Spring 2013

I am so proud to be a part of this inaugural

issue of Modern Luxurys Interiors California.
The entire state has so much to offer in terms
of design, architecture and inspiration for
your home, and were excited to combine
Angeleno Interiors and Riviera Interiors into
one new, gorgeous magazine.
In this first issue, our team of writers,
editors and photographers did an incredible
job of highlighting all aspects of design,
from residential interiors to architecture
and commercial spaces. You can thumb
through pages and find a Corona del Mar
barn-style abode in In House Home Lofted
Aspirations, seriously high design at The
Ritz-Carlton Residences, Lake Tahoe, in
In House Realty Peak Chic! or our cover
home, art collector Byron Meyers high-rise
penthouse overlooking the San Francisco
Bay (Artful Living).
Theyre all stunning examples of
the Golden States design scene. Another
fabulous example of our prowess:
WestWeek in Los Angeles. It seems
the whole city was focused on this
extraordinary event. Everyone descended
upon the Pacific Design Center for three
days of events, conferences and speeches.
Th is was my fi rst year participating and
I was honored to host and moderate the
final keynote panel, From Exotic Villas
to Designer Automobiles: Cultivating and
Catering to a World-Class Clientele. The
panel included luxury real estate broker
Mauricio Umansky, superyacht and estate
interior designer Yvonne Colacion, famed
Malibu architect Doug Burdge of Burdge
& Associates Architects Inc. and senior
designer for BMW DesignWorks USA
Nick Gronenthal. Holly Hunt hosted the
post-event reception, and the whole day
was exhilarating.

As if I didnt feel lucky enough to be

surrounded by those industry elite for the
lecture, I was also invited to WestWeeks
annual Stars of Design awards dinner,
where I had the privilege to sit with the
2013 honorees. During dinner, we received
a terrific surprise: the opportunity to attend
a private preview of Stefan Sagmeisters
new exhibit, The Happy Show, at MOCA
at the PDC. Its a must-see this summer
for anyone who loves interacting with art.
Another exhibition I cant wait to check out
is Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern
Architecture in L.A. at The Getty. If you
want the inside scoop, we give you a preview
in our In House Culture story The Need
for Structure.
In addition to these stunning California
homes, designers and design events, we
couldnt leave you wondering where to find
all this great home decor. So weve gathered
all the shopping scoop across the state in
In House Shops Make Room. We get a
look at Maria Barrys new Rancho Santa Fe
store, then head to the O.C. to check out
new offerings from Robert | Westley, Brown
Jordan and the Design Within Reach
flagship before ending up at Hudson Grace
in San Francisco.
You can count on Interiors California to
keep you posted on all the design happenings
across our beautiful state. In between issues,
if youre curious about upcoming events,
be sure to visit modernluxury.com/interiorscalifornia. Additionally, our smartphone
and iPad applications are available for
download any time youre craving a design
fi x. We hope you enjoy this relaunch as
much as we have had creating it, and if you
have any suggestions, ideas or just want to
tell us how great it looks, drop me a line at
jpolachek@modernluxury.com.

A Note From the

VP of Editorial
Spring 2013
BETH WEITZMAN

Talk about the arrivals of spring! Clipping

the heels of a new season is the launch of
Modern Luxurys Interiors Californiaa
fully refreshed intermixing that folds
the best of Angeleno Interiors and Riviera
Interiors into one new publication
highlighting the de rigueur interior style
of the entire Golden State.
Although interiors-focused, the
presentation of this new formatan
ambitious undertaking that not only
marks the magazines editorial ethos going
forward and captures a wide array of design
scenes statewideis also something of an
homage to Californias storied exteriors.
North to south, the states diverse slate of
milieusfrom arid desert and windswept
f latlands to wine-country estuary and
the snowy peaks of the High Sierra
inspire both emerging and established
design talents to translate these settings
into striking residential and commercial
spaces for all of us to enjoy. Although this
ambitious relaunch promises a much wider
reach than its predecessors, its goal remains
to showcase the manifestations of these
unique interior perspectives, products
and projects.
In this, I must say that weve succeeded.
Not only does this issue explore familiar
stomping grounds, such as the urbanscapes
of SoCal, it veers north to San Francisco
and travels the road further up to the
now-thawing Truckee, where, at The
Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Bay Areabased tastemaker Jay Jeffers turned his
wholly original eye to three custom show
homes now up for grabs at the hotels

newly introduced The Ritz-Carlton

Residences, Lake Tahoe in our story InHouse Realty Peak Chic! I think youll
find their truly individual looka natty
riff on traditional lodge stylea reflection
of the eclectic design inclinations of many
Californians. Count Tyler Dawson among
this group. Recently settled in Venice, the
interior-design star, whom House Beautiful
touted among their designers to watch,
is bringing San Francisco sensibilities to
the Southland with a slew of in-progress
design projects. Read all about this devoted
mix-and-matcher in Interior Monologue
The New Girl.
These are just two design darlings
making California a more beautiful place
to live. But you need not be a designer to
appreciate good taste. Take Cesar Millan,
who lets us peek into his abode in In-House
Home Cesars Palace, or Hollywood
elite couple Eric Gold and Marcy Kaplan,
who give us a view of their just-renovated
gorgeous oceanside home in our feature
Making Waves. Sharing the spotlight
with our features are projects in a few of
our other favorite Cali cities; among them a
white-washed abode in Newport Beach, an
artistic dream in San Diego and a high-rise
stunner in San Francisco.
In addition, we also bring you some
fabulous new hotel lobbies across the state,
present Fisher Weismans fi rst book and
take you inside the red carpet scene for
the best fetes in town.
So, yes, weve shed our skinbut it is
spring. What better time to arrive in style?

1) San Francisco-based writer Jennie Nunn

is a former editor at magazines such as 7x7
and Sunset. Nunn, a Los Angeles native, is a
contributing editor for Organic Spa Magazine
and 805 Living, and her work has appeared in
The San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco
magazine. This issue, she crafted a piece on
hotel lobby design and a feature on Byron
Meyers penthouse. Im so inspired by his
art collection and his spaceits a sanctuary
filled with his favorite objects, says Nunn.

4) Diane Dorrans Saeks is the best-selling

author of 22 books on design, travel and
architecture, including her most recent, Ann
Getty: Interior Style and Michael S. Smith:
Elements of Style. She is the noted founder of
the popular design blog The Style Saloniste
and wrote In House Travel Morocco Deco.
The Royal Mansour hotel offers a glimpse
into traditional Moroccan interior style and
the finest historic craftsmanship, she says. I
felt privileged to stay there. Pure escapism.

2 ) For this issue, features contributor

Andrew Myers hit the Cali coast to see an
oceanfront beach abode in Malibu. The
house had an abiding interest in space and
light, and the furniture and decorative
objects were treated almost as sculpture,
says Myers, whose work also appears in
other Modern Luxury publications as well
as Town & Country, Robb Report, Travel +
Leisure and Black Card Mag. Nevertheless,
the home remains comfortable.

5) Los Angeles-raised Jessica Sample was

previously the deputy photo editor at Travel
+ Leisure in New York. Her clients include
Food & Wine, Coastal Living, GQ, Sunset,
The Wall Street Journal, Angeleno and Deltas
Sky.Sample was recognized as one of PDNs
30 photographers to watch in 2013 and took
the portrait of Lynn Pries for In House Home
Lofted Aspirations I would love a house
like the one Lynn designed: open and airy
with those gorgeous rustic hardwood floors.

3) Melissa Valladares was born and raised

in Las Vegas and moved to Los Angeles to
pursue photography. She has won awards
from PDN and Communication Arts Photo
Annual and has shot for House Beautiful
and Womans Day. For this issue, she
photographed the portrait of Eric Gold and
Marcy Kaplan for Making Waves. They
told me the history of the house and walked
me through every room, she recalls. Their
home is absolutely stunning!

6) Joanne Furio is a Bay Area design writer

people and offbeat concepts, hence her
interest in exploring Cesar Millans home
for In House Home Cesars Palace. She
has also written forDwell and The New York

my dog, who, along with all the other dogs in
America, is apparently very spoiled.

If walls could talk, these would have a few things to say about the newest trends

Romanoff and starchitect David Rockwell. Their Groove-V collection ($55/

For once, its polite to stare. Then, after five years of R&D, Romanoffs Ajiro Vineyard collection ($100-$120/

wood on a paper backing, it can wrap columns or fit into corners with ease. Both will be on display at Pacific

Figuratively Speaking
Although born in Portland, Ore., figurative painter
Richard Diebenkorn cut what can only be considered
a highly prophetic figure further south. The Edward
Hopper-influenced artist played a major role in the
Bay Area figurative movement, enjoying particularly
productive years in Berkeley during the 50s and 60s.

Resto Redo
Studio Collective is turning one of L.A.s most iconic
restaurants into not one, but two, new concepts.
The big, plush, red leather booths were
always the most coveted seats at the
original Hamburger Hamlet on the
Sunset Strip, so when Adam Goldstein
of Studio Collective was tasked with
turning the space into a rustic-chic,
Tuscan-inspired restaurant for the
Innovative Dining Group (Sushi
Roku, BOA Steakhouse, Soleto), the
first thing people asked about were
the booths. They had their own
lore, Goldstein says. But the Hamlet
people stripped the place. There was
no opportunity to allude to what was
here before.
Instead, the new RivaBella is a
gorgeous open space with a retractable
roof, a patio strewn with creamcolored booths, dimly lit lanterns,
tiled floors, fireplaces, trees and other
greenery. It feels like youre in a villa

set somewhere along the Italian coast

or countryside. Theres even a brickwalled wine cave off to the side, which
serves as an extra dining room.
Next door, the design team is
creating an entirely separate Chinese
restaurant, Chi Lin, which has a
completely different vibe: sleeker,
darker. The hope is that theyll both
last as long as the Hamlet did.
To stand the test of time,
Goldstein says they looked to
handcrafted detailsfurniture
and things like tiebacks for the
draperynot trends. (Anything
that shows the touch of the human
hand.) Taking over a place that
lasted that long wasnt a direct
inspiration in terms of design, he
adds, but in terms of longevity for
sure. Lesley Balla

A DOGS LIFE
Cesar Millan at home
with his pitbull, Junior

When I see a white rug in the

master bedroom, I have to ask:
What were you thinking?

Im so disciplined about the dogs

always being clean before they
enter the house, it doesnt matter
what color the interiors are.
You also have a white
bedspread. Do the dogs sleep
with you?

Junior and Alfie sleep in my room,

but not on my bed. I dont like dog
hair on the bed. Thats my personal
space. They dont have to be on me
and next to me at that moment.
What attracted you to this
particular house?

When I walked in, it was like,

Welcome to your house.
Everything was in the right place.
There was the right color furniture,
the right flowers, the right frame,
the right desk. Its definitely my
style, even though I never had
white furniture in my life. As a
Mexican, Im more used to colors
like fuchsia or yellow or turquoise.
I never would have picked gray
walls, but I love them. Its as if
youre always in a meditation zone.
Does this house have dogfriendly materials?

Hardwood floors. Carpeting

creates more dirt and smell.

Cesars Palace
Paw prints are nowhere to be found in the Dog Whisperers pristine abode.

Fill in the blank. Your favorite

room is _____:

The garage. Like a typical guy, I go

there to fi x things and to work
with plants.

By Joanne Furio | Photography by Melissa Valladares

Since this house came already

furnished, what did you add to
make it more personal?

Of course someone who was on the iconic series Dog Whisperer would have a house that
speaks softly. Cesar Millan fell in love with the light interiors of his new 3,800-square-foot
Studio City homeand the fact that he didnt have to do a thing. The home came furnished,
with interiors by Yosef Aviv of SOHB. The inexhaustible Millan just wrapped up the season
finale of Nat Geo Wilds Leader of the Pack and published his sixth book, Cesar Millans Short
Guide to a Happy Dog ($22, National Geographic). Now touring with his live show, Millan took
time out to let us know how those interiors are faring with his five canine companions.

Crystals, orchids. Im always

bringing in new flowers. A huge
painting of Mayans, and, of
course, my dogs. When you
add an animal, they have an
amazing ability to make
everything look beautiful.

In their first book, decorators Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman conjure up

when the Bay area-based design rm fisher weisman comes up in conversation, san francisco
socials inevitably ask, have you seen their apartment on nob hill? now, 13 years after Jeffry
weisman and andrew fisher merged their individual practices, acionados can see images of
the glamorous pied--terre in a 1920s louis Xvi-style building where they live, as well as other
storied projects, in their rst book, Artful Decoration ($50, the monticelli press). weisman, who
grew up in encino and studied design and later business at stanford university before taking my
avocation and making it a vocation, says he seeks to create balance in rooms. fisher, who hails

COAST TO COAST
Ive got some amazing
new things in lighting,
and some upholstery
concepts that are going
to be revolutionary,
says designer Jim
Weinberg. Below: One
of Weinbergs finished
L.A. projects.

Living Large
Interiors mogul Jim Weinberg brings his turnkey
Liveable Lifestyles program to Los Angeles.
By Kate Abney | Photography by Troy Stains

After more than 30 years as a celebrity interior designer of choice (think

Ivanka Trump and Robert De Niro), Atlanta-based Jim Weinberg
(jimweinberglifestyles.com) is transporting his acclaimed Liveable Lifestyles
campaign, dubbed Hollywood Regency, to the thick of Los Angeles.
Making his rounds in the Hollywood of the South, Weinbergs clients
have included high-level executives and entertainment moguls from such
companies as The Home Depot, Coca-Cola, Tyler Perry Studios and the
Trump Organization. Among the highlights of his global CV: working on
personal friend Giorgio Armanis home dcor line Armani/Casa, becoming
the nations first importer of modular furniture and designing for Studio
54. After tracing an illustrious design career from Miami to Aspen to L.A.
to Atlanta, hes once again returned his gaze to the ablaze L.A. market,
with hopes to catch some of that heat.
Weinberg is in talks with several high-profile condominium developers,
including an ultraluxe high-rise on Wilshire Boulevard. For a lucky few tenants
(read Beverly Hills high-rollers with seven-figure mortgages), his custom
buildouts and furnishings will make the most of those sweeping city views.
Clients will choose from Liveable Lifestyles tony menu of turnkey

servicesnot just furniture, lighting and accessories, but they take care
of the details such as unique and customized towels and linens, too. Most
are Weinbergs own innovative, original creations, while the rest are the
products of carefully chosen partnerships with top-shelf SoCal vendors
(Holly Hunt, A. Rudin, Ebanista, for starters). Weinberg is also working
with blue-chip galleries to place works of fine art.
Weinbergs program promises to be especially popular with interstate
and international transplants, who descend on Tinseltown swiftly and
purposefully, not keen to meddle with tiresome, drawn-out decorating
plans. Put simply: If youre in the Liveable Lifestyles coterie, you dont
even have to think about the details.
What you shouldnt expect is the Jim Weinberg look. Because if he
has any single design signature, its the diverse spectrum of his portfolio,
which spans styles and periodstraditional to modern, maximalist to
minimalist. Im a chameleon, the designer says. There isnt a color,
shape or form Im attached to. Instead, Weinberg consistently tailors
his approach to clients, adapting to their unique ways of life and, most
importantly, how they want to be perceived. These days, its all about
the personal branda maxim public figures know to be paramount.
Considering hes just as renowned for his scrupulous commitment to
privacy and discretion, Weinbergs sure to be a shoo-in for the citys celeb
set. In the long term, he hopes to connect the flourishing fi lm industries
here and in Atlanta, becoming a touchstone for truly tailored homes from
coast to coast.

The Beverly Park Estate

Beverly Hills

L ocated within the prestigious, guard-gated enclave of Beverly Park, this stunning and secluded Italian Villa was built to the most exacting of standards to
create a grand, yet intimate, compound-Estate that perfectly unites Old World Tuscan charm with elegant modernity. Superior craftsmanship is apparent in

throughout. These ornate qualities, among many others such as imported limestone and Italian Travertine flooring, set the tone for the extraordinary scale
of the 7-bedroom, 13-bath residence, which boasts over 17,000 sq ft of living space and unparalleled California living. Warm, neutral earth tones throughout
create an inviting dcor that seamlessly transitions outside to the homes meticulously kept grounds, which feature over 2,000 sq ft of spacious loggias, pool
and cabana, and two-story guest house. An entertainers paradise, this Estate is equally worthy of entertaining heads of state, hosting charitable events or

Back for more, Pacific Standard Times newest initiative

finally gives Los Angeles architecture its comeuppance.
By Marissa Gluck

Last years Pacific Standard Time, a Getty-led collaboration with more than
60 local cultural institutions, mounted a nearly comprehensive celebration of
Los Angeles postwar art up until 1980, putting L.A.s art scene on the global
map. But it seemed like the citys rich architectural legacy was given short
shrift next to all the chatter about the work of artists Ed Ruscha and John
Baldessari. Thankfully, Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture
in L.A. (pacificstandardtimepresents.org) is a welcome sequel.
The initiative takes a look at the citys contributions to design, from its
massive freeways to kitschy coffee shops to the humble tract house. With 17
exhibitions and many more accompanying programs and events from April
through July, architecture enthusiasts can delve into the work of modernists
like Schindler and Neutra or todays starchitects like Frank Gehry and Thom
Mayne. A few dont-miss highlights and images youll see along the way:
The linchpin of the Gettys programming is the upcoming Overdrive:
L.A. Constructs the Future, 1940-1990, a massive survey of L.A.s urban
landscape, including its skyscrapers, shopping malls and streets, as well as its
diverse modern residences on exhibit. April 9-July 21

While PSTP spreads across the

city, the Gettys own exhibit is
the cornerstone of the initiative.
According to curators Wim
de Wit (left) and Christopher
J. Alexander, the shows goal
is similar to last years PST.
Architecture is a very important
part of the culture of this city.
We wanted to show what was
happening here in the 40s, 50s,
60s and beyond, says de Wit.
The Getty aims to uncover
lesser-known gems, like the work
of architect Claude Beelman.
Beelman designed many of
downtowns best buildings,
including the Superior Oil
Company building (now the
downtown Standard Hotel) and
the Eastern Columbia Building.
Theyre hidden in plain sight,
says Alexander. We drive by
them every day [and never
notice them].
The exhibits scope and
ambition is far-reaching,
embracing SoCals complexity.
Its not just a show of
architectural highlights,
says Alexander. Corporate
headquarters, oil refineries
and electrical transmission
towers are all worthy of
consideration. Were revealing
how L.A. became a lab for
architectural innovation and
experimentation. MG

The Call of Nature

Nature certainly calls at the Santa Lucia Preserve near the central coast of California.

For every homeowner who longs to integrate architecture

and landscape, there is a neighbor just as eager to pave over
the earth to erect an eyesore. Not at Santa Lucia Preserve
(santaluciapreserve.com), a private community just minutes
from Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur. The philosophy here
would make Frank Lloyd Wright proud.
The 20,000-acre preserve, nestled in the Santa Lucia
Mountains, looks more like a national park than a luxury
housing development, encompassing redwood forests, oak
savannas and native grasslands. Once parceled out as ranchos
under Central Californias Mexican land grants, the vast
swath was cobbled together in the 1850s by cattle baron
Bradley Sargent. When Santa Lucia Preserve founder Tom
Gray and his partners purchased the intact property in 1990,
they were only the fourth owners.
Their vision? Respect the biodiversity of the preserve in
perpetuity. Though 300 homesites dot the owner-governed
community, permanent conservation deeds have been placed
on 90 percent of the land. And when it comes to architecture,
treading lightly isnt an option; its an edict. Even the Tom
Fazio-designed golf course blends in effortlessly with its
stunning surroundings.
The families who choose to live here are active partners
in the protection of this land, explains Christina Fischer,
executive director of the Santa Lucia Conservancy, which has

describe owners as tree huggers, but they really understand
how theyll impact the natural environment.
A design review board assists owners with the
stringent guidelines. The preserve has drawn A-list talent,
from architecture firms such as Lake Flato and Feldman
Architecture to landscape legends Bernard Trainor +
Associates.
Jonathan Feldman was operating his fledgling firm out
of his basement when his parents bought a parcel in the Santa
Lucia Preserve for their second home. He convinced them to
let him have a go.
The site was extremely challenging, says Feldman, who
situated the modernist House Ocho he built into a hillside
to avoid razing an old oak grove. But the views are just
incredible. And luckily for me, I get to visit them often.

Corona del Mar, a charming seaside village in Newport

Beach, has long been fertile ground for razing original
cottages in favor of mini manses built to the zerolot-line. Which makes the modern-day barn raising
achieved by designer Lynn Pries on one of the enclaves
beloved flower streets all the more remarkable.
My client had always dreamed of living in a barn
house, says Pries. Shed lived by the beach for years,
but always yearned for a bit of Sun Valley [Idaho] here
on the coast.
Pries and her client have partnered on four homes in
the past 23 years, but this project proved to be the most
excitingand challengingof their collaborations to
date. When she and Dowers found an existing house
in Corona del Mar Village with just the bones they
needed, they pounced.

with a shingled exterior and exposed
interior walls, says Pries. It had bits of the barn theme
with the wood and rooms with high ceilings, big
windows and natural light.
Pries immediately set to work on both the
architecture and interior design fronts, committed to
repurposing the home instead of tearing it down. She
began by changing the front elevation to subtly evoke
the lines of a barnwith a bit more lanand used
gray-hued wood salvaged from corral posts to clad the
front faade. The next step was to further open up the
interior spaces of the home, which had undergone a
series of partial remodels.
The greatest challenge was coming up with a floor
plan that was workable, says Pries. Corona del Mar
lots are very narrow, and thatcoupled with the funky
previous remodelsmade it difficult to create the wide
open spaces and abundant natural light we wanted.
Spoiler alert: The challenge was surmounted and an
exciting modern barn was born. Pries created organic,
clean lines and spacious, airy barn-meets-loft interiors by
lightening the existing dark-stained wood interior walls,

Of all the welcoming rooms in the twobedroom main house and the one-bedroom

comfortably. Another crowd-pleaser is the
outdoor deck, which doubles as an alfresco living

LAKE TAHOE

Designer Jay Jeffers custom show homes for The Ritz-Carlton

Residences, Lake Tahoe, take mountain living to new heights
with no airs at all. By Jenn Thornton

Of the many intrigues that lured California interior

design talent Jay Jeffers (jeffersdesigngroup.com) to
helm the interiors for three new custom show homes at
the recently debuted The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Lake
Tahoe, was the opportunity to give classic alpine style a
playfully modern twist. Touts the noted San Francisco
tastemaker, This is not your grandmothers cabin.
Jeffers calls their look California mountain, a style
he describes as a balance of the urbane and the rustic,
conceptualized with Tahoes young, auent, designconscious clientele in mind, but only a select few will
call them home. Boasting elements tailored to the ski-in
lifestyle, these fully furnished, move-in-ready homes are
as comfortable as they are luxuriously low-maintenance,
their contemporary-cool interiors expressions of their
creators wildly individualized design ethos.
The playfully posh spaces join The Ritz-Carlton
Residences, Lake Tahoes collection of 23 exquisite
penthouses (two- to four-bedroom options, ranging from
1,554 to 3,407 square feet), all featuring spacious great
rooms with 20-foot ceilings, catering kitchens, private
home theaters, wine storage cellars and master bedrooms

with fireplaces. And, taking advantage of the resorts

midpoint position up Northstar Mountain, where it sits
in regal repose, the residences boast magnificent views of
its premier peak, plus majestic Mount Rose and Martis
Valley vistas.
Refining the imaginary, Jeffers show homes reflect
exquisite whimsy not typically associated with The RitzCarlton, which, historically, has always attracted an older
crowd. But as Jeffers appointment proves, the luxury
brand is taking a shine to the younger, style-savvy seta
new, lower-key breed with modern tastes. But would a
marriage between a brand with traditionally conservative
leanings and a tastemaker celebrated for his curious,
eclectic connoisseurship produce a project satisfactory
to both parties? One look at these fresh spaces ends any
lingering debate.
Having the opportunity to put my own spin on
[The] Ritz-Carlton, a revered luxury brand, was truly
exciting, notes Jeffers. It was a fantastic experiencethe
new owners of the Residences have a true appreciation for
individualized design, and encouraged me to create very
singular spaces.

COnteMPOrary COOl
From top: Jay Jeffers played with
texture to give the spaces a rich
patina. Modern chandeliers by
apparatus illuminate a curated
collection of furnishings and
accessories, like blackened,
charred-wood stools by bay-area
artist Martha Sturdy and a custom
rug by Merida; HD buttercup wing
chairs and an Organic Modernism
buffet gives the dining room a boost.

I think the mix of

furnishings, accessories
and artwork in the homes
instantly give you that
collected feel.
With ownerships confidence, Jeffers set about
incubating interiors for the 2,363-square-foot (fourbedroom/four-bath) and 1,863-square-foot (threebedroom/three-bath) spaces, plus a larger penthouse
revealed last month. Creating a new design vernacular,
Jeffers took elegance out for a kicky spin, stamping
the homes with his unmistakable style fingerprint
think creativity, bespoke details and elements of the
unexpected. My goal for a home is for it to feel as if it
has been collected over time, he explains. I think the
mix of furnishings, accessories and artwork in the homes
instantly give you that collected feel.
The designers recipe for curating each spacetwo
parts comfort, one part whimsy, one part elegance and a
dash of chictakes shape in a color palette of taupe and
charcoal gray that unites the rooms, with complementary
shades of green, blue and persimmon added to recall
summers in Lake Tahoe. Providing balance to the organic
and industrial patina are textures like reclaimed wood,
boiled wool, cashmere and steel, fashioned in surprising
waysa white-oak bed with metal detailing mingles with
a reclaimed-wood club chair, for example. Even design
challenges, such as the roofline creating one-sided angles
in the rooms, were creatively circumvented, with Jeffers
transforming said angles with interesting wallpaper
treatments and stunning art. It turned an obstacle into
an advantage, he says.
Further personalizing each space, Jeffers turned to
the wealth of interior trimmings housed in his handsome
San Francisco emporium, Cavalier. Plucking a menagerie

of finds sourced worldwide from this treasure trove

allowed the tastemaker to put the finishing touches on
each of the homes layered looks.
This sense of inspired design echoes throughout
The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, which lures trendsetting
types because it is setting trends, too. As the brands first
property to earn LEED certification status from the U.S.
Green Building Council, not only is it a sustainable sendup of chic, its the result of rigorous building standards
and smart architecture, the heart of which is an octagonal
lobby linking a collection of pavilions.
Sustainability has its privileges, especially for The
Ritz-Carlton Residence owners, who enjoy membership
in an exclusive club that comes with priority access to
hotel highlights like the Highlands Spa; signature eatery
Manzanita by top toque Traci Des Jardins; and countless
other services and amenities. And just outside the door are
3,170 acres of skiable terrain, not to mention the worlds
only Burton Snowboard Academy and a gondola that
zips down to the shops, eateries and entertainment at the
Village at Northstar.
After previewing Jeffers three show homes, its quite
natural to ask for his favoriteand quite like him not to
supply a straightforward response. Whichever one Im
standing in at the time, he allows. I never play favorites
with my children.

The delicate restraint of the restaurants dishes is
evident in the interiors, with an edited palette of materials
(stone, wood and metal) based on the wabi-sabi principles

Morocco Deco
Secluded behind ancient Marrakech
walls, the palatial Royal Mansour offers
guests precious luxuries: privacy, fantasy
and endless discovery of design.
By Diane Dorrans Saeks

Marrakech is like a lavish watercolor painting by

Delacroix: Bright, sun-struck gardens blooming with
magenta bougainvillea, punctuated by flickering palm
trees and encircled by 16th century terra-cotta ramparts.
In the high sun of summer, its a hallucinatory dream
where the polished Paris-meets-Morocco style of Yves
Saint Laurent and his coterie linger on at their most
glamorous. Now the Royal Mansour (royalmansour.com)
oers a new enchantment.
The historic silver Daimler car glides with exquisite
grace past the hotels security gate and turns toward a
long, open stretch of private drive lined with shimmering
palm trees. In the distance awaits the arched grand portal
and stunning architecture of the Royal Mansour.
A passenger could be forgiven for asking the whitegloved, liveried chaueur to seize the moment and let it
rip. But this handsome driver proceeds at a stately pace,
just as he does when hes driving the king of Morocco,
who owns the property.
Anticipation is such sweet pleasure.
The car pulls up, luggage is whisked out of sight,
and suddenly I am in another world, far from the jangle
and clamor of the nearby ancient medina of Marrakech.
Exploring the centuries-old souks (markets) of the city
is for another day. For now, I am transported to the truly
palatial style of Morocco. The grandiose entryway leads to
an open-air courtyard centered on fountains and a pool.
Ill soon learn that the lovely space
is ethereally lit at night by hanging

Spring 2013

The Royal Mansour, discreet and private, has

53 Moroccan riads (residences), each one true to the
centuries-old Moroccan style and configured around a
central, open-air courtyard. Built into the medina wall,
the expansive property covers more than 8 acres.
We wanted the experience here to be like staying
in a place with a history rather than staying in a hotel,
said Nicolas Papamiltiades of 3BIS, architect for Royal
Mansour. Its more like entering a stately home than a
hotel. There are none of the usual hotel codes, including
no check-in desk.
We stayed true to spaces that obey the rules of
Moroccan architecture, solidly anchoring the project in
its setting and forging its credibility, said Papamiltiades.
Guests are welcomed and then taken directly to their
private accommodations in the individual riads.
Riads are the traditional, incredibly ornamented
residences of the country (with high walls to keep out
desert sands, marauders and prying eyes), with a living
area and, in some cases, a dining room. Each riad (ranging
from 1,400 square feet to 19,375 square feet) showcases
the countrys classical design, in addition to artwork
from more than 80 contemporary native artists, also on
display throughout the property. The second floor houses
bedrooms that overlook the private courtyard below, while
roof terraces with sun beds and private pools provide
stunning views of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains.
Interior gathering spaces like Bar are furnished
with antique mirrors, and the cozy, jewel-box-like Cigar
Lounge provides an inviting space in which to relax.
The Library is stocked with walls of books on Moroccan

culture, science and art. It also features a unique retractable

ceiling and telescope, giving guests the chance to scan an
extraordinary view of the Marrakech night sky.
The Spa is equally indulgent. Its dramatically
modern with glossy white geometric screens inspired by
traditional Moorish styles, but reinvented in an abstract
fashion that gives a new look to the classic hammam
(Turkish baths). Its a dream of all-white dcor that gives
all who see it a serene, almost floating feeling.
Afterward, theres a cool sip of Moroccan mint tea
and its time to rest, meditate and consider the great good
fortune of spending a few blissful days among the elegant
walls at the Royal Mansour.
Palatial, indeed.

Making Waves
A Hollywood power couple joins forces
with a dynamic design duo to create the
iconic beach house.
By Andrew Myers

Bringing the beach indoors poses much inspiration

(the positive ions!) and many aesthetic opportunities
(the blues of sea and sky!). Then there are the mixed
blessings, drop-ins that in starry Malibu might mean a
well-fed seagull perched aggressively atop pricey woven
acrylic patio furniture.
For Los Angeles designers Elizabeth Barondes and
Kelly Morris, who launched Barondes Morris Design
in 2008, its all part of riding creativitys great wave,
navigating a projects particular riptides while ensuring
that a clients needs and wants arent merely met,
but exceeded.

with the neighborhood kids.
The house now features new entertainment industry
owners: film, TV and musical producer Eric Gold and
Marcy Kaplan, his actress, writer and producer wife, who
had long aspired to produce a dream homeKaplans
passion for design stretches back to her early days
waitressing in L.A., when she formed a fast friendship
with designer and TV personality Kelly Wearstler. I
will never forget the feeling that came over me, walking
through this home, remembers Kaplan. I turned to
Eric and said, This is the perfect beach house.
Having happily collaborated with Barondes and
Morris on smaller projects such as their young twin
girls bedrooms in their Beverly Hills house, Gold and
Kaplan were eager to cast the designers as beach home
co-producers, and to address the big picture. The prior

renovation did not meet the style of architecture or the

period, says Barondes, explaining that while she and
Morris looked forward to restoring the houses original
assets, neither Kaplan nor Gold were interested in
midcentury orthodoxy. We took the house down to
its studs, gutting the kitchen, bathrooms and damaged
tiled floors. Likewise, a long series of French doors
facing the beach in the main floors large multipurpose
space was replaced by a massive sliding Fleetwood
telescoping systemto bring the outside in, naturally,
says Barondes. We wanted to play up the biggest visual
asset, the art in the backyard: the ocean.
As for the original paneling covering the walls
and ceilings throughout the house? Not only was it
salvaged and restored, it was also augmentedliterally
in the guesthouse, where paneling was extended to the
closet doors to make them essentially disappear, says

composed of new, hand-selected bleached walnut.
Our intention was to mirror their width with the wall
paneling to create a seamless box effect, says Barondes,
explaining that in terms of color and finish the goal
was an effortless tone mimicking the sandy beach.
Location integration!
That seamless box was also a perfect platform
for the homes fine and decorative arts, such as the
metal sculpture by Curtis Jere in the dining area, the
whimsical folded palm-leaf flamingos flanking doors
to the courtyard and the Austrian pendant lights from
the 1930s near the Jere. It was also an ideal backdrop
to set off their contemporary furniture: Golds beloved
chaise floating in the main room, its shape mimicking
a wave; the dining rooms driftwood-evoking table
from Dao; and the sofa and armchairs surrounding the
fireplace, pieces previously owned by Kaplan and Gold
that Barondes and Morris modified in league with their
network of local artisans. Our goal was to allow the
shapes and textures to play amongst themselveswe
like the sun-bleached colors punctuated with pigmented
bursts, says Morris, noting that while the fabrics might
look like fine cottons and linens, theyre actually durable
indoor-outdoor synthetics like Sunbrella.
The end result for Kaplan and Gold? A blockbuster
abode that reflects their taste and lifestyle. We have a
physical reaction to the house, says Kaplan. It sort of
slows down our heart rates upon entry.

In Living Color
With a few slick moves, a century-old
dwelling in San Diego achieves an
artful artifice.
By Ann Jarmusch
Photography by Ethan Pines

For two San Diego contemporary art collectors, living with

their accumulated works has become an art unto itself.
A pediatrician and a financial executive, the couple
takes special pleasure in supporting their citys talented
artists. The pair lives with their children in a 102-yearold, Arts and Crafts-style homea local historic
landmarkin the charming older neighborhood of
Bankers Hill. For several years, the two-story interior
has been undergoing an unusual transformation
that respects the old, but still welcomes the new. No
architectural elements were removed and none added,
yet the deliberate alterations are both subtle and striking.
Cross the venerable threshold of this redwood,
fieldstone and cedar shake house and you enter a rarefied
realm. The walls and woodwork are painted a stark
shade of white developed by architect Le Corbusier (via
the Swiss company kt.Color), while the original, white
oak floors have been bleached and stained light gray.
Against this neutral backdrop, colorful art, custom

spark virtual fireworks.
Beyond the vibrant hues indoors, the contrast
between inside and out is also positively stunningand
theres an intriguing logic to it. While our house was
built in 1911, like many Arts and Crafts homes it has
a modern aesthetic with its symmetry and simplicity,
explains the owner. Rather than dark moldings, ours
was built with white enameled wood details and lots
of large windows that provide a bright, open interior.
Therefore, the house lends itself well to contemporary
art and furniture [as opposed to period pieces], while still
creating an interesting dynamic between old and new.
Architect and furniture designer Jennifer Luce,
who leads Luce et Studio Architects two offices in La

Jolla and Los Angeles, helped heighten that dynamic

through what she calls artistic interventions.
We made no structural changes, yet every room
in the house has been affected and shifted regarding
ones understanding of space, the connection between
spaces and the light, Luce says.
The result is not quite as abstract as it sounds. As
Luce observes, the results are richly layered or peeled
back and highly personal. Shes mindful of the historic
elements and a previous renovation for the owners by
San Diego architect Mark Lee Christopher.
Luces ongoing collaboration with the couple
involves choreographing the art collection (which is
still growing) and complementing it by commissioning

Roman de Salvo). In the dining room, beneath a glasstopped Carlo Scarpa table, lies a brilliant yellow felt
rug made by Dutch artisan Claudy Jongstra from
sheeps wool in the Netherlands.
We looked at the furnishings in the same way
as the quality of the artwork and sought out designers
and craftsmen who are pushing boundaries, Luce says.
Shes known for another essential ingredient found in
this home: sumptuous combinations of materials that
feel as good as they look.
The cantilevered sideboard Luce designed for a
dining room wall combines layers of acrylic, wood
(including a specimen from a beloved oak tree
that died) and hidden writing, all of which convey
this close-knit familys story as told to Luce in

interviews. Furthermore, the sideboard is based on a

series of furniture Luce designed for the Museum of
Contemporary Art San Diego.
A vivid palette is another imperative in the homes
heady mix. We consider light and color to be very
important to our quality of life. Living in a house with
vibrant color gives us a sense of joy and playfulness,
shares one of the owners.
More surprise interventions include bolting a
steel plate to a fireplace surround that long ago lost
its original tiles and adding a stainless steel and resin
ladder so the family can enjoy rooftop views of San
Diego Bay.
Despite its early 20th century origins, the whole
house now vibrates for a new millennium with what
Luce calls thoughtful compositions to be lived in.
How fantastically futuristic.

Artful Living
A prominent interior designer turns one
established art collectors high rise
space into a modern, museumlike abode.
By Jennie Nunn
Photography by Eric Piasecki

For interior designer Michael Booth, co-founder of

San Francisco-based firm BAMO, the backstory on
working with real estate developer and art collector
Byron Meyer to transform a vacant, two-bedroom,
3,300-square-foot penthouse in SoMas Millennium
Tower into a gallery-inspired space is based upon two
things: a trip to Indiana and shared history.
After all, Booth (who has fashioned interiors of
hotels from the Rosewood Sand Hill in Palo Alto and
Four Seasons Hualalai, as well as private residences
in Napa, Carmel and Pebble Beach) had already
teamed up with Meyer to outfit his Stanley Saitowitzdesigned weekend country home in Sonoma a few
years earlier. Hes an incredibly savvy art collector
and world traveler, and we just got along right off the
bat, became close friends and have the same taste, says
Booth, who also accompanied Meyer, a past member of
the Board of Trustees of the San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art, on several art trips, including a visit to the
iconic J. Irwin Miller House in Columbus, Indiana,

We always talked about [the J. irwin Miller house] over the years and
how Byron wished he had a house like it. The Millenium penthouse was
his to design from scratch, so we sought to create a white, gallerylike
space that felt like a museum.
in 1999. Its such an unusual house with beautiful,
custom-designed fabrics, and that really struck us and
reinvigorated my passion for modernism. We always
talked about [the J. Irwin Miller house) over the years
and how Byron wished he had a house like it. The
Millennium penthouse was his to design from scratch,
so we sought to create a white, gallerylike space that
felt like a museum.
With Meyers large art, photography and
sculpture collection, along with furnishings from his
five-bedroom primary residence designed by Michael
Taylor in Russian Hill, they had to think outside the
box and edit. Going from a five-bedroom house with
a full-on living room to a two-bedroom apartment, he

needed help on what should stay and what had to go,

so it forced us to be inventive with the furniture, says
Booth, who layered the space with nods to Ludwig
Mies van der Rohe and Alexander Girard. He also
had a huge collection of catalogues from nearly every
art show hed ever been to and oversized art books, so
we created built-ins throughout the space.
Beginning with an empty canvas (Meyer was one
of the towers early buyers), the duo, along with lead
designer Billy Quimby, chose a bright white palette
paired with a cerused oak floor to serve as a backdrop for
artwork including pieces by Agnes Martin, Elizabeth
Peyton, Stephen de Staebler and Jeff Koons, and
delicately installed massive paintings and sculptures.

spring 2013

| 93

We wanted to take the all-white to a certain point, but

we wanted the art to drive it, adds Booth. To ensure
lighting for each piece was just right, they enlisted the
help of lighting consulting firm Fisher Marantz Stone
(FMS), who work on lighting for museum exhibitions.
BAMO designated a core gallery wall painted a shade
of cobalt for more than 30 photographs, all framed
with white matte, by artists such as Hiroshi Sugimoto
and Henri Cartier-Bresson. We painted it this deep,
deep blue to contrast with the white palette and warm
wood in the space. We wanted to give it a dark color
so the art would pop, says Booth. In the living room,
a Moraine sofa by architect Zaha Hadid is paired with
a geometric-printed emerald green, white and black rug
by The Rug Company; three massive travertine blocks
that double as end tables; and a sofa by Michael Taylor
reupholstered in Gretchen Bellinger blue silk velvet.

94 |

spring 2013

The rug is a very bold gesture and we obsessed about

whether to use it or not, but it gives it this big hint of
sexy color in the room, says Booth. The dining room
is another mix of old and new finds with a pedestal
dining table by Michael Taylor topped with a new
lacquer slab and flanked by a giant painting by Philip
Guston, while the master bedroom boasts an oversized,
sandblasted wooden sculptural tree trunk by Michael
Taylor and a silk rug by Tai Ping.
Now, after the 15-month transformation, its
clear Meyer is right at home in his museumlike
artists retreat. He hosted a reception and between
the artwork and views, everyone had an ooh and aah
experience being there, says Booth of the serene space
with views of the Golden Gate and Bay bridges. Its
exactly what he wanted it to be. I joke that I could live
here, and if I say that, it means I really love it.

The New Girl

Tastemaker Tyler Dawson brings San Fran chic to SoCal.
By Jenn Thornton | Photography by Tim Melideo

TRADING SPACES
Tyler Dawson in her
new Venice digs

Whats old is new again for interior-designerabout-town Tyler Dawson, who is planting
her flag in SoCal after spending five years
in San Francisco. While there, she launched
Tyler Dawson Design (tylerdawsondesign.com)
and helmed projects that put shelter mags like
House Beautiful on notice.
Donning her DIY hat, Dawson
repurposed furniture from her San Francisco
abode to freshen up her new nest in Venice.
The challenge is that this place is completely
differentarchitecturally, environmentally
than our SF home, she confesses. Pieces
that looked perfectly natural there feel fussy
in Venice. Nothing a little paint cant fix.
Dawson is using the interior cure-all to
tie design elements together in a new way,
incorporating contemporary art pieces and
lightweight, natural textiles like linen and
sisal to achieve what she dubs a more beachsuitable vibe.
Adapting is something Dawson knows
innately, having shuttled between Northern
and Southern California most of her life.
She picked up her love of decorating from
her maternal forebears, and an appreciation
for construction from their paternal
counterpartsa storybook footnote for
someone who built her own business, if
somewhat circuitously. Dawson worked for
Natasha Esch Design in L.A. before defecting
to New York, where she studied art history
at Columbia University, then graduated to
acclaim in the Windy City.
Now, Dawson brings her moody and
layered aesthetic to SoCal. In Venice, which
Dawson describes as easygoing, but with an
edge, the tastemaker has found the ultimate
incubator for her eclectic design ethos, which
calls for mixing styles and eras with found
objects, the use of metallic accents, and
unusual color and pattern combinations.
Although a ladylike apartment in
Beverly Hills, a family residence in Studio
City and her own at-home studio at the beach
are all on Dawsons to-do docket, shes got
projects worldwide, too. Im working on
getting an inventory of vintage furniture,
lighting and home accessories up and
running on One Kings Lane.
