SAFE WORK PROCEDURES

BAT DROPPINGS
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:

Persons required to handle animal and bird waste must be fully instructed in the precautions to follow to prevent adverse health effects to
themselves and others.

Key processes to be followed


Provide safe access for persons and implements, etc, to affected areas.
Prevent unauthorised access to areas affected by removal process.
Ensure that any ventilation for fresh air and cooling provided in roof voids
does not disturb dust or cause contaminants to affect adjacent areas.
Bat droppings may carry diseases which can be contracted through
inhalation of spores which are present in accumulations of droppings.
Bites from insectivorous bats can result in infection by lyssavirus or rabies.
Moisten waste before removal to prevent spread of airborne dust.
Seal heating and cooling air ducts or shut down systems during clean up.
Full body protection must be worn when working in heavily infested areas,
including hair, hand, and, eye protection, and disposable boot covers.
Use tools and utensils to scrape and lift droppings, and transfer to bag.
Place dead animals and other matter in with droppings for disposal.
Wash affected areas with detergent and disinfectant.
Wash boots, gloves and other non-disposable PPE thoroughly before re-use.
Dispose of contaminated clothing and PPE as other biological waste.
Check with local authority for correct method of disposal before dumping.
Persons should shower and wash hair thoroughly after waste removal work.
Hands and face must be washed before eating, drinking or smoking.

Respiratory protection must be
worn in contaminated areas.
Wear P1particulate dust mask.
Wear puncture resistant leather
or nitrile-coated gloves.
Avoid creating dust when
removing keep waste moist.
Wear disposable coveralls.
Wear eye and hand protection.
Place all waste in sealable plastic
bag, and seal tightly.
Wash bags if placing in bin.
Dispose of waste correctly.
Wash hands before eating,
drinking or smoking.
