LayaYoga
Layaisthestateofmindwhenoneforgetsalltheobjectsofsensesandgetsabsorbedintheobjectof
meditation.LayaenablesonetohaveperfectcontroloverthefiveTattvas,mindandIndriyas.The
fluctuationsofmindwillstop.Themind,bodyandPranawillbeentirelysubdued.
ForLayaYoga,SambhaviMudraisaneffectivemethod,inwhichoneintentlyconcentratesonanyoneofthe
ShatChakras.TratakaexerciseplaysavitalpartingettingsuccessinLaya.Induecourseofpractice,the
YogingetsestablishedinSamadhi.HebecomesaJivanmukta.
AnahataSounds
AnahatasoundsarethemysticsoundsheardbytheYoginduringhismeditation.Itisasignofthe
purificationofNadis.Somestudentscanclearlyhearitthroughanyoneoftheearsandsomebyboththe
ears.Thereareloudaswellassubtlesounds.Fromtheloud,onewillhavetocontemplateonthesubtleand
fromthesubtletothesubtler.Beginnerscanhearthesoundonlywhentheearsareclosed.Advanced
studentscanconcentrateontheAnahatasoundevenwithoutclosingtheears.Anahatasoundisalsotermed
OmkaraDhvani.TheyproceedfromtheAnahatacentreoftheSushumnaNadi.
SitinyourusualAsana.Closetheearswiththethumbs.Hearandminutelyobservetheinternalsound
throughtheears.Thesoundthatyouhearfromwithinwillmakeyoudeaftoallexternalsounds.Closethe
eyesalso.Inthebeginningofyourpractice,youwillhearmanyloudsounds.Laterontheyareheardina
mildway.Themindhavingatfirstconcentrateditselfonanyonesoundfixesfirmlytothatandisabsorbed
init.Themindbecominginsensibletotheexternalimpressions,becomesonewiththesoundasmilkwith
waterandthenbecomesrapidlyabsorbedinChidakasa.Justasthebeedrinkingthehoneyalonedoesnot

carefortheodoursoalsotheChitta,whichisalwaysabsorbedintheinnersound,doesnotlongforsensual
objects,asitisboundbythesweetsmellorNadaandhasabandoneditsflittingnature.
ThesoundproceedingfromPranavaNada,whichisBrahman,isofthenatureofeffulgence.Themindgets
absorbedinit.Themindexistssolongasthereissound,butwithitscessation,thereisthatstatetermed
Turiya.Itisthesupremestate.ItistheUnmanistate.ThemindgetsabsorbedalongwithPranabyconstant
concentrationuponNada.Thebodyappearstobealogofwoodanditdoesnotfeelheatorcold,joyor
sorrow.Differentkindsofsoundsproceedfromtheheart(Anahatasounds).
Nadathatisheardthroughtheearsisoftenkinds.ThefirstisthesoundChini(likethepronunciationofthe
word)thesecondisChinichinithethirdisthesoundofabellthefourthisthatofaconchthefifthis
thatofalutethesixthisthesoundofcymbalstheseventhisthetuneofaflutetheeighthisthevoiceof
adrum(Bheri)theninthisthesoundofadoubledrum(Mridanga)andthetenthisthesoundofthunder.
Youcannotexpectthesoundimmediatelyafteryoucloseyourears.Youshouldconcentrateandkeepyour
mindonepointed.Theparticularsoundthatyouheartoday,youmaynotheareveryday.Butyouwillhear
anyoneofthetenAnahatasounds.
ThedescriptiongivenaboveisLayathroughNada,Anahatasound.Inthesamemanner,Layacanbeeffected
byconcentrationatthetipofthenose(NasikagraDrishti),atthespacebetweenthetwoeyebrows
(BhrumadhyaDrishti),meditationonthefiveTattvas,onSohamMantra,AhamBrahmaAsmi,TatTvamAsi
Mahavakyasandothermethodsalso.
BhaktiYogaClassesOfWorship
AtthelowestrungoftheladderofBhaktiYogacomestheworshipofelementsanddepartedspirits.Thisis
thelowestformofworship.NextcomestheworshipofRishis,DevasandPitris.Thefaithofeachisshaped
accordingtohisownnature.Themanconsistsofthatwhichhisfaithis,heiseventhat.Thethirdclass
includesthosefollowerswhoworshipAvataraslikeSriRama,Krishna,Narasimha.Theabovefourclassesof
BhaktashavetheSagunaformofworship.NextcomestheclassofBhaktaswhodoNirgunaUpasanaon
Brahmandevoidofattributes.Thisisthehighestformofworshipthatissuitablefortheintelligentpeople
whohavestrongwillandboldunderstanding.ThisisknownasAhamgrahaUpasanaorJnanaYogaSadhana.
Bhakticanbeacquiredandcultivated.PracticeoftheNavaVidhaBhakti(ninemethodsofdevotion)will
infuseBhakti.ConstantSatsanga,Japa,Prayer,meditation,Svadhyaya,Bhajan,servicetosaints,Dana,
Yatra,etc.,willdevelopBhakti.ThefollowingaretheninemethodsofdevelopingBhakti:

Namdev,Ramdas,TulsidasandotherswereafewblessedsoulstowhomGodgaveHisDarshan.These
BhaktaswereYogaBhrashtas.TheycameintothisworldwithagreatassetofspiritualSamskaras.They
worshippedGodinseveralbirthswithsinceredevotion.TheydidnotdomuchSadhanaintheirfinal
incarnation.Thisdevotionwasnaturalandspontaneousinthemonaccountoftheforceofprevious
SamskarasofBhakti.Ordinarypeopleshouldadoptdrastic,specialmeasuresanddospecialSadhanafor
developingBhaktirapidly.Newgrooves,newchannelshavetobecutintheoldstony,devotionlessheartto
amaximumdegree.Throughconstantprayer,Japa,Kirtan,servicetoBhaktas,charity,Vrata,Tapas,
DhyanaandSamadhiaBhaktashouldraisehisconsciousnesstoahighdegreeandacquireParaBhakti,
highestknowledgeandSupremepeace.Intheadvancedstagesofmeditation,themeditatorandthe
meditated,theworshipperandtheworshipped,theUpasakaandtheUpasyawillbecomeone.Dhyanawill
terminateinSamadhi.Constantandregularpracticeisnecessary.
AHathaYogireachesthehigheststagebythepracticeofvariousMudras,Bandhas,Asanasandother
exercisesaJnanibythepracticeofSravana,MananaandNididhyasanaaKarmaYoginbytheselfless
works(NishkamaSeva)aBhaktabydevelopingBhaktiandselfsurrender,andaRajaYogibydeep
concentrationandmanipulationofthemind.TheGoalisthesameinallcasesbutthemethodsaredifferent.
Concentrationandmeditationontheprimordialenergy,Shakti,isonlyamodificationofJnanaYogic
Sadhana.ConcentrationandmeditationonthedifferentcentresofenergybelongstoRajaYoga.
ConcentrationatthedifferentChakrasandNadisandawakeningtheShaktithroughphysicalmethodsbelong
toHathaYoga.ConcentrationandmeditationontheDevata,presidingdeityofthedifferentinnerChakras,
maybetakenasanadvancedcourseinBhaktiYoga.Forquicksuccess,differentmethodsofSadhanashould
becombined.
TheBhaktawhenhemeditatesonthepresidingdeityorDevata,imaginesaparticularformofGodateach
Chakra.InbooksofMantraShastra,elaboratedescriptionsofGodandtheDevatasaregivenforeach

Chakra.AccordingtothetemperamentofthestudentstheytaketheformofGodinadifferentway.The
experiencesandfeelingsoftheaspirantsvaryinallcases.ThereforeIamnotgivingthedescriptionsofall
theDevasandDevatas.WhenamancloseshiseyesandmeditatesontheinnerChakras,hegetsvarious
visionsandseesthedifferentformsofGod.Thatisthebesttowhichheshouldcling.Thenonlyrealgrowth
ispossible.ThegeneralinformationthatisgiveninthetheoreticalportionofthisKundaliniYogawillsurely
helpalotinconcentrationandmeditationontheChakras.
Mantras
AwakeningKundaliniiseffectedbyMantraalso.ItisaportionofBhaktiYoga.Someaspirantsshouldrepeat
theMantragivenbytheirGuruevenlakhsoftimes.DuringthetimeofDikshaofanUttamaAdhikari,the
GuruuttersaparticularMantraandKundaliniisawakenedimmediately.Theconsciousnessofthestudentis
raisedtoaveryhighdegree.ThisdependsuponthefaithofthestudentinhisGuruandintheMantra.
Mantras,whenreceivedfromtheGuruinperson,areverypowerful.AspirantsinKundaliniYogashouldtake
tothisMantraSadhanaonlyaftergettingaproperMantrafromaGuru.ThereforeIamnottouchingthis
pointindetail.Mantraswhenlearntthroughordinaryfriendsorthroughbookscannotproduceanybenefitat
all.MantrasarenumerousandtheGurushouldselectaparticularMantrabywhichtheconsciousnessofa
particularstudentcanbeawakened.
EightMajorSiddhis
Anaccomplished,PurnayogiinthepathofKundaliniYogaisinpossessionofeightmajorSiddhis,viz.,
Anima,Mahima,Laghima,Garima,Prapti,Prakamya,VasitvamandIshitvam.
1.Anima:TheYogicanbecomeasminuteashepleases.
2.Mahima:ThisistheoppositeofAnima.Hecanbecomeasbigashelikes.Hecanmakehisbodyassume
averylargesize.Hecanfillupthewholeuniverse.HecanassumeaViratSvarupa.
3.Laghima:Hecanmakehisbodyaslightascottonorfeather.Vayustambhanamisdonethroughthis
Siddhi.InJalastambhanamalsothepowerisexercisedtoaverysmalldegree.Thebodyisrenderedlightby
PlaviniPranayama.TheYogiproducesadiminutionofhisspecificgravitybyswallowinglargedraughtsof
air.TheYogitravelsintheskywiththehelpofthisSiddhi.Hecantravelthousandsofmilesinaminute.
4.Garima:ThisistheoppositeofLaghima.InthistheYogiacquiresanincreaseofspecificgravity.Hecan
makethebodyasheavyasamountainbyswallowingdraughtsofair.
5.Prapti:TheYogistandingontheearthcantouchthehighestthings.Hecantouchthesunorthemoonor
thesky.ThroughthisSiddhitheYogiattainshisdesiredobjectsandsupernaturalpowers.Heacquiresthe
powerofpredictingfutureevents,thepowerofclairvoyance,clairaudience,telepathy,thoughtreading,etc.
Hecanunderstandthelanguagesofthebeastsandbirds.Hecanunderstandunknownlanguagesalso.He
cancurealldiseases.

6.Prakamya:Hecandiveintothewaterandcancomeoutatanytimehelikes.ThelateTrilingaSwamiof
BenaresusedtoliveforsixmonthsunderneaththeGanges.ItistheprocessbywhichaYogimakeshimself
invisiblesometimes.Bysomewritersitisdefinedtobethepowerofenteringbodyofanother(Parakaya
Pravesh).SriSankaraenteredthebodyofRajaAmarukaofBenares.TirumularinSouthernIndiaenteredthe
bodyofashepherd.RajaVikramadityaalsodidthis.Itisalsothepowerofkeepingayouthlikeappearance
foranylengthoftime.RajaYayatihadthispower.
7.Vashitvam:Thisisthepoweroftamingwildanimalsandbringingthemundercontrol.Itisthepowerof
mesmerisingpersonsbytheexerciseofwillandofmakingthemobedienttoonesownwishesandorders.It
istherestraintofpassionsandemotions.Itisthepowertobringmen,womenandtheelementsunder
subjection.
8.Ishitvam:Itistheattainmentofdivinepower.TheYogibecomestheLordoftheuniverse.TheYogiwho
hasthispowercanrestorelifetothedead.Kabir,Tulsidas,AkalkotSwamiandothershadthispowerof
bringingbacklifetothedead.

transferringhissoul.

Hecanbearextremesofclimateswithoutdiscomfort.
Hesitsonthesnowandmeltsitbythewarmthgeneratedinhisbody.
AYogicovershisbodywithasheetdippedinverycoldwateranddriesitbytheYogaheatgivenofffrom
hisbody.Afewadeptshavedriedasmanyasthirtysheetsinasinglenight.
AperfectYogicremateshisbodyintheendbytheYogicheatgeneratedbyhispowerofYoga.
InstructionsOnSiddhis

1.BytheprocessofHathaYoga,theYogiattainsperfectphysicalbodyRupalavanyaBalaVajrasamhanana
KayaSampat.Theperfectionofthebodyconsistsinbeauty,grace,strengthandadamantinehardness.The
powertobearextremecoldandheat(Titiksha),thepowertolivewithoutwaterandfoodandotherpowers
comeunderthecategoryofKayaSampat(perfectionofbody).
2.SincethebodyoftheHathaYogiisperfectandfirm,hismindalsoisfirmandonepointed.Bythe
practicesofDharanaandDhyana,hereachesthehighestrungintheYogicladderandattainsImmortality
throughYogicSamadhi.TheYogiwhohasreachedthehigheststage,willhavethe8majorandalltheminor
Siddhis.
3.AttainmentofpowersdependsupontheamountofconcentrationatdifferentChakrasandTattvasand
awakeningofKundalini.ThepracticeofMudras,Bandhas,AsanasandPranayamaswillalsohelpalotin
acquiringSiddhis.
4.TheSiddhisthatareobtainedbythepracticeofMudrascanbeobtainedbythepracticeofBandhas,
Asanas,PranayamasandalsobytheconcentrationondifferentChakras.Thatdependsuponthe
temperamentandcapacityoftheaspirants.Onecanobtainthedesiredgoalbyoneexerciseandothersby
differentmethods.Thereforeifoneisnotabletogetsuccessbyaparticularexercise,hewillhavetohave
recoursetootherexercises.
5.Manyofthe8majorSiddhisarenotpossibleatallatthepresentage(KaliYuga),whenthebodyand
mindofthevastmajorityarenotfitenough.EventodaythereareseveralSiddhaswhohavethepowerto
performsomeoftheSiddhis.Whenpeopleapproachthemtodothisandthat,theyhidethemselvesor
generallysay:Idonotknow.TheyarenotmuchparticularabouttheseSiddhis.Theiraimistoignore
theseasunrealandaspiretoreachthehighest.TheyaretheonlyrealYogins.Manyareabletousesome
powersandtheydonotknowhowtheyareabletodothem.
6.Onecanreadthethoughtsofothers.AmaninLondonhearsthespiritualmessageofsagesinIndia.You
haveseenseveralpersonsremovingthepoisonofcobrasbychantingsomeMantrasorbymeretouch.By
givingsomesortofleaves,incurablediseasesarecured.Therearemenwhowillveryaccuratelytellyour
past,presentandfuture.Someareabletoseeastralentities.Stoppingthefunctionsoftheheartand
changingthemindofothersandotherpowersareduetoYogicpractices.
7.Nowadaysyoucannotfindamanwhohasdevelopedallthepowers.Whenonegetscertainpowers,he
stopstherebytheinfluenceofMayaandfalseTushti(satisfaction)andusesthepowersforhislivelihoodor
forfame.Thereforeheisnotabletoproceedfurtherandattainperfection.ItisnotthemistakeoftheYogic
Kriyas.Youshouldnotlosefaith.Faith,attention,sincerityandearnestnesswillleadyoutosuccess.
Dharana(Concentration)
1.Fixthemindonsomeobjecteitherwithinthebodyoroutside.Keepittheresteadyforsometime.Thisis
Dharana.Youwillhavetopractisethisdaily.LayaYogahasitsbasisonDharana.

2.PurifythemindfirstthroughthepracticeofYama,NiyamaandthentaketothepracticeofDharana.
Concentrationwithoutpurityisofnouse.Therearesomeoccultistswhohaveconcentration.Buttheyhave
nogoodcharacter.Thatisthereasonwhytheydonotmakeanyprogressinthespiritualline.
3.HewhohasasteadyAsanaandhaspurifiedtheYogaNadiswillbeabletoconcentrateeasily.
Concentrationwillbeintenseifyouremovealldistractions.AtrueBrahmachari,whohaspreservedhis
Veerya,willhavewonderfulconcentration.
4.Somefoolish,impatientstudentstaketoDharanaatoncewithoutundergoingthepreliminaryethical
training.Thisisaseriousblunder.Ethicalperfectionisofparamountimportance.
5.YoucanconcentrateinternallyonanyoneofthesevenChakrasandexternallyonanyDevata,Hari,
KrishnaorDevi.
6.Attentionplaysaprominentpartinconcentration.Hewhohasdevelopedhispowerofattentionwillhave
goodconcentration.Amanwhoisfilledwithpassionandallsortsoffantasticdesires,canhardlyconcentrate
onanyobjectevenforasecond.Hismindwillbejumpinglikeamonkey.
7.HewhohasgainedPratyahara(withdrawingthesensesfromtheobjects)willhaveagoodconcentration.
Youwillhavetomarchinthespiritualpathstepbystep,stagebystage.LaythefoundationofYama,
Niyama,Asana,PranayamaandPratyaharatostartwith.ThesuperstructureofDharanaandDhyanawillbe
successfulonlythen.
8.Youshouldbeabletovisualiseveryclearlytheobjectofconcentrationeveninitsabsence.Youmustcall
upthementalpictureatamomentsnotice.Ifyouhavegoodpracticeinconcentration,youcandothis
withoutmuchdifficulty.
9.Inthebeginningstageofpractice,youcanconcentrateonthetickticksoundofawatchorontheflame
ofthecandleoronanyotherobjectthatispleasingtothemind.Thisisconcreteconcentration.Therecanbe
noconcentrationwithoutsomethinguponwhichthemindmayrest.Themindcanbefixedonapleasant
object.Itisverydifficultinthebeginningtofixthemindonanyobjectwhichitdislikes.
10.Ifyouwanttoincreaseyourpowerofconcentrationyouwillhavetoreduceyourworldlyactivities.You
willhavetoobserveMounaeverydayfortwohoursorevenmore.
11.Practiseconcentrationtillthemindiswellestablishedontheobjectofconcentration.Whenthemindruns
awayfromtheobject,bringitbackagain.
12.Whenconcentrationisdeepandintense,allothersensescannotoperate.Hewhopractisesconcentration
foronehourdailyhastremendouspsychicpowers.Hewillhaveastrongwillpower.
13.VedantinstrytofixthemindonAtman.ThisistheirDharana.HathaYoginsandRajaYoginsconcentrate
theirmindonthesixChakras.BhaktasconcentrateontheirIshtaDevata.Otherobjectsofmeditationare
describedunderTratakaandLayaYoga.Concentrationisnecessaryforalltheaspirants.

14.Thosewhopractiseconcentrationevolvequickly.Theycandoanyworkwithgreaterefficiencyinno
time.Whatotherscandoinsixhourscanbedoneeasilyinhalfanhourbyonewhohasaconcentrated
mind.Concentrationpurifiesandcalmsthesurgingemotions,strengthensthecurrentofthoughtandclarifies
theideas.Concentrationkeepsamaninhismaterialprogressalso.Hewillturnoutverygoodworkinhis
officeorbusinesshouse.Whatwascloudyandhazybefore,becomescleareranddefiniteWhatwasvery
difficultbeforebecomeseasynowandwhatwascomplex,bewilderingandconfusingbefore,comeseasily
withinthementalgrasp.Youcanachieveanythingbyconcentration.Nothingisimpossibleforonewho
regularlypractisesconcentration.Clairvoyance,clairaudience,mesmerism,hypnotism,thoughtreading,
music,mathematicsandothersciencesdependuponconcentration.
15.Retireintoaquietroom.Closeyoureyes.Seewhathappenswhenyouthinkofanapple.Youmaythink
ofitscolour,shape,size,differentpartssuchasskin,pulp,seeds,etc.Youmaythinkoftheplaces,
AustraliaorKashmir,wherefromitisimported.Youmaythinkofitsacidicorsweettasteanditseffectson
thedigestivesystemandblood.Throughthelawofassociation,ideasofsomeotherfruitsalsomaytryto
enter.Themindmaybegintoentertainsomeotherextraneousideas.Itmaybegintowander.Itmaythink
ofmeetingafriendattheRailwayStationat4p.m.Itmaythinkofpurchasingatoweloratinofteaor
biscuits.Youshouldtrytohaveadefinitelineofthought.Thereshouldnotbeanybreakinthelineof
thinking.Youmustnotentertainanyotherthoughtwhichisnotconnectedwiththesubjectonhand.Themind
willtryitslevelbesttoruninitsoldgrooves.Youwillhavetostrugglehardinthebeginning.Theattemptis
somewhatlikegoingupasteephill.Youwillrejoiceandfeelimmensehappinesswhenyougetsuccessin
concentration.
16.Justaslawsofgravitation,cohesion,etc.,operateinthephysicalplane,soalsodefinitelawsofthought
suchaslawsofassociation,relativity,contiguity,etc.,operateinthementalplaneorthoughtworld.Those
whopractiseconcentrationshouldthoroughlyunderstandtheselaws.Whenthemindthinksofanobject,it
maythinkofitsqualitiesanditspartsalso.Whenitthinksofacauseitmaythinkofitseffectalso.
17.IfyoureadwithconcentrationBhagavadGitaortheVicarofWakefieldseveraltimes,youcangetnew
ideaseachtime.Throughconcentrationyouwillgetinsight.Subtleesotericmeaningswillflashoutinthe
fieldofmentalconsciousness.Youwillunderstandtheinnerdepthofphilosophicalsignificance.
18.Whenyouconcentrateonanobjectdonotwrestlewiththemind.Avoidtensionanywhereinthebody.
Thinkgentlyoftheobjectinacontinuousmanner.Itisverydifficulttopractiseconcentrationwhenoneis
veryhungryandwhenoneissufferingfromanacutedisease.
19.Ifemotionsdisturbyouduringconcentration,donotmindthem.Theywillpassawaysoon.Ifyoutryto
