PileAXL 2014 A program for single piles under axial loading

PileAXL 2014 is a program that analyzes the

behaviour of single piles under axial loading applied
at the pile head (compression or tension) for both
onshore and offshore engineering problems. Both
bored piles and driven piles can be analyzed by the
program. The program computes the ultimate and
factored pile capacities for a range of pile lengths
together with the short-term pile settlement curve for
a specific pile length.

PileAXL 2014 is a quick and simple tool to

determine the pile capacity and settlement under
the axial load. It is a must-have tool for pile
design and analysis by both structural and
geotechnical engineers.

Various analysis methods are adopted in PileAXL

2014 to analyze ultimate shaft resistance, ultimate
end bearing resistance and total axial capacity of
piles as summarized in the table above.

Features and Benefits

1. Standard window-style dialogs, push buttons,
drop menus, list boxes, EXCEL-like data grid cells,
slide bars, radio buttons, check boxes and toolbars
can be accessed in the program;
2. Automatic generation of nonlinear t-z and q-w
curves for various soil types such as cohesive soils,
cohesionless soils and rocks according to the pile
installation type. Generated t-z curves for each node
and q-w curve at the pile toe location can be viewed,
copied and printed. No need to specify the node
locations before the analysis in order to access the tz and q-w curve information. Once the analysis is
completed successfully, t-z curves for all the nodes
and q-w curve at the pile toe location are
automatically available to the user. This is very
useful when the user needs to use the t-z or q-w
curves for input as spring values into other structural
models;

3. Resistance factors can be specified by the users

for ultimate shaft resistance (compression), ultimate
shaft resistance (tension) and ultimate end bearing
resistance for the design to be consistent with the
current widely-used limit state design concept.
Additional reduction factor can be applied to the
internal shaft resistance of the unplugged steel pipe
section to consider the effects of driving disturbance.
Ultimate end bearing resistance within the layered
soils is determined by Meyerhof (1976)s approach
with considering the influence effects of upper and
lower soil layers;

delete, insert or modify the input parameters for

each soil layer according to the material type.
Important changes in the input data will be
automatically updated in the graph on the main
program once the input dialog is closed;

4. Different pile section types such as circular

section, rectangular section, steel H-section, steel
pipe section, octagonal section and user-defined
section can be selected by the user. Plugged and
unplugged options are available to the steel Hsection and steel pipe section;
8. Load-settlement curve can be generated by the
program for the specified axial loading at the pile
head. Relevant information such as ultimate shaft
resistance, ultimate end bearing resistance and
ultimate axial pile capacity are shown on the loadsettlement curve graph for the specified pile length
for quick reference.

5. Detailed analysis results are presented in EXCELlike format and can be easily selected and copied
into the third-party program such as EXCEL for
further processing;
6. An interactive graphical presentation of pile and
soil layer geometry is provided at the program main
interface. Important changes in the input data such
as pile length, the number of soil layers, soil layer
name, soil layer thickness, soil layer color, analysis
model type, water table position, certain soil
parameters and pile loading will be automatically
updated in the graph. It is very convenient for the
user to visually view the input change;
7. Innovative soil layer and parameter input dialog is
provided to help the user to enter the input data
more easily and smoothly. The user can easily add,

9. A well-designed result output dialog is provided

for the user to view all the relevant results
graphically. Switching among different results is very
straightforward. All the analysis results along the pile
length are presented together with the soil layer
geometry. Therefore, the analysis results within each
soil layer can be viewed by the user conveniently
from the graph of the results.
10. Comprehensive analysis options for offshore pile
foundation such as ICP method, Fugro Method and
UWA method are available in PileAXL 2014.
