Pakistan International Airlines started in 23rd October 1946 as orient airways and later on

Pakistan International Airlines corporation was launched and on 10th January 1955 PIA and
orient airways which was a private air company combine their assets and routes and new
Airline PIA was established. It helped them to expand their domestic and International routes.
Pakistan International Airline is the first Asian Airline with Boeing 707-321, a jet aircraft. It
helped PIA to further expand its international routes.
1959 period of Noor Khan as managing director of PIA is said to be golden period of PIA
because under his short leadership of 6 years PIA earned the status of world's leading edge
carrier. during 1990 airline industry suffered losses due to recession and Gulf War so as PIA,
so government considered privatization as a option for reduction in losses bored by airline but
due to unionization this was never put into action. Some non-core businesses were outsourced
which result in 87% of the shares with the government of Pakistan and 13% share with the
private parties.
There are two main competitors of PIA Airblue and Shaheen Airways, Airblue started its
operations in 20th may 2004 with head office in Islamabad. It was considered as the second
largest airline of Pakistan with growing domestic market share. It has also won the best
Pakistani airline award for year 2012. It has 18 fleets and it has achieved 61% passenger
traffic increase over2011-12. Shaheen Airways started its operations in december 1993, it is
considered as a first Pakistani private airline and Government of Pakistan has assignment it
the status of second National Carrier of Pakistan. It has 19 fleets including five airbus 320s
which provided it the edge over other airlines. It also has its maintenance company 'Shaheen
Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance Services.
Mission Statement of PIA is ''Employee teams will contribute towards making PIA a global
airline of choice: offering quality customer services and innovative products, participating in
global alliances, using state of the art technologies, ensuring cost-effective measures in
procurement and operations.
but this statement is not being followed by the employees because they are not motivated.

Mr. Tariq Kirmani:
He was recognized as specialist of management turnaround. Once completing his MBA he
joined Caltex oil company in 1996 which he worked for more than two decades. he had
international assignments throughout this period ,particularly in USA , Australia and middle
east government of Pakistan hired him in April 1999 as deputy managing director of PSO.
acknowledging his versatile management achievements in April 2005 he was called to
turnaround the national airline PIA.
Mr. Aijaz Haroon:
In May 2008 he took over as MD of PIA an ex pilot having a bachelors degree and flying
certified and experienced in flying fleets In PIA.
