The Effect of Giving Too Much Homework to High School Students
Having a lot of homework does not help students understand the lesson and
also waste their studying time. The purpose of this research is to argue that giving too
much homework does not help high school students understand the lesson. The
importance of this research is to support the argument that giving too much
homework does not help high school student understand the lesson. It is also for
teacher to realize the disadvantages of overloaded homework. I have researched four
references. Sandra Levy in her research entitled Is too much homework bad for kids
explained that more homework can cause physical problems. The researchers
reviewed that average about 3.7 hours of homework each night. Students who did
more hour of homework seem to be more stress and lack of balance in their life.
Kamala Nair in her article entitled Too much homework negatively affect kids
explained that homework overload affect their family life. Some kids can not even
have dinner with their family. Some members in their family also argue about
students homework. The New Kids Center also reported that too much homework
can reduce social interaction. Children who do lots of homework can decrease chance
to talk to others. Finally, Hannah in her article also explained that too much
homework disturb life balance. Students who have too much homework will not be
able to balance their life and do other activities such as exercising.

What is Homework?
Nowadays students in a school need to do homework. Homework is an
assignment from their teacher to be done at home. There are many reasons that school
give student homeworks for practicing the lesson after class outside the classroom . It
also provides chance for supporting of lesson learned during class time to develop
their research skills. There are many types of homework such as completion. It is
anything that not completed in class. Practice is a review and support of material in
class. Preparation is home preparation for next days class work. The time spent on
doing homework varies from student 13 years old. Each country Canada has 65,
France has 44, United states has 61, Korea has 56, Switzerland has 79 and Thailand
has 70. As you see Thailand has almost the highest number of hours in doing
homework. Therefore students in Thailand can develop a lot of stress.
Homework Overload
Homework overload means when majority teachers in school give students a
lot of homework at the same time. Some students are given four subjects of
homework a day and have to do them overnight. Homework overload can affect
students in so many ways. The teacher always says that homework assignments are
for practicing and for students own benefits. Students seem to get used to having
homework every single day since at least 2 nd grade. Sometimes if a teacher give
students too much homework they might be overloaded and that is not a good point of
being a student. All the work that students have done so far sometimes doesnt let
them rest and have their own activities such as exercising having time with family or
playing music. It should be something that more useful than wasting time on pointless
homework. Statistics show that overloaded homework can make students nervous and
affect their responsibilities. Too much homework is a very serious issues nowadays

because students who get too much homework tend to stay up later to finish it which
will affect their performance on the next day of school. There are also statistics that
show that students can get benefit from homework but not an overloaded homework.
It can help student understand more about the topic even help their grade if complete
it.
Students with Overloaded Homework
Students with overloaded homework will not be able to balance their life.
Almost all teachers in school give us homework according to their schedules and do
not realize that some students dont have enough time to finish all of the homeworks.
An Example in the case at MUIDS where students have to study for six periods a day
and teachers give students homework in four subjects. Some students will not be able
to manage their time to finish all of them. Playing sports and being in clubs or other
activities remain important to students lives. When students go back home from
school they have learned six periods all day long, they should be able to enjoy the
beneficial activities that they would like to do instead of being stressed out for the
amount of homework. According to study of Molie K. Galloway it claimed that 67.8%
of students have been asked what caused the major stress in their lives. They
responded that school work, and also homework where 65% of students said that they
were always or very often stressed because of school works. For that reason it means
that most of students are stressed only because of school work. Teachers may not
realize it. Therefore it is hard for students to balance their life either not only to
complete all of the homework but also have to get a good grade and good activities.
Conclusion
The purpose of this research report is to find out whether giving too much
homework really helps students understand the lesson. This research report concluded

that giving overload homework has never good for students. It also doesnt help
students understand the lesson. I recommend futher research about the kinds of
homework given to high school students.
