she posed, weightless above the wreck.
Next year our friends joined us when we went back
for a second time because they were so jealous!

One cold Friday evening last
autumn, I felt I needed a change:
I wanted to relax, to recover and to
nd some inspiration - so I bought
last-minute tickets to Sicily. This
photo of Irina was taken at the
Silvestri Craters at the top of Mount

below us and it was a magic atmosphere. At that moment, nothing
could stop us from trying to fly.

A year ago my boyfriend Martin was graduating from university and I wanted to give him a special gift for all his hard work.
I thought a trip to Dubai would be the ultimate reward. There
were no airlines operating to the UAE from Slovakia at the time
and the price to fly via Vienna was extremely high. But when
I started to dig a little deeper, I found that Wizz Air offered
flights via Budapest - I booked the tickets immediately. After
a few days I couldnt keep my secret from him anymore. If you
could only have seen the happiness in his eyes when I told him.
Wizz Air made me convinced that it does not matter who you
are or where you live if you want to, you can go anywhere.

Tel Aviv, Israel

My wife had to travel to Amsterdam for a week for work, and
left me at home with my eight-year-old daughter and 12-yearold son. The children really missed their Mum. Spontaneously,
I decided that Id book a last-minute trip for the weekend. In
no time, a trip to Soa was booked and when they were asleep
I packed their luggage. Early the next morning, I woke the kids
and surprised them. It was perfect: the weather was great, we
went to the zoo and enjoyed delicious food. When we were on
Vitosha Boulevard, I looked at my daughter, and noticed she
was wearing a purple and pink outt similar to the Wizz Air
colours. I knew itd be the perfect reminder of the trip.

ANCA CERNAT

MADALINA-MARIA LUTAS

Bucharest, Romania
My most memorable Wizz Air experience was when
I was with my husband and three daughters in Coral
Bay in Cyprus. We visited Lara Beach, Aphrodites
Rock, the Adonis Baths, Paphos and Limassol Zoos,
Ayia Napa - so many places. One afternoon we were
walking above the beach and the sleeves on the blouse
my daughter Sabina was wearing started to spread like
wings. She cried out to me, Look, Mum, Im flying!
It was an emotional moment because she was wearing a traditional Romanian blouse inherited from her
great-grandmother. It really underlined the importance
of our family time together.

Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Ive visited so many beautiful places in Europe with Wizz Air: Paris
a city of romance - Rome, Bergamo, Munich and Barcelona. I love
Barcelona because its full of energy and happiness - and my favourite
spot is in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Every time I travel I feel free like
I am flying. Last year, I gave my parents the greatest gift possible for
their 25th wedding anniversary - a trip to Paris.

VALLETTA
What better way to start a visit to Malta than standing high atop
the bastion walls of Valletta with views of the Grand Harbour. This
stretch of deep blue sea is the driver of Maltas remarkable history.
Anyone craving power in the Mediterranean has longed for this
superb natural harbour, so Malta has been courted and conquered
by everyone from the Phoenicians to the British, who accepted
the surrender of the Italian fleet to the Allies at the end of Maltas
second great siege in 1942. The rst siege came in the time of the
Knights of Malta. The Knights defended the island against the vast
forces of the Ottoman Turks. The Knights just held on and their
victory resulted in the building of their new capital Valletta.
Descend to sea level for a boat trip around the harbour and you
swap the defenders-eye view for that of the potential invader (try
captainmorgan.com.mt or luzzucruises.com). Youll soon see why
Valletta went unmolested for 200 years.

MDINA
The traditional limestone palazzi of Maltas
noble families flank the tiny alleys of Mdina,
cheek-by-jowl with churches, shrines and
convents. In its commanding position on
a natural plateau at the centre of the main
island, Maltas rst capital, maze-like within
imposing fortications, is a perfect place
to wander, gently sightsee and enjoy a
peaceful meal at the family-run Ciappetti
(ciappetti.com). By day the southern sun
glows off the honeyed stone walls, colourful
little horse-drawn cabs trot by, and
museums and churches welcome visitors.
Stay on for the evening at the Xara Palace
(xarapalace.com.mt) and, almost alone,
you can walk the atmospheric alleyways of
The Silent City.

THE BLUE LAGOON

Maltas most popular swimming
spot, the Blue Lagoon, is a gorgeous
protected stretch of sea between the
tiny island of Comino (permanent
population: four) and the rocky islet of
Cominotto. Perfectly blue over bright
white sand, or translucent over sea
plants ideal for snorkelling, there is
always plenty of space in the water even
if the narrow shorelines are crowded with
people. There is one hotel on Comino,
otherwise everyone arrives by day-boat
from Malta or Gozo.

MELLIEHA BAY
For a small country, Malta has a remarkable presence in lm. Most
recently Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were here lming their new movie
By The Sea, due for release later this year. They also honeymooned here,
too. Game of Thrones used several Maltese locations including the main
gate to Mdina (Kings Landing Gate) and Gozos iconic Azure Window
(backdrop to Daenerys and Khal Drogos wedding). Troy features
Mellieha and the Blue Lagoon, Russell Crowe fought in the defensive
ditch of Vittoriosa in Gladiator, while Comino Tower became Chateau
dIf in The Count of Monte Cristo, most of which was shot in Malta.
Dropping the target age a bit, you can still visit the bright, zany, weirdlyangled streets of Robert Altmans Sweethaven (Popeye, 1980). The set
in is now a mini-theme park for kids (popeyemalta.com).

MARSAXLOKK
An island-nation in the middle of
the Mediterranean, Malta unsurprisingly
has a shing culture and Marsaxlokk is
its traditional centre. Brightly painted
wooden boats hark back to Phoenician
times, the eye of Osiris painted on the
prow to ward off evil. The long harbourfront here hosts the early morning sh
market followed by a tourist market,
especially large on Sundays. And the
harbour is backed by a long row of
restaurants, most of which specialise,
appropriately, in fresh sh. Many
have seats outside on sunny days
which is most days in Malta.

You may not know it,

but the worlds most
famous 20th century
artist had little-known
Slovakian roots...
m driving through a quiet, obscure
part of the Slovak countryside, and
bright sunlight is cutting through the
morning mist. In this environment youd
expect to see certain things: elds and
forests, roadside shrines and churches.
What you wouldnt expect is a bus stop
in the shape of a Campbells soup can.
Look over to the other side of the
roadside and youll see a hotel called
Penzion Andy. The Andy in question is
Andy Warhol. Or to use his original name,
Andrej Varchola Jr. The artists parents
lived in the small village of Medzilaborce
before moving to Pittsburgh in the early
20th century and the unexpected building
behind the bus stop is the Andy Warhol
Museum of Modern Art (warholcity.com).
Opened in 1991, it displays 160 of
Warhols original works, making it the
second largest collection of his art in the
world. Medzilaborce has a population
of 7,000. Thats 40 times less than in
Warhols native Pittsburgh and a 1,000
times less than the population of New
York, where Warhol spent most of his life.
After breakfast at Penzion Andy (no
Campbells soup on the menu), I visit
the museum, which combines both
well-known and more surprising works.
Warhol was fascinated by people who had
power and influence, whether that was
political or came through their talent or
beauty. In the gallery there are images
of Ted Kennedy, Chairman Mao, Jackie
Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, and many
more. Some of the art is particularly
appropriate to Slovakias history, too.
The Red Lenin portrait (and a hammer
and sickle print) are a reminder of its
communist past. Theres also a series
of portraits of Jews of the 20th century,
including Einstein and Franz Kafka.

SIGN OF HIS TIMES

other museum, down the
road from the village where
the artists parents were born
(above); a replica of Warhols
famous Campbells soup tin,
now a bus shelter (left)

One of Warhols most lasting influences

was to change what we consider art.
His method of taking screen printing
from the commercial world into ne
art meant that his images could be
reproduced many times and in different
colours (it wasnt for nothing that he
called his studio The Factory).
This interest in mass-produced objects
is perhaps best encapsulated by his
images of Campbells soup cans, and
the museum has some of these prints
on display as well as a couple of real
Campbells tins. One, signed by Warhol,
is in immaculate condition. The other
is somewhat the worse for wear it
was retrieved in a battered state from a
building site in a nearby village.
Although Warhol said he came from
nowhere and he certainly never
visited Slovakia the gallery has an
exhibition that helps us build up a picture
of his familys humble origins. There
are family photos on display, including
one of Warhols father on a Pittsburgh
building site, and a picture of a smiling
Grandpa Bezek a
local relative who helped
clear up a lot of questions
about the artists origins.
Touchingly, theres also
a newspaper cutting she
kept about one of her
sons exhibitions.
You can also see the
artists sunglasses, suit
jacket, and Walkman,
plus theres also the
correspondence that led
to the museums opening.
The contribution of
Warhols brother, John
Warhola, who was vice
president of the Andy Warhol Foundation
for the Visual Arts in New York, was vital.
Seeing Warhols work and his familys
origins side by side highlights the gulf
between the two worlds Medzilaborce
is a long way from New York. Indeed, its
a long way from Bratislava, and even a
couple of hours from Kosice, the nearest
city. But this remote location helps us

understand and appreciate the distance

that the Warhola family travelled in
the space of just one generation. That
contrast surely gave Warhol an intriguing
perspective on American culture.
The museums location also helps
visitors make the link between Warhols
art and the region. The Warholas
were Rusyns, a people related to the
Ukrainians. The beautiful, small wooden
churches dotted around the area
demonstrate how important decorative
arts were to their culture. The buildings
are rustic yet perfectly formed, with
something of the fairy-tale about them,
and religious artwork inside, much of it
depicting of saints on religious icons.
Still, the Warhol
museum isnt the only
collection of the artists
works in the area. In
Kosice, the Mihal gallery
(mihalgallery.sk) has
23 original Warhols on
display. Its situation,
over the road from an
out-of-town shopping
centre, feels somehow
appropriate. The building
is boldly painted and
theres a gure of Andy
Warhol sitting on the roof outside.
Inside, many of the images have religious
themes, including some of Saint
Apollonia (patron saint of dentists).
Perhaps then its in more than one
sense that Warhols images are iconic.
But before we get too carried away with
nding a deeper meaning, we should
remember that Warhol once said that he
painted Campbells soup because its what
he had for lunch every day for 20 years.
So there we have it. Andy Warhol an
era-dening artist who commented on
our culture of consumerism and celebrity
originally came from a tiny village in an
obscure part of Slovakia. But he was also
just a guy who really liked soup.

The building is boldly

painted and theres a

theatre on offer, theres
plenty to draw the bearded,
annelled, and those with
progressive hairstyles.

Sziget
Pop acts are dominant,
so expect the island to be
rammed with whooping
students and ravers. The
hipsters of Hungary will be
back in town, writing poetry
in cafs on the Danube.

Exit
With its head freshly thrust
into its MacBooks Rave

increasingly hipster-friendly.
Pop crooner John
Newmans organic dance
will bring out the Serbian

Orange Warsaw
Hipsters are notoriously
stadium-averse, preferring
to watch gigs in tattoo
parlours and whole food
stores. Expect few to be
seen dead here.

EXIT
9-12 JULY, BELGRADE
One of the most beautiful festivals in Europe,
Exit is held in the Petrovaradin fortress in Novi
Sad, a walled fort where festival-goers wander
between stages in paved squares and over drawbridges.
It began life as an anti-Milosevic student protest in the
summer of 2000 with the slogan exit out of ten years of madness.
With Milosevic duly dispatched, its now grown into one of Europes
most-respected and politically-charged festivals with a vast array of
styles and scenes represented over three different events in 2014.
Who to see: The likes of Emile Sand, Clean Bandit and Faithless share
poster space with Motrhead, Fear Factory and gulp! - Thundersteel.
Poor Tom Odell, you suspect, will get eaten alive. exitfest.org

OPENER 1-4 JULY,

GDANSK
Held at the Baby Doly Military Airport outside Gdynia, Opener can be a daunting
prospect. The treks between its three main stages are like epic polar missions,
but discover Openers back passage of lively bars and archway hang-outs and
youll stumble across the silent discos, art happenings and inspired local cuisine
that have won it the Best Major Festival award twice (in 2009 and 2010).
Who to see: It takes its high-art slant seriously, with theatre stages and cultural
exhibits, but as the music starts late, the chaos consumes all. The Libertines and
Kasabian will no doubt bring the party. opener.pl

Exit
The combination of
hardcore thrash legends and
pounding electro pioneers
may well complete the
demolition of Novi Sad
that the Turkish invasions of
1694 and 1716 failed
to nish.

Orange Warsaw
Stadiums in major cities
have strict volume limits,
but you can expect space
rock titans Muse, electro
warfarers The Chemical
Brothers and the dozens of
metal acts called things like
Afromental and Carrion to
push them well into the red.

OFF
Two bands sum up how
heavy OFF can get. American rockers Sunn O))) claim
their take on drone metal
is a fullment of the apocalypse, while Denmarks
Selvhenter, will rain down
such punishment that youll
forget your own name.
Stand several miles

ORANGE WARSAW FESTIVAL
12-14 JUNE, WARSAW
A relative newcomer to the Eastern European
festival circuit, Orange Warsaw has grown
to become a major player, nabbing Kasabian,
Florence & The Machine and Kings Of Leon last
year. A stadium-based event with two main stages,
it lacks some of the more offbeat attractions of more
established festivals, but has begun to incorporate a club run by the
Rochstar Crew and a Festival City full of stalls selling everything from
high-end tech gadgets to home-made jewellery.
Who to see: Muse, The Chemical Brothers and Noel Gallaghers High
Flying Birds alongside a cornucopia of hard rock and experimental
pop acts. orangewarsawfestival.pl

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

Orange Warsaw has fast
become a major player on
the festival circuit (above);
Florence & The Machine
was one of the big hitters at
the festival in 2014 (below)

Opener
Opener is sponsored
by Heineken, so
youre not allowed to
bring alcohol into the vast
main arena. This means
that the gaps between
bands are a stampede
to the drinking area that
sees the stages instantly
deserted and the bars
rammed with beer-starved
Poles necking buckets
of industrial lager.

Sziget
Its authentic Ruin Pubs
Quarter and its legendary
Sky Bar literally a bar
pulled up above the site on
a crane, staffed by a pirate makes it undoubtedly
one of the drunkest
festivals on the planet.

Exit
With cheap local beer and
the music running until 8am
each night, whenever Exit
festival-goers arent sleeping, theyre drinking. Keep
an eye out for the spirit bar
in the hotel by the reggae
stage rocket-fuel shots in
Serbia reach 75ml.

OFF
OFF caters to rened
music fans: they sip real ale
cocktails out of jam jars,
while getting tattoos at the
on-site tattooists.

Over its two days, 110,000
festival-goers attend. Thats
a lot of empty beer cups.

Most of the headliners

with Mumford & Sons

youre likely to spot
some nifty faux banjo.

Your best chance for a bit

is in front of the Tribute
Stage where the audience
can re-live the best guitar
solos in history. Or take
a puppet and see if you
can make it keep up with

Exit
We alert all wannabe

of Napalm Death, whose
frenzied fretwork is the
instrument-free headbangers wildest dream.

Orange Warsaw

youll see here is the

A fantasy island in the middle of the Danube, Sziget casts itself as an Island
Of Freedom, drawing boatloads of hedonistic hippy types and wild party kids.
Mock-ups of traditional Hungarian villages rub shoulders with fairy-lit forest
discos, zip-wire rides and wood-shack markets serving hearty Hungarian fare,
while the bigger names on the festival circuit wow huge main stage crowds.
Who to see: A shift from big indie rock names and retro acts towards mainstream
pop turns this year (Robbie Williams, Florence & The Machine, Ellie Goulding)
gives Sziget a radio-friendly air. Dont forget your whistles and face paint.

WILDEST
MOSH-PITS
Opener
Last year, the crowd
at the Alter Space stage
actually broke the tent to
Royal Blood by moshing
their way clean through the
oor. Gdynia parties
hard, and with The Prodigy
heading the bill, expect
tectonic movement.

Sziget
Its easier to mosh to
whale-song than Florence
& The Machine, but come
Avicii and Limp Bizkits
sets, youll worry the island
might sink from all
the bouncing.

Exit
Yes itll be loud, but
raucous? The Motrhead
and Napalm Death fans
would probably put
their backs out if they
moshed as hard as they
used to, and the likes
of Clean Bandit and
Faithless inspire more
of a gentle wobble.

OFF
If youre moshing,
you are certainly
not appreciating.

OFF FESTIVAL
7-9 AUGUST, KATOWICE
OFF favours the esoteric and alternative. Starting life in 2006 as a local alt-rock event
to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of WWII, it swiftly became an essential date
on the artsy rock calendar, where the likes of The National and My Bloody Valentine,
have aired their indie-god wares. Now resident of the picturesque Dolina Trzech Stawow
(The Valley Of Three Ponds), its the ultimate see-it-here-rst party.
Who to see: Fem-folk heroin Patti Smith performs her acclaimed Horses album in full,
with Ride, Run The Jewels and Young Fathers adding further cult credentials.

icture the scene. Its lunchtime in

the Latvian capital and at one of the
citys trendiest bars a member of the
Brothers of the Wind motorbike club
is greedily working his way through a
slice of strawberry cake. Wolng it down
in seconds, he gets up, stretches, and
strides over to an incongruously placed
barber chair in the corner for a haircut.
Picture another. At a restaurant down
the road, a waitress slaloms between
tables before serving up a plate of frog
legs that, she says, includes several secret
ingredients the chef is taking to his grave.
A few hours from now, waiters at a posh
eatery nearby will roll out a huge brown
container and, with great ceremony,
reveal 14 different types of chocolate as a
small jewellery box ballerina twirls in the
middle of the sweet treats. In Riga, food
often comes with a side of surprise.
Whether its car seats for bar stools,
mountain ash with your pork breast, or

a restaurant among the clouds, theres a

playful, inventive approach to dining here
thats increasingly luring foodies to the
Paris of the Baltics. Take a culinary stroll
through Riga and the sense of excitement
among chefs and diners is palpable. In
fact, theres a belief that the food scene,
stagnant during Latvias time under Soviet
rule, is evolving at a killer pace.
The Soviet era destroyed a lot in this
city, says Martins Ritins, Latvias most
celebrated chef and the brains behind
Vincents (restorans.lv). Twenty years
ago the staple cuisine was Russian, but
things have started to change and there
are plenty of young chefs with fresh ideas
making their mark in the city.
One such rising star is Walter Gee
whose booked-out restaurant Valtera
(valterarestorans.lv) only uses produce
from local farms and sets its menu
according to when the hunting or shing
season starts. Dishes like rabbit quince

and fried herring rye bread are served not

on plates, but Latvian wood, ceramic and
other natural materials.
Our food began to change signicantly
in the early 1990s when we became
independent and there was the possibility
to travel around, says Gee. Thats how
ideas, experience and foreign cuisine
flowed into the country. Now our leading
chefs are using that information to create
new dishes, creating a new version of
Latvian cuisine.
There is certainly enough variety in
Riga to keep the most discerning foodie
happy. And if dining at cutting-edge
places like Valtera or Vincents isnt
your thing, you can always drop by the
ever-increasing number of cake shops,
pubs, hotel bars, jazz clubs or tea-rooms.
Rigas restaurants have a new-found
creativity that leaves you wanting more.
Turn over for our pick of where to dine
out on your next trip.

VEST
Vest is peculiar. On one hand its a fashionable, industrial-designed restaurant
where men with hipster beards nibble
on pasta and sip craft beer. On the other,
its a biker bar, a hangout for leather-clad
Brothers (and Sisters) of the Wind,
ravenous after their Sunday breakfast
run. Its also a live music venue where,
on a small stage at the entrance, rock
bands pump out face-melting tracks.
Most unusually, though, its a barbershop
where a tattooed trio clip and style from
behind salon stools in a corner. The food
flying out of the kitchen swordsh
with chickpeas, pork roast with stewed
cabbage - is worth the racket and razorbuzz, but its the selection of homemade
cakes (washed down with the best coffee
in town) that really hits the spot.

VINCENTS
Many restaurants have a photo or two of some
famous faces who once dropped by for a meal.
Vincents has dozens, enough to cover two walls on
the way into the main dining area. Angela Merkel,
Prince Charles, Elton John, David Cameron the list
of prominent gures fed by celebrity chef Martins
Ritins goes on and on. The British-born Latvian
serves up dishes like yellown tuna tartar on ice
and foie gras ravioli, while meals are capped off by
the Pandoras Box, a cavity-causing container lled
with chocolate. And the most memorable VIP, he has
cooked for? George W Bush, apparently. Ritins says
his Texan charm was world-beating.

If youre wild about doughnuts

CRAZY DONUTS
If pop artist Andy Warhol had ever
opened a bakery, then it would probably
have looked something like this eyepopping downtown caf. Here manager
Kristine Sondore produces Willy Wonkastyle donuts decorated in all manner
of dizzying designs and colours (her
latest obsession is animated icons the
Minions). Everything is so colourful and
bright, in fact - from the rainbow seats
and paintings to the takeaway containers that you understand why the cafs
mascot is an over-sized doughnut with
sunglasses. The names of the treats
are suggestive - Pistachio Tenderness,
Melons Puznis or Peach Rain anyone?
but the vibe is wholesome, sweet and
about as much fun as two Minions
ghting over a banana.

FLYING FROG
Not since a plague hit Egypt have so many frogs congregated in one
place. Flying Frog has the green amphibians everywhere on the walls,
on the tables, on the staff s clothing and, most importantly, on the
menu. Its gimmicky and a world removed from Rigas slicker eateries,
but the service is so friendly and the food such good value (cheap
burgers, cheaper pastas) that you cant help but be swept along. To
enjoy the full experience order the frog legs, served with oyster sauce
and paprika. Bluegrass music blares from speakers, adding another
strange element to what is Rigas barmiest restaurant.

crowd to the venue on the 26th floor: the

visit. As it happens, the chef s reach for
the skies, too, serving an elegant brunch

two other superb restaurants on the ground

LOOK EAST
Puawy offers a fabulous combination of history, beauty and business opportunity
Looking for a comfortable place to live,
work and play? Make sure you check
out Puawy, where a storied history is
intertwined with a modern approach to
business and science. Plus, all this sits
among the beautiful landscapes along the
Vistula River, ranging from natural forests
to delightful urban spaces.
Get to know Puawy
Puawy has been one of eastern Polands
most important cultural and economic
centres since the 18th century, and is best
known as the cradle of Polish museums and
the countrys scientific thought. Now home
to nearly 50,000 people, it maintains this
unique identity to this day.

Alongside this, the city has fostered an

attractive environment for investment,
with care taken to establish suitable
facilities and incentives for entrepreneurs
and support institutions. For example,
the Puawy Science and Technology Park
was set up to drive economic development
in the city through closer cooperation
between its science and business
communities. Important research here
includes how renewable raw materials can
be used in manufacturing packaging.
Tourism hotspot
A variety of visitor attractions add to
Puawys investment appeal. The city
is regarded as one of the most green

urban areas in Poland, while Kazimierz

Landscape Park, with its network of
loess gorges, offers picturesque scenery
and opportunities for active recreation.
Add to this the low population density,
clean air and numerous fine architectural
monuments, and you find a community
with plenty in its favour with regards to
tourism development.
These same advantages hold true no
matter where your investment may lie;
the natural beauty and business climate
of Puawy makes it a fantastic place to
combine both family life and a career.

Smart home systems are on the rise

and this version from Somfy is cutting-edge.
The management system allows you to
control your entire property, including the
blinds, gates, lights and much more, easily
from your smartphone or tablet. It also lets
you keep an eye on your home, and who
comes and goes, while you're away. The
control unit, called TaHoma, ensures your
home is a fortress of security.
Your unit can also be used in the case of a
fire. By linking it to your smoke detector, the
unit will send a signal to your smartphone
so that even if you're out of the house, you
can alert fire services and open your gates
to let them in. Connect your unit to your
lights and energy sources and it will help you
reduce your energy bills, making you huge
savings. "Installing external roller shutters
can give you a real, measurable saving," says
Radoslaw Borkowski, managing director
at Somfy. "They work by forming an airbag
between the blind and the glass, which
cools a room in summer and prevents heat
loss in winter. The best way to effectively
use the blinds is to combine them with the
appropriate sensors, such as temperature
sensors and sunlight." Managing your home
has never been easier! For more info visit

A HAIR-RAISING EVENT
Sieradz, in central Poland, pays homage to the hairdresser Antoni Cierplikowski with its annual festival
The worlds first celebrity hairdresser,
Antoni Cierplikowski, was no ordinary barber,
and Sieradz, where he came from, is no
ordinary town. This summer, from 17-19 July,
the town plays host to a (literally) hair-raising
event, inspired by the work of the famous
hairdresser: the Open Hair Festival.
Mayor Pawe Osiewaa says, Antoni urged
women to change their hair colours, so this years festival will do
the same the slogan is Lets colour.
Antoni Cierplikowski became the worlds first celebrity
hairdresser to icons such as Brigitte Bardot, Edith Piaf,
Greta Garbo and Pola Negri when he left Sieradz to set up his salon,
Antoine de Paris, in Paris. His work transformed womens images
by freeing them from long hair, and soon his hairstyles became
dizzyingly popular. In 1909, Cierplikowski invented the tomboy
hairstyle for actress ve Lavalliere and the association still stands
today. Even Eleanor Roosevelt politely waited in line for the style.
During his life he worked in Paris, London and New York,
and achieved remarkable success. He had influence over many
important events, including the coronation of King George VI,

Gmina Miasto Sieradz.indd 12

where he led the hairdressing team that catered to 400 women.

In 2009, on the hundredth anniversary of his famous tomboy
haircut, Sieradz inaugurated the Festival of Open Hair in his
honour. For the past six years, each July, the town has transformed
into an unusual hairdressing salon. For four of those years it has
managed to hold the world record for the highest number of people
undergoing simultaneous hairstyling in the Old Town Square.
Accompanying the festival are workshops in make-up,
photography and dance. This year, the seventh edition, features
a music concert with a performance by Maryla Rodowicz.
For three days the city will be overrun with music, dance and
art. On stage, participants in the festival will take part in hair
transformations and fashion makeovers all overseen by Polish
music manager Maja Sablewska. The festival promises fun for the
whole family and youll even get the opportunity to style each other
and take notes on the crazy hairstyles youll see everywhere!

Galicia Jewish Museum

In 2004, British photojournalist Chris Schwarz established
the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow. The unique institution
was created to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust,
celebrate the richness of Jewish history and culture, and to
take part in the revival of Jewish life in present day Poland.
In its ten years it has become one of Polands most
important Jewish cultural institutions. Through exhibitions,
cultural events, and an educational outreach and community
programme, it hopes to educate both Poles and Jews about
their histories while encouraging them to think about the
future. The museums permanent exhibitions include: Traces
of Memory: Contemporary Look at the Jewish Past in Poland,
and Unfinished Memory: Jewish Heritage and the Holocaust
in Eastern Galicia. It also houses temporary exhibitions,
an education room with a media resource centre and film
archive, as well as a caf and Jewish bookstore. In 2013 it was
ranked in the top three of Krakow museums by TripAdvisor,
and in 2014, in the top ten in Poland.

Oswka Underground City

Hidden below the surface of the Owl Mountains in
Lower Silesia, youll find Oswka Underground
City, an enormous project built between 1943 and
1945 that remains home to many treasures of the
Third Reich and the dark secrets of World War II.
Prisoners captured by the Germans began work on
a huge system of labyrinths and bunkers in mid-1943
work that remained uncompleted when the area was
evacuated and taken over by Russian forces in February
1945. To date, no official documents related to the project
have been found, but different historians have theorised
that it could have been planned as a secret shelter for
Hitler, underground factories for parts of the V1 and
V2 rockets or a large laboratory for building an atomic
bomb. Some locals have reported that the retreating
German army even used it to hide shipments of gold.
Open all year round, the underground and
ground-level parts can be visited with tourist routes
led by English audio guides and guides speaking
other languages upon reservation.

Jakuby Fair
Each year people flock to the Jakuby Fair,
which straddles the border between Germany
and Poland. The twin event hosted by
the town Goerlitz on the German side, and
Zgorzelec on the Polish side features a rich,
artistic programme of celebrations, all of which
honour the regions history, as well as the
German theologian, Jakob Bhme, who the fair
is named after. Bhme, born in 1575 in Upper
Lusatia (now called Zgorzelec County),
was trained to be a shoemaker. However,
it was his theological writings that made him
a great thinker and an important name today.
The fair gathers together the residents of both
towns, offering relaxation, fun and a chance
to get together as one. This August (28-30
August) you can join the several dozen guests
from Germany that take advantage of the
cultural and culinary highlights of Jakuby,

that visit Goerlitz.

KUTAISI: THE BEST HOST

Some 3,500 years of history and modern infrastructure developments make
Kutaisi both a great holiday destination and a sound investment opporunity
MOTSAMETA CATHEDRAL

Dear Sir and Madam,

Welcome to the country
that represents the cradle
of ancient civilization.
Kutaisi was the capital
of Colchis 3,500 years ago, when it was known
as Aia. Here you will discover a blend of olden
and recent history, culture, traditions, unique
folklore and art that is represented as the
Golden Fleece in Greece mythology.
Nowadays, Kutaisi is not only the
administrative centre of Imereti region,
but also it is the centre and parliamentary
capital of Georgia. Imereti attracts visitors
attention with its landscapes, mountains,
forests, rivers, national parks, caves, historical
monuments, unique wine and cuisine, and its
fabulous hospitality. A wide network of hotels,
guesthouses, agrotourism farms, resorts,
Georgian restaurants and entertainment and
relaxation centres are waiting for you.
Travel to Georgia and its ancient region
of Imereti. You will never forget it.

Located among the Kolkheti lowlands,

between the southern Caucasus and the
Adjara-Imereti ranges, the region of Imereti
is one of the most beautiful parts of Georgia.
Its history dates back to ancient times;
back to 3,500 years ago when the powerful
Colchi kingdom boasted early cultural,
educational, political and military systems.
Jason and the Argonauts arrived here in
search of the Golden Fleece, and such
expeditions by the ancient Greeks provided
valuable data on old Georgian tribes and
their science, art and medicine. Excavations
have since uncovered stunning gold
jewellery, agricultural tools and weapons,
which are displayed in the archeological
museum in Vani.
There are more than 200 historical
monuments spread across the region,
including the Gelati Monastery and Bagrati
Cathedral, which are both recognised as
UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The region is also known for a remarkable
range of landscapes that span humid
subtropics and alpine meadows. An abundance
of mineral water springs has led to the

development of numerous health spas. The

local people are famous for their hospitality
and treat their guests to homemade wine and
delicious food during a traditional feasting
ceremony led by eloquent toastmasters.
Kutaisi
Then known as Aia, Kutaisi was the capital
of Colchi, which has given rise to a blend of
ancient and recent history, culture, traditions
and unique folklore represented as the

Today, Kutaisi is not only the
administrative centre of Imereti, but also
Georgias parliamentary city.
Bagrati Cathedral
Of all of Kutaisis numerous historical sites
and locations, Bagrati Cathedral ranks as
one of the most important monuments to
Georgian architecture, while the Gelati
Academy and the Geguti Palace are pearls of
feudal Georgias culture.
The magnificent cathedral towers over the
city. Built in the late 10th century by Bagrat

The city
Kutaisi is located in central-western
Georgia, on the Great Silk Road. Its the
administrative centre of the Imereti

parliamentary city and second capital

rapidly developing cities in the country,
with a population that continues to rise.

Great opportunities

SATAPLIA NATIONAL PARK

Kutaisi is located on the banks of the

River Rioni, which boasts the highest
water flow rate of any river in Georgia.
This makes it the perfect location for
powerful hydroelectric stations.
Over the past five years, the city
has received more than $600m in
investment from foreign sources.
Much of this can be ascribed to the
two free industrial zones in Kutaisi,
where an attractive investment climate
contributes to extensive large and
medium-business development.
In addition, the city is well-connected
to all of Georgias most important
strategic locations by a network of
roads and highways.

in a war against the Turks. But that has not
stopped visitors from being amazed by its
size and splendour. Many beautiful carved
stone fragments are scattered around the
building. The lavish facades and porticoes
demonstrate the wonderful achievements
of Georgian architecture in their stylised
depictions of flora and fauna. Reconstruction
works on Bagrati Cathedral were fully
completed in 2012.
Gelati Monastery
Consisting of three churches, the Gelati
Monastery lies 11km north-east of Kutaisi.
Its construction was started in 1106 by the
king, David the Builder, and completed by
his son and successor Dmitri. Famed for its
prestigious academy and library, its home
to a spectacular mosaic of the Virgin Mary,

GEORGIA:
A GUIDE TO FOOD
AND FEASTING
Food blogger Sally Prosser shares her pick of the best places
to feast, and the best things feast on, in Georgia
On my first day in Georgia, when I arrive at
Kala for lunch, a rustic little restaurant tucked
away in old Tbilisi, Im really hungry. This is
the last time I will feel that way for over a week.
At that first lunch we ordered all sorts of
dishes from the fabric-covered menu. Far
too much, in fact, as we got excited about the
different tastes, combinations of ingredients,
and unique flavours. Little did we know that
Georgians dont eat they feast at every meal.
Eating is taken very seriously and a supra
or feast will stretch on for hours and hours. A
tamada is appointed and is the toast master.
He will give heartfelt thanks for the food on
the table, the company and the occasion.
Mindfulness for Georgians is a way of life. The
toasts are not flippant but involve deep feeling
and thought. Its not about getting drunk,
although Georgians seem to have a great
capacity for drinking, but taking a thought or
a philosophical notion and expounding on it.
The supra and its ideals is not something thats
arranged for tourists, its part of Georgian
culture our guide Geo would not be able to let
us sit down for an evening meal without a few
words to help us savour the moment.
Georgians mythology says that a stranger
to your table might not be all they seem, so
guests are viewed as potential gods and treated
as such. I was a guest of The Georgian Wine
Agency for over a week and no god could have
received better treatment or more food. It
was a whirlwind of food, wine, polyphonic
singing, scenery contemplation, history and
Georgian lessons, and as I started writing
this up, new questions about the dishes and
ingredients kept arising. A great excuse to
return to find out more! Heres what we ate and
what you might encounter on a Georgian table.

National Wine Agency.indd 11

Khachapuri
There are at least 40 different variations on this
filled dough, often dictated by region. Usually
bread with sulguni cheese baked onto or inside
it, there are also bean and egg versions in many
shapes, while some are fried. Some are a bit
like fluffy pizza, some are buttery and flakier.
I had one from a street-side kiosk made with
hard-boiled egg and cheese. It was a cold day
and I grabbed it with both hands, demolished
every cheesy, fluffy mouthful quickly, and it
soon warmed me up. Khachapuri was served
at every single meal and often after several
courses, but now matter how full you get, you
can never resist a slice or two.
Khinkali
Georgias national dish is filled dumplings. To
eat them you hold the dumpling by the sides
or the top-knot and bite carefully, sucking the
savoury liquid out of the hole you have made.
You can then eat the whole thing (the top-knot
is often discarded). Strangely we are only
served them on two occasions: a comforting,
smoky potato-filled version with fried onions
at an incredible foraged feast, and the more
typical meat and gravy kind at Tabla.
Vegetables and walnuts
Walnuts feature a lot in Georgia cooking and
these badrijani nigvzit were on every table
without fail. Silky grilled or fried aubergine
slices were rolled around a subtly spiced paste
of walnut and herbs. Sweet grilled peppers
were stuffed or just plain. Pkhali are little balls
of pured vegetables mixed with spices and
flecks of walnut like shaped dips really. We
had spinach, beetroot and aubergine versions,
topped with pomegranate seeds. Gorgeous!

MUSHROOMS WITH CHEESE AT KOPALA

There must be meat

Georgians love meat, which can be found in
stews and barbecued on skewers on outdoor
grills. These mtsvadi can be lamb or chicken
but the pork we were served, including
suckling pig, is a particular Georgian favourite.
A steaming bowl of meat stew was always
part of our groaning table of dishes. Whether
Chakhokhbili chicken in a tomato sauce,
liver with a blackberry sauce or even chicken
cooked in milk, the meat was always tender
and melting and the flavours deep, with multilayered savoury spices. I wish Id recorded the
names of them all but our eating and drinking
marathon was too intense. Another reason to
go back to Georgia

teaching methods are not just based on lectures, but also on case
studies, simulation games and practical workshops designed to
give students the skills they need to succeed in their future careers.
Whether you're native to Poland or studying abroad, LU offers
a broad range of programmes in both English and Polish, in fields
such as economics, international relations, management, finance
and accounting, law, and administration. Having such a range
makes it popular with foreign students and its 4000-strong student
population is incredibly diverse. Almost a quarter of the overall
student population consists of foreign students, and more than
80% of the students in LUs English-language programmes come
from outside of Poland from countries such as Ukraine, United
Kingdom, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Germany, Belgium, Vietnam,
China, Russia, and many more.

Economics, BA in International Relations and European Studies,

Education.indd 1

MSc in International Business Economics, and MA in International

Relations. These programmes are run entirely in English according
to the highest educational standards set in the United Kingdom
and in Poland. Because of the collaboration, graduates of these
programmes receive two degrees one from Lazarski University,
and one from Coventry University. The international character of
the double-degree programmes at LU make them ideal for students
who are seeking an exciting and dynamic global career.
It's not just about the excellent academic standards though,
although that does help. Lazarski University has great affordable,
convenient housing options for you to choose from. The university
is located in Warsaw, Poland's capital, and the campus is just
four metro stops from the city centre and a 15-minute drive
from the citys main international airport. You're sure to find
accommodation to suit you. Combine the relatively low living
expenses with affordable tuition, and Lazarski University is a very
attractive investment for students who wish to receive a worldclass education in English, without bearing the costs of studying in
Britain or the United States.

MUCH CHEAPER AND

FASTER TRANSFERS
Innovative payment solutions, such as that
offered by Paysera, help you avoid huge bank
commission fees for international transfers

Traditionally, international money transfers

were performed via banks and could be a
costly affair. This was partly alleviated with the
introduction of the Single Euro Payments Area
(SEPA), which forced banks to lower prices for
euro payments among EU countries, but the
fees still remained significantly higher when
transferring in other currencies or in euros to
bank accounts outside of the EU.
For example, a transfer from a Polish bank
account to an EU country costs around 10
euros; in Bulgaria, its no less than 20 euros;
and from the UK, it can be 10 euros or more.
However, this landscape is rapidly changing
with the rise of innovative payment providers,
operating under the EU Payment Services
Directive, and working with banks all around
the world. Clients of such systems benefit not
only from fair exchange rates, but also from

EVP International.indd 12

prices for international transfers that are

equivalent to those for local payments.
One of the most promising is the Paysera
system, which offers transfers in 29 currencies
that can cost as little as one-hundredth of
what you would pay at a bank. For example,
transfers in euros to any EU country incur a fee
of just 0.20 euros.
The Paysera system has been launched
in Lithuania, a small EU country with a
population of three million people. Now widely
recognised, it has become the most popular
e-payment system in the country. In 2014,
Paysera was responsible for 13 per cent of
all international transfers from the country,
saving its clients several million euros.
Using Paysera saves you both money and
time, as you dont need to open numerous
accounts in different banks, which would

otherwise be necessary to replicate these

conditions. International transfers are
performed across Europe each working day,
and often reach the recipient in an hour.
Moreover, administration of your Paysera
account is completely free of charge.
It can be opened online, at any time,
within a few minutes.
Paysera was created and developed by the
e-money institution EVP International.
The company is rapidly expanding and
has recently opened branches in the UK
and Poland.

GO GOURMET IN GEORGIA
The new Hilton Batumi is a foodies dream thanks to its three delicious and affordable restaurants
Georgians are well-known for their love of food and drink.
Its importance in the countrys culture is best shown through the
traditional supra, a banquet-style feast, which includes an assortment
of dishes and often large amounts of wine. The new Hilton Batumi,
which opened in May, clearly understands this love of dining as it
offers three different dining options the Pelion restaurant, Nephele
sky bar, and Tandila Lobby Caf to make sure its guests foodie
dreams are well met.
Try Georgian delicacies at Pelion
Open from breakfast through to dinner, the Pelion restaurant is the
cornerstone of Hilton Batumi. Its chefs prepare excellent Georgian
delicacies right in front of you in the open-plan kitchen. Try freshly
baked bread, meats cooked to order, traditional sauces and seasonal
garden vegetables and salads, all washed down with soft drinks and
local Unesco-protected wines and spirits. The elegant, spacious
restaurant can also accommodate large corporate and private events.
Go for light refreshments at Tandila Lobby Caf
This informal caf is the perfect place to relax with friends or meet for
business, and the light, airy space has great views towards the park
and nearby lake. Its menu has a wide range of sweet and savoury, hot
and cold snacks, as well as soft drinks, coffee blends and a short list of
Georgian wines and spirits. When the weathers nice you can enjoy a
sweet treat out on its terrace.
Stargaze at the Nephele sky bar
On the top floor of this 20-storey hotel, the Nephele bar has incredible
views over the Black Sea and the city, especially from its spacious
outdoor terrace. The stylish bar is the best place to enjoy cocktails
(some of the citys best) and a long menu of Georgian and international
wines, champagnes and spirits, as well as various gourmet snacks. You
can also dance the night away to some of the coolest current tunes.

Tourinvest Ltd Hilton.indd 12

Situated next to Batumi Boulevard and close to the city centre, the
247-room Hilton Batumi welcomed its first guests last month. And,
in addition to its three dining options, the hotel has incredible views
and tons of facilities that mean it wont disappoint. From the balconies
(available in most rooms) and the rooftop terrace, guests can look out
over the Black Sea, the city centre and the nearby mountains.
Also included is a relaxing eforea spa, which offers various
indulgent treatments; underground parking facilities, to make it
easier to get in and out of the city; and a conference centre furnished
with state-of-the-art equipment and dedicated staff that will help plan
for all kinds of meetings and events.

Every two years Wizz Air hands its Cabin Crew an
extraordinary opportunity. Over and above their regular
duties on board WIZZs many flights, a select few Cabin
Crew members will be appointed as Brand Ambassadors
to tell passengers about the airlines amazing routes
and highlight the services the company has to offer.
This June, Wizz Air will elect 26 new Ambassadors with
its passengers voting for candidates on the airlines
Facebook page.
It is the third time WIZZ will be holding its Ambassador
elections, with the winners writing their names in
the history books by representing the company at

many exciting events. Over the last two years WIZZ

Ambassadors have attended more than 100 press
events, have been interviewed for the inflight magazine
and for newspapers, radio and TV channels across
Europe, have been part of hundreds of photo shoots
and have shot many destination videos. There will be
three Ambassadors elected from countries with more
