Richmond Borough Athletics

Well done to all those students who

House Charity Sleep Out

Please could all parents of students taking part in
the upcoming Sleep Out encourage them to
fundraise, as the purpose of the event is to raise
money for young, homeless people. They can do

Choral and Orchestral Concert hosted by Christs School, Richmond, at

the church of St. Matthias, Richmond Hill
4th July at 7.30
On July 4th at 7.30, at the church of St. Matthias on Richmond Hill, the school is putting on a
major concert featuring the work of the Welshman Sir Karl Jenkins (knighted last week!),
American John Williams, and the British choral arranger Bob Chilcott who has arranged a song
by Billy Joel, as well as a number of concerto performances featuring the most gifted of
Christs musicians. The full programme for the evening is:
Purcell. Sonata for trumpet and strings (soloist Patrick Wilson)
Grieg. Peer Gynt suite no. 1 for orchestra
Billy Joel (arr. Bob Chilcott). And So it Goes for choir
John Williams. Theme/Remembrances from Schindlers List for violin and orchestra
(soloist Otto Sterner)
Arban. Fantaisie and Variations on Carnival of Venice for trumpet and orchestra(soloist
Patrick Wilson)
Sir Karl Jenkins. Songs of Sanctuary (Adiemus) for choir, strings, flute and percussion
(soloist Davina Silwano)
Sir Karl Jenkins iconic Adiemus shot the composer to a prominence, following its appearance
in a Delta Airlines TV advert, that Jenkins had not even had with his work with Soft Machine
(voted best small group in the Melody Maker jazz poll of 1974) or the jazz-rock group Nucleus
(which won first prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1970). Adiemus inhabits a unique musical
world which features a fantastic mixture of elements from Jenkins jazz-rock background and
African-style singing blended with more traditional choral sounds. Christs forthcoming
performance has already generated sufficient interest from outside the school to gain the
choir an invitation to perform Adiemus in the Carnegie Hall, New York, in January 2016!
John Williams music for the film Schindlers List has become a firm favourite with millions of
listeners, and its instrumentation for large orchestra with solo violin is an ideal vehicle for
showing off the talents of Otto Sterner, one of Christs talented musicians.
Griegs well-known Peer Gynt remains one of the best-loved pieces in the orchestral
repertoire, and features Morning and In the Hall of the Mountain King, which will be very
familiar to almost all listeners. Arbans Variations on Carnival of Venice is a thrilling showpiece
for the trumpet, with Wynton Marsalis performance, for example, having had nearly half a
million YouTube hits. This concert will feature the playing of Christs own Patrick Wilson.
Christs School is delighted to be hosting this concert in the wonderful St. Matthias Church. Its
distinctive high spire and location at the top of Richmond Hill make it a familiar landmark for
miles around. The church was designed by the great Victorian architect Gilbert Scott who
also designed the Albert Memorial, Kings College London chapel and the Midland Grand
Hotel at St. Pancras Station. The church is in a neo-gothic style, and its ambience and
acoustic make it an ideal setting for the concert.
We would be delighted to see you at St. Matthias on 4th July please book tickets early,
although tickets will be sold (subject to availability) on the evening itself.
This concert is not only open to the school community but also to the general public. Tickets
