SAFE WORK PROCEDURES

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
Electrical appliances used in a workplace must be tested by a competent person and a current inspection tag fitted to the appliance lead.
2.
Electrical appliances must only be used on a circuit fitted with or protected by a safety switch.
3.
Electrical appliances must not be used for any purpose other than that for which they were designed.

Key processes to be followed


Check casings for damage, cracks and missing screws.
Inspect lead and plug for damage; current test tag must be attached.
Make sure that any controls operate smoothly.
Ensure that any handles and grips are fitted firmly, and do not move.
Use appliances in a dry area keep leads out of water.
Do not stand appliance in water during use.
Do not piggyback double adaptors use suitable power board.
Do not insert metal objects or fingers into appliances with exposed
heating elements (such as toasters or radiators) or connections.
Follow manufacturers instructions for use do not overload.
Do not place metal objects in a microwave oven.
Exercise care in the use of cooking or heating appliances.
Ensure that guards are fitted to desk or pedestal fans before use.
Keep fabrics, paper and other combustible materials away from heaters
(especially bar-type) and heated air outlets.
Provide suitable smoke detector in areas where appliances are used.
Unplug machine before carrying out maintenance.
Grasp lead by plug only to remove- do not pull or jerk cord.
Do not allow leads to lie on floor where they will be walked on or rolled
over.

Use oil heater or reverse cycle airconditioning unit for heating.
Grasp plug to remove from outlet.
Keep leads in tidy condition.
Use coiled leads to keep tidy.
