Fantastic rodeo weekend

enjoyed by all in Tarkio
TARKIO RESIDENTS AND THOSE WHO MADE TARKIO THEIR HOME - For the weekend enjoyed two days of fun-filled festivities that catered to people of all ages and enjoyments.
Friday and Saturday night saw the 21st annual Tarkio Rodeo held at the Tarkio Rodeo Grounds.
Two great crowds enjoyed watching the cowboys and cowgirls ride the buckin broncos and bulls
(like the one pictured at top left), race their horses around barrels, wrestle steers, and rope
calves. After the rodeo on Friday, those who felt like boot scootin (like Cathy and Terry Lesher,
pictured at top right) enjoyed a night of dancing at Heartland Rec Center in Tarkio, to music
provided by Nashville Reject. Saturday morning saw locals (like Quin Staten, bottom left) walking the streets of Tarkio to help raise funds for locals fighting cancer in the School House Rock
5K Walk/Run. Others took to the country roads riding on horseback to town with the annual
Fuzzys Rodeo Ride (pictured at second from left). Others took to the streets on their wheels,
whether it be in the classics of yesterday at the Doug Summa Memorial Car Show (pictured
above, second from right), or those vehicles driven in the Tarkio Chamber of Commerces annual Tarkio Rodeo Parade (pictured above, at right). It was a great weekend to be in Tarkio
and the weather was perfect!

Big Bam making Tarkio a stop

on its trek across the state

Close to 1,500 bicyclists,

crew members, and visitors are expected to travel
through Atchison County on
the first leg of their journey
across the state in the Big
BAM (Bicycle Across Missouri) event. The bicyclists
will begin their journey in
Rock Port, MO, on Monday, June 22, and will stop
at Niedermeyer Park in
Tarkio beginning at 9 a.m.
Local vendors will be providing concessions. Vendors
include: Northwest Living
Center with a potato bar
and drinks; the Tarkio Lions Club with biscuits and
gravy; the Tarkio seventh
grade class with breakfast
burritos, pickles, fruit, and

drinks; the Tarkio Rotary

Club with rib eye sandwiches; and the Shining Stars
Special Olympics Team with
breakfast casseroles, pastries, and juice. Free bottled
water will also be handed
out.
The riders will be making their way into town via
Hwy. 136 and Hwy. 59 and
will ride down Main Street
and then will turn toward
Niedermeyer Park. Be sure
to get out and welcome the
riders to Tarkio as they ride
to the park or stop by the
park and take part in all the
festivities and enjoy all the
delicious food that will be
available.

Tarkio Avalanche saturation issue Local couple witnesses history in the making at Belmont Stakes
We have been saturated festivities, youth sports,
as American Pharaoh becomes Triple Crown winner
with rain here lately, so its upcoming Big Bam, local
Its very rare that a race
horse wins the Triple Crown
- the Kentucky Derby, the
Preakness, and the Belmont
Stakes - and rarer still that
we locals know someone who
was able to witness it, and
even rarer still that it WAS
some locals who witnessed
it. Steve and Marvetta Volker were in New York when
American Pharaoh won the
Belmont Stakes on June 6,
2015, clinching the Triple
Crown win. Its been 37

years since the last horse,

Affirmed, won the glory.
The Volkers planned the
trip back in February, never
imagining theyd get to witness history in the making.
The roar of the crowd was
deafening when American
Pharaoh crossed the finish
line, commented Marvetta.
We still cant believe we
were part of all the excitement. I purchased four $2
tickets and did not cash
them in. Im saving them for

my scrapbook.
As of 2015, only 12 horses
have ever won the Triple
Crown. The 12 Triple Crown
winners are Sir Barton
(1919), Gallant Fox (1930),
Omaha (1935), War Admiral
(1937), Whirlaway (1941),
Count Fleet (1943), Assault
(1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew
(1977), Affirmed (1978), and
American Pharoah (2015).
Some journalists began using the term Triple Crown

to refer to the three races as

early as 1923, but it was not
until Gallant Fox won the
three events in 1930 that
Charles Hatton of the Daily
Racing Form put the term
into common use.
American
Pharoah
(foaled February 2, 2012) is
an American Thoroughbred
racehorse that is bred and
owned by Ahmed Zayat of
Zayat Stables, LLC, trained
by Bob Baffert and ridden
by Victor Espinoza.
