All persons carrying out work involving hazardous substances must be instructed in correct handling and safety precautions.

Key processes to be followed


Barricade work area to exclude unauthorised persons, and provide safety of
workers from passing traffic, vehicles, etc.
Ensure that a clear safe path is provided for traffic, and provide a traffic
controller if safe 2-way traffic path cannot be maintained.
Persons handling and using bitumen emulsions must be provided with and
wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Bitumen emulsion is an environmental hazard do not allow spills or leaks
of emulsion to enter sewers, drains or watercourses.
Persons handling and using cold-mix asphalt must be provided with and
wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Break up lumps of cold mix before use use mattock or similar implement
to break up set material and to pull to rear of tray or carrier for spreading.
Persons handling and using bitumen emulsions must be provided with and
wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Use mattock or similar implement to break and pull to rear of tray or carrier.
Avoid contact with kerosene or diesel when cleaning tools and equipment.
Eliminate heat sources and flames in area where tools are being cleaned.
Do not allow spills or leaks of kerosene or diesel to enter sewers, drains or
watercourses. Keep containers closed when not in use.
