Cleaning Public Toilets

PROCEDURE
OBJECTIVES

To ensure the safety of workers while cleaning public toilets in


accordance with Councils provision of cleaning services contract. For
the cleaning of toilets facilities the worker is provided with a light truck
with a tray mounted water pressure cleaner, first aid kit, suitable PPE,
appropriate materials (i.e. chemicals, toilet paper, soap), tools and
signage.

Pre Operational Safety Checks


- Workers working alone and outside normal working hours must have
an effective means of communication Team Leaders will make
regular contact with workers
- Workers must undertake an inspection of the site prior to commencing
works and complete a job safety analysis sheet as required and
report any changes in JSAs to the Team Leader
- Workers must ensure measures are in place to manage public safety
by erecting safety signage and physical barriers as required
- Manage anti-social behaviour by stopping work and avoid
confrontation; seek Police intervention; report to the Team Leader
and complete an OHS incident report
Working Procedures
TEAM LEADERS
- Provide advice and guidance to team members
- Provide workers with Job Safety Analysis for their tasks
- Monitor workers performance and compliance with OH&S, traffic
management and Councils policies and procedures
- Provide feedback to worker/s regularly

PROCEDURES

EMPLOYEES
- Comply with DCCs policies and procedures, OH&S and Traffic
Management procedures, Safe Work Standard Operational
Procedures and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the safe use
of chemicals
- Seek clarification or report any irregularity, or damage, to the Team
Leader
- Secure load/s during transportation and if necessary cover it
adequately refer to Load Restraint Guide, Second Edition,
2004((NTC).
- Maintain vehicle and small plants to a clean and workable condition
- Follow plant and equipment manual/handbook guidelines
- Close the toilet prior to cleaning and display the appropriate sign
- Wear the appropriate PPE as indicated on the SOP
- Check for sharps and needles - needles must be removed using tongs,
shovel and dust pan and disposed of in approved containers
- Check for blood and bodily fluids - Isolate and clean the soiled area
with universal absorbent (SNOW) and then rinse the area with water
and disinfectant
- Clean and sanitize all surfaces with a suitable anti-viral and anti-germ
cleanser, hospital grade disinfectant according to the specified
standards
- Replace toilet paper, soap and other reusable materials
- Dispose of waste at the approved locations
Post Operational Safety Checks
Remove all safety signage when the site is safe for the public to enter
Dispose of waste material at approved locations
Clean and sanitize all equipment used
Check approved sharps and needles containers and empty if required
Ensure that all tools, chemicals and signage are cleaned and stored
appropriately in the vehicle at the end of the working day
- Check condition of equipment and report any faults
- Faulty equipment must be tagged out and not used again until signed
back into use by workshop staff
