Unit: Weather

Topic: Air pressure/ barometer

Time Allotted: 75 minutes

Preparation:
Purpose/rationale for the lesson: Why are you teaching this lesson? To introduce
how air pressure relates to our life and to talk about how it is that we can measure
air pressure.
What curriculum framing question or essential question is addressed in this lesson?

How does air pressure affect our life? How is air pressure created? How can we measure air
pressure?
What district, state or national curriculum standard(s) will you target in this lesson?

EL.02.WR.26 Understand the purposes of various reference materials.

EL.02.RE.24 Interpret information from diagrams, charts, and graphs.
2.3S.1 Observe, measure, and record properties of objects and substances
using simple tools to gather data and extend the senses.
Prior Knowledge/Background Information: What concepts and/or skills do students
need to have in order to be successful in this lesson? To have an understanding that
air pressure is around us.
Learning Objectives for the lesson: What do you expect learners to know and/or
accomplish as a result of participating in this lesson? How are you incorporating
higher order thinking? The intended learning outcomes are for students to learn about

importances of air pressure and to create a barometer that they will utilize to collect data.
Key Concept(s): What concepts (related to content and/or process) will
students encounter as a result of this lesson? Air pressure, barometer, scale

and Weight.

Key Question(s): What questions/prompts will you build into your lesson plan to
foster student engagement and higher order thinking? How does air pressure affect
our life and how can we measure it?
Materials/Resources Needed:

ruler
PowerPoint
big white paper
An empty coffee cans
large balloons
large rubber bands
pins
Glues
Straws
Paper

What appropriate use of technology will this lesson employ for teacher? for
students? (ex. presentation or publication) I will utilize PowerPoint about air
pressure.

Procedures: Overview of the lesson and time estimate for each component.
Include expanded descriptions of what the teacher and students are doing.
Hook or Anticipatory Set: Introduction - how will you grab students attention and
get them set for learning? I will begin by opening up a discuss about what is air
pressure.
Body of the lesson: Major items or activities in the order they will occur.
-

At the beginning of the lesson are going to understand what air pressure
means and in what ways is it use in our society. I expect my students to give
suggestion about air pressure and to have then take notes about what we are
talking about. I would also write in a big white paper things that come up
from our discussion. (10 minutes)
Transition: PowerPoint presentation

I will present a PowerPoint presentation that reflects what my students are to

understand and about the function that air pressure has in our society. My
students are expected to take note because we are going to discuss key
elements about air pressure ( 15 minutes)
Transition: I will talk to my students about how to create a barometer.
-

My students are going to use material that I have supply them and they are
to design a barometer using the worksheet that I will provide them. I expect
each student to create a barometer. (15 minutes)
Transition: students are going to conducted mini experiment with a group of
four students.

Students are going to get a mini experiment that ask them whether air has
weight my students are to create their prediction, test it and analysis the
results. They will measure the weight of two balloons on a scale. One not
having air and the other does. ( 15 minutes)
Transition: students are going to discuss their findings and then move to
their writing journal.

Students are going to analysis their finding and then they will write a journal
entry explaining their findings. (20 minutes)

Extensions/Differentiations: How will you adapt this lesson for students with
cultural, linguistic, and cognitive differences? Provide more visuals to students and
prepare an outline about key concepts that are mention during class time and to
ask question if my students do not understand what we are doing.
Attention to Literacy: How is literacy addressed in this lesson? Students are going
to read books little stories about air pressure then students are going to write a
journal entry about their finding and compare that to their findings in their mini
experiment.
Assessment:
-

I will evaluate the students journal entry

Evaluate on students on their investigation of the air pressure
