11th Sarawak Lasallian Convention 2015 Report

On the 9th of June, the Sarawak Lasallian Convention started off with registration for the
36 delegates involved in the convention. After a short icebreaker and expectation check.
The delegates settled down for a tea break and then proceeded to games. The game were
designed for team versus team competition. These games taught our participants the
many subliminal trait that a lasallian should possess. After all the fun with the games, the
delegates went on to wash up in preparation for Session 1.
During session 1, a 45-minute play was acted out by our fellow lasallians with John
James playing the role of John Baptist De La Salle. The play was set to potray the life of
La Salle from when he was born in Reims, France to his death in 1719. The objective of
the play was to introduce the youth to the many struggles and obstacles faced by La Salle
and how he overcame them to become the man he is known for today. La Salle was
portrayed in a very realistic manner that allowed the audience to develop a relationship
with him for his humanity and inspire them with his determination.
After the session, the delegates were introduced to reflection. During the reflection, the
delegates were asked to think about their day and what they have learnt through the
activites carried out on the first day. They were also asked to reflect on themselves the
many traits of La Salle and how they could incorporate it into their lives. After a light
supper, the delegates settled in to their dorms to rest for the next day.
During the start of every day during the convention, delegates carried out a short
reflection to kick start their day on a positive route. After breakfast, there was a sing-along session where the delegates sang The Man In The Mirror by Michael Jackson. This
song was sung in conjunction with what we have learned in the reflection and to ask
ourselves about the choices we make in our life.
Next, session 2 was carried out themed I-Realities of La Salle. As to relate to the
delegates, the I-Realities chosen by the delegates to focus on were school, society and
family. The delegates were separated into groups where they each discussed the
responsibilities as a son/daughter in a family such as listening to their parents and doing
house chores. School-wise, the delegates talked about the responsibility as a student to
study hard to achieve success and to follow the school rules imposed by the school. As
for society, there were many discussions about the importance of preserving our planet as
well as helping out each other.
Session 3 chose to focus on the leadership aspect of La Salle. The delegates talked
about the many characteristics of a great leader such as La Salle. Among the many noted
ones were motivator, rational, risk taker, responsible and understanding. It was also put
forth that the definition of a leader was Lead, Explore, Attitude, Determination, Example,
Responsible. Delegates were also asked to chose a symbol for leadership. One such group
suggested a crab as a crab does not stand in front of its young but rather side by side to
lead the way - as a leader should.

After a lunch, delegates participated in two workshops focusing on self development.

One of the workshop was focused on expressing your emotions and the power of action.
A script was read out and delegates were asked to act it out. Many delegates discovered
the true power of actions and skills also while getting a chance to brush up their acting
skills. The other workshop was focused on refection and conveying our feelings through
our actions. Delegates were each asked to mirror each other and somehow a bond was
formed between them.
There after, delegates gathered in the hall for session 4. Session 4 was activity-based.
Delegates were put into 3 teams and set forth to complete various task with the theme as
team-building. During the aftermath of the activity, delegates talked about what helped
them to succeed and what brought them down during the course of the activity. Everyone
agreed that the key to success was teamwork and to rely on others for mental and
physical support. It was also the creativity that led delegates to figure out the soultion to
the tasks at hand. Day 2 ended with a reflection where each delegate was asked to think
about their day and what they have learnt during that day.
As per usual, day 3 started off with a morning reflection where delegates took out time
to meditate. After a short sing-a-long, session 5 started which themed around choices. It
is believed that in life we all have choices. Most times people make the conscious choice
to choose the easier option not based on what is morally good or bad. This activity-based
session chose to explore why people chose to be negative and jeer at others instead of
helping them out. It also explore the unspoken trust between two people and the
relationship we have with others.
During the workshop sessions, delegates were separated into two large to prepare for
their workshop presentation involving what they have learned throughout the 3 days of
camp and from the sessions as well. Each team presented an amazing play inspired by
what they have learned during the past few days. The convention closed with a touching
closing ceremony. During the ceremony, a reflection was held as well to remind and give
time to the delegates to ponder upon the lessons that they have learnt that day. The
convention ended the next day where delegates cleaned up the school and cleared up any
mess left behind.
From a personal point of view, this camp taught me a lot about the lasallian culture and
the lasallian spirit that lives on in every lasallian. I learnt many things about myself and
made many new friends within my school that I would have otherwise not interacted
with. I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers and organizing team for
organizing this convention and I hope that many future lasallians get this opportunity to
join this convention in the future.
