Vareen: The quadratic formula
stated as

Yes, Vareen.

Very Good Vareen!

x=

(x is

equals to negative b plus or

minus square root of b
squared minus 4ac divided by
2a)

How to use the quadratic

formula? Yes, Liezel.
Liezel: To use the quadratic
formula, first write the
given equation in the
2

standard form a x + bx+ c=0 .

Thank You Liezel. Very Good!

B. Motivation
Teachers Activity
Okay class group yourself
into two.

Then identify the a, b, and c

and substitute them in the
quadratic formula.

Students Activity
Karen: Sir my partner is
Vareen.
Liezel: Ill take Rowena as
my partner Sir.

Students: Okay Sir.

Since you have found your
partner we will start the
activity. Okay class do you
know the one of the famous
educational game today its
called 4 pics 1 word. Ill
give you three sets of
pictures. The group who can
guess what the pictures means
and got a highest score
receive a gift. Just clap your
hands three times to recognize
that you want to guess/answer
the puzzle. If a group has a
wrong answer the other group
is given a chance to answer

the puzzle. You are only given

one chance to answer. Okay
class?
In a count of three you may
start interpreting, analyzing
and guess the pictures. One
Two Three!

(The students start guessing

the picture.)
Karen and Vareen: Clap! Clap!
Clap!

Yes Karen and Vareen. What is

your answer?

Karen and Vareen: Fraction

Very Good Karen and Vareen you Sir.
got 1 point for that answer.
Karen and Vareen: Thank You
Sir.
Your welcome! So here is the
second set of pictures. You
may start guessing in One
Two Three

Liezel and Rowena: Clap!

Clap! Clap!

Liezel and Rowena: Checking

is our answer sir!

Yes Liezel and Rowena please

tell me your answer?

Liezel and Rowena: Thank you

sir.

Checking is correct!! Good job

guys.
Your welcome Liezel and
Rowena. So we are now in the
final round for now each group
has already 1 point each. In
this round the first group who
can guess this set of picture
will be our winner in this
game. So good luck guys and
you may start guessing in One
Two Three

Karen and Vareen: Clap! Clap!

Clap!

Karen and Vareen: Review is

our answer sir.
Karen and Vareen: Thank you
sir.

Yes Karen and Vareen. What is

your answer?
Excellent! Karen and Vareen
your answer is correct. Lets
give them a round of applause
for our winner and here is
your gift.

C. Presentation of the Lesson

Teachers Activity
Our lesson for this morning
is all about Discriminant. In
our past lesson we tackled
about the quadratic formula
and it stated as x is equals
to negative b plus and minus
square root of b squared
minus 4ac divided by 2a

b b2 4 ac
x=
.
2a

The

quadratic formula makes it

easy to determine the nature
of the roots of a quadratic

Students Activity

equation even without

completely solving the
equation. The number
2

b 4 ac which appears under

the radical sign in the
quadratic formula is called
discriminant. By calculating
the discriminant before
solving the quadratic
equation, we can predict
whether the solutions will be
rational number, irrational
numbers or imaginary numbers.
Everyone please read!

All: If a, b, and c are

integers, then the type of
solution of a quadratic
2

a x + bx+ c=0 is

equation

determined as follows.
Discriminant
2

b 4 ac >0
and square
of an
integer

b24 ac <0
and not a
square of an
integer

b24 ac =0
b24 ac <0

Thank you class! Now lets

have some example. Rowena
please read the direction.

Thank you Rowena. Please take

your seat. Lets have letter

Solutions
Two
different
rational
solutions.
Two
different
irrational
solutions.
One rational
solution.
Two
different
imaginary
solution.

Rowena: Find the discriminant

for the following equations.
Determine whether the
solutions are rational,
irrational, or imaginary
numbers.

a) x + 4 x21=0

first

enumerate the a, b, and c in

our first example

a=1,b=4

and c=21 . Then substitute

this value in our equation
2
2
b 4 ac =(4) 4 ( 1 )(21 )=16+ 84=100

. Since that 100 is a perfect

square, the solution of this
equation is two different
rational numbers.

All: Yes sir.

Do you understand class?

Liezel:

Okay lets have example

2

letter b) 9 x 6 x+1=0

a=9, b=6, c=1

the

same process enumerate the a,

b, and c in this equation.
Liezel can you enumerate it?

Karen: The next step is

substitute the values in the
discrimant

b24 ac =(6)24 ( 9 ) ( 1 )=3636=0

Thank you Liezel.

Then what is the next step
Karen?

Thank you Karen.

And now Rowena can you tell
me the solution of this
quadratic equation?
Thank you Rowena.
I think you already know the
process on how to solve
discriminant. Now I have here
individual board work for
you. Solve the discriminant
and state the solution of the
quadratic equation assign to

Rowena: The solution of this

quadratic equation is one
rational equation.

you and explain your work.

Karen solve no. 1, Vareen no.
2, Liezel no. 3 and lastly
Rowena solve no. 4.
1)

3 x2 +5 x9=0

2)

a216 a+57=0

3)

6 a2 +17 a14=0

4)

2 x 25 x +1=0

Karen: 3 x +5 x9=0 . First I

enumerate the value of

a=3,b=5c=9.

Then

substitute these values in

the discriminant

b24 ac =(5)24 ( 3 ) (9 )=25+108=133

. Since that 133 is not a
perfect square, the solution
in this quadratic equation is
two different irrational
equations.
Vareen:

a 16 a+57=0 .

Following the process on how

to solve the discriminant our

a=1,b=16c=57 .
Substitute the values in the
discriminant

b24 ac =(16)24 (1 )( 57 ) =256228=28

. Since 28 is not a perfect
square the solution of this
equation are two different
irrational equations.
Liezel:

6 a2 +17 a14=0 . The

same process

a=6, b=17,c=14.

Then

substitute the values in the

discriminant

b24 ac =(17)24 ( 6 ) (14 )=289+ 336=625

. Since this is a perfect
square the solution in this
equation is Two different
rational numbers.
Rowena:

2 x 25 x +1=0 . In

this equation our

a=2,b=5, c=1 . Substitute

these values in the
discriminant

b24 ac =(5 )2 4 ( 2 ) ( 1 )=25+ 8=17.

Since that 17 is not a
perfect square our solution
in this equation is two
different irrational numbers.
Very Good class! Give
yourself a round of applause.

All: Clap! Clap! Clap!

D. Synthesis
Teachers Activity
Class lets go back to our
game earlier. These three
words here have something to
do in our lesson for this
morning and thats all about
Discriminant. What do you
think the connection of that
word in our topic this
morning?
Anyone who can try. Yes
Karen.
Okay. Thank you Karen nice
try. Other answers please.
Yes, Liezel.

Students Activity

(The students are listening

attentively)

Karen: Maybe sir the

quadratic equation is in the
fraction form.
Liezel: For me sir the
connection between fraction
and discrimination is; the
meaning of a fraction is part
of a whole this somehow
related to our topic
discriminant because we get
the

Very Good Liezel. How about

the second and third word
Checking and Review can you
give me the connection of

b24 ac

in the

quadratic formula to
determine the nature of the
roots of the quadratic
equation.

these words in our topic?

Yes, Vareen.

Thank you so much Vareen.

Over all in the concept of
discriminants how can you
imply the learning that you
get to our daily living? Yes,
Rowena.

Very good class. Nice job

everyone. Answer the activity
below class. Follow the
direction given.

IV.

Vareen: The connection of the

words checking and review sir
in our topic this morning is
we use the discriminant to
check or review the answer of
the quadratic equation. By
calculating the discriminant
we can predict whether the
solutions will be rational,
irrational or imaginary
numbers.
Rowena: I can apply the
concept of discriminant in
our daily life living for
example sir before playing
games or make something at
night I must check first my
assignment if I have and do
it before playing or doing
something.
Liezel: We can apply the
concept of discriminant sir
in our daily life living for
example if we want to have
friends we must check/
review/know the persons we
want to be friend for your
own sake.
