Practice 1 - The biggest challenge in my life.

The biggest challenge in my life is to get through my SPM examination

with good grades. Little did I know that the form five Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or
SPM examinations is so important to me. Ever since I have entered
secondary school, I have been repeatedly told and reminded by my
teachers and my family that SPM exam is very important because it is the
stepping stone into my career and my future. But as usual, students like me
have taken this matter lightly because we cannot see the future yet.
Many students can fairly get through the SPM exam, but how many of us
will be able to get through with flying colours is another question. Why is it so
important to do well at SPM level? It is simply because it is a gateway to
further education and higher education. Strange enough SPM qualification
itself does carry weight. A person with SPM qualification only gets to be
employed as a clerk and may be paid a salary of RM500.00 at the most. But
having a good SPM certificate can ensure many other perks.
Students with good grades are often offered scholarships to further
studies in local or foreign institutions of higher learning. This incentive will
be a great motivation to me as I do not have to burden my parents
unnecessarily. Moreover, those with good grades are also exempted from
sitting for foundation courses in some programmes. This is good because I
can save cost and time in pursuing my ambition that is to be a biotechnologist.
Those students who do well in SPM are also given priority to get into
Form Six or the pre-university classes which are conducted in some schools.
The cost is low and affordable for students and parents. Those who want to
do their pre-university in a private college because their SPM results are not
good enough to be absorbed into government schools, have to pay higher
fees.
With an excellent SPM result, students can also opt to do their A levels
which could take them for an oversea education in countries like the United

Kingdom, Australia or even in the United States of America. These countries

have excellent tertiary educational programmes which uses the SPM results
as their yardstick to take in Malaysian students.
Therefore, I think the biggest hurdle in my life is the SPM. It is the
deciding factor that makes or breaks my future and career. So my advice to all
my comrades out there, take the challenge and excel in your studies.

Conclusion
The biggest hurdle in
my life is the SPM.

Practice 2 - My Favourite TV Programme

The television (TV) is part and parcel of many households. Therefore,
watching television is a culture of todays modern society. It is a favourite
past-time of many people, cutting across the culture, creed, gender and age. I
must admit that I too enjoy sitting glued to the TV as mum often laments.
Since I watch TV whole day long, I dont blame mum. However, whenever I
watch my favourite TV programme she doesnt complain. In fact, she often
sits

The National Geographic is a well-known documentary programme,

focusing mainly on the ever-changing world, on Mother Earth and on nature
and peoples and creatures that colour it with. Just the press of a switch and a

savour its beauty and wonders. Personally, I am often awed and amazed with

I like this programme because it is very educational. It is a window to the
world. By watching it, I can travel, explore and discover the four corners of
the world. I have trekked up the highest peak and conquered Mt. Everest. I
have dived down the deepest trenches. I have walked through the wilderness

The National Geographic is my favourite programme as it has helped me

to grow and mature. I have watched it since I was a seven-year-old innocent
child. Now, I am more sensitive and aware of the world and Mother Earth. I
learn to be more appreciative of Mother Earth and its beauty and wonders. I
am more concern about the preservation and conservation of the world not
only now but also for posterity. In short, the National Geographic has
converted me into a more responsible citizen of the world and a caretaker of
Mother

Earth.

It is a touching and heart-warming TV programme and I will not hesitate to

recommend it to others so that they too have a chance to savour amazing
moments and appreciate and care for the one and only world we live in.

Practice 3 - The Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is one of Asia's major aviation
hubs and is a destination in itself. It is located at the top of the southern
corridor of Peninsular Malaysia, bordering the states of Selangor and Negeri
Sembilan. It is situated in the Sepang district, approximately 50 km from the
capital city, Kuala Lumpur. This RM 9 billion airport was opened by his
majesty, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Jaafar on June 27, 1998. The
airport which covers 10 000 hectares of land took less than 5 years to build. It
has a capacity to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of
cargo annually.
Despite its mammoth size, it is user-friendly and as our former Prime
Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad pointed out, it is not just an airport but a
piece of art delicates to beauty as well as the environment. It is often
described as the airport in the forest, forest in the airport because it is a
futuristic structure set in rainforest landscaping. Lush tropical forests, with its
diverse and exotic flora, skirt the entire airport structure.
The control tower, standing at 130 metres, is one the tallest in the world.
The colourful flora and the cascading waterfalls are part of spectacular and
breathtaking sight which can be viewed from the Super View Corridor. Moving
through the airport complex provides the visitor with glimpses of different
forest highlands, swamp, bamboo and multicoloured flora.
The five-level Main Terminal building which is 241 000 squares metres, is
located right at the heart of the airport complex. The building with its futuristic
design of glass and steel is both the entry and exit point of passengers. On
the top of the building is the departure concourse, and other facilities such as
foreign exchange counters and international telephone facilities.
The Satellite Building where passengers make connections to other
international flights is linked to the Main International Building by an
automated train shuttle. The Satellite Building houses lounges, prayers
rooms, duty free shops and a 80-room hotel for transit passengers.

The KLIA will be the countrys nucleus that will spearhead business and
trade. It is expected to provide 30 000 jobs and reap economic benefits for the
country. The successful completion of the airport well ahead of schedule
reflects the ability of Malaysians to build a world-class airport that has become
the pride of the country.

Practice 4 - My Hometown Is Still In My Heart

The most inimitable place to be, besides in my husbands arms, is
Harrogate, Tennessee. The rolling hills, clean crisp air, and spaciousness all
surpass the city life. The memories and joy I experience when I am there will
always have a special place in my heart.
My house resided in the country. A cow field was my backyard, and I
would play hide and seek with my friends behind the hay bales. From the
moment we got home and put our Bratz Doll backpacks down until the
moment the pinkish, yellow sun was setting, my friends and I were always in a
new adventure. At times, the golden rays would shine and radiate without a
cloud in the sky. The gentle breeze was just enough to make it comfortable.
The grass had already dried from the early morning dew, making it look
freshly cut and greener than ever. As we would run around making up games
to play, my black and white English Springer Spaniel, otherwise known as
Bubba, would follow us eagerly with his wet teeming tongue hanging out of his
parched mouth and his tail wagging like a hammer in an ongoing alarm clock.
In Knoxville, the population and space is far too crowded to enjoy pleasures
like those in Harrogate. In a way, it is suffocating here, and I miss the feeling
of peace and contentment when at home.
During winter season, it would snow fervently. My yard also consisted of
a rather giant slope. Due to many hills and back roads that would get black ice
very easily, school was called off frequently. My friends and I would get so
excited and call each other to make plans to go sledding! I would jump in my
thick, white leggings and blue nylon pants along with three pairs of socks and
waterproof shoes. On top I would have two under shirts, two regular shirts, a
small jacket, a large heavy jacket and a toboggan on. Layered and ready for
the cold, I would run outside and find my aqua green plastic sled from
underneath the back porch. It was crisp and cold outside, and the snow was a
clean white ready to be destroyed by the power of my sled. Hours later our
paths would be perfectly carved in the snow, and we would be ready to go in
and change to dry clothes, watch a movie, and drink a cup of hot chocolate.

Snow doesnt fall in the city, and even if it did, there is no room to go sledding.
These memories will not be forgotten.
When summertime came around again, the park was a popular place to
be. I always made new friends, and there was always so much to do with
these new acquaintances. Activities consisted of playing basketball at the
court, playing in the sand, riding bikes, and rollerblading on the trail, playing
on the jungle gym and tire swing, swinging, and so much more! Once my
mom and I had our picture taken on the swings and put in the Knoxville News
Sentinel. Sometimes the church congregation would have a picnic for
everyone there, and we would grill and enjoy each others company. Even
family reunions have been held there. The people in Harrogate are country
people, down to earth, and content with the simple life. They are not
concerned with the greatest and latest of things. This made the events at the
park so much more enjoyable.
If I could, I would go back and relive some of these memories. No matter
where I go, Harrogate will be home in my heart. No matter my age, Harrogate
holds some of the most memorable and cherishing parts of my life.

Practice 5 - My Favorite Activity

The place where I live is just a stones throw away from the sea. Ever
since Dad took up a job on Penang Island ten years ago, we have been living
in Dads ideal house that faces the sea. As he was born and bred in a fishing
village, the sea had always been part and parcel of his life. My siblings and I
also share the same affinity for the sea.
School, assignment and household chores usually keep us busy during
weekdays. However, come weekends, there is nothing more exciting than the
sea to lure us to its beaches. My favorite spot is a secluded one not far from
my house. Nestled among tall coconut trees, it offers an impressive view of
the beach. Here, I will spend hours sum bathing on the dazzling, white sand.
The waves race towards the shore with its frothy white foam. It is a
beautiful sight to behold. I am reminded if the splendor of nature. The lapping
of the waves and the sounds they make upon reaching the shore remind me
of the swishing of skirts by a row of dancing maidens. It sounds like an
orchestra in performance.
I am always in awe of the different sounds made by the tireless wind.
Sometimes, it is a gentle breeze that caresses my skin and ruffles my hair.
Sometimes, it sounds like a beloveds soft murmur. At other times, however,
the wind sounds disgruntled as it shrieks and howls. Then, I can feel its sting
as it blows and beats my hair on my face.
However, I am not alone on the beach. Along the edge of the water, I can
see tiny hermit crabs scurrying aimlessly on the sandy beach. Once in a
