VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Ben Naumann
Hempfield

Ben Naumann was a

consistent force for the Black
Knights in every match this
season. Whether he was
crushing a ball from the
outside or skying to hit the
ball from the pipe position,
Naumann was the opponents
No. 1 concern. Naumann was
proficient, too, from the back
row on serve-receive and
digs. Ben made the team
better every year and will
be difficult to replace, said
Hempfield coach Mike Vogel.
Ben was a leader for the
underclassmen. At practice,
he bettered himself and made
his teammates improve.

VOLLEYBALL COACH OF THE YEAR

Dave Weaver
Cocalico

OVERVIEW
The Lancaster-Lebanon Boys Volleyball
League had one of its best seasons
ever, qualifying four teams for the PIAA
Tournament with all four winning at least
one game and one, Hempfield, getting to
the semifinals. Those same teams, Penn
Manor, Cocalico, Lancaster Mennonite and
Hempfield, all reached the semifinals in the
District Three Tournament with two, Penn
Manor and Lancaster Mennonite, getting
to the title game. Hempfield claimed the
Section One and league titles while Cocalico
and Lancaster Mennonite needed a playoff
to decide the title in Section Two, which was
won by the Eagles.

Dave Weaver led Cocalico

to its first L-L League
section title since 1997
and a berth in the L-L
championship match.
The Eagles (18-7 nontournament record), ranked in the top
10 of Class AA schools in the state
all season, advanced to the District
Three semifinals before being ousted
by eventual district and state champ
Northeastern. Weaver, who stepped
down from coaching after the season,
led Cocalico to an opening round match
in the state tournament before the
Eagles fell to state finalist Saegertown.

The league-wide boys volleyball All-Stars, the Player of the Year and the Coach of the Year were selected by a vote by the L-L Leagues volleyball coaches.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Camren Ney

OVERVIEW

Donegal

A season that will be remembered by many for its unseasonably cold and rainy
conditions took on a golden hue in district play as Hempfield, Donegal and Lancaster
County Christian claimed championships. Lancaster County Christian then won its first
PIAA title, as Kyle Ebersole tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 win over Eisenhower in the
Class A final. Manheim Centrals Blake Reiff threw a rare no-hitter in state competition;
Ephrata earned the L-L title; Lampeter-Strasburg claimed a crown in its first season
in Section Two and Lancaster Catholic reclaimed the top spot in Section Four. Off the
field, L-S star Bear Shank showed remarkable courage in undergoing brain surgery
and Manheim Township coaching legend Bill Sassaman did not have his contract
renewed after 23 seasons and 339 victories at the Blue Streaks helm.

As 24 Lancaster-Lebanon League softball teams struggled to

find themselves in March, as well as find an outdoors place
to practice, it was a safe bet that defending league champion
Lampeter-Strasburg would wear the favorites bulls-eye.
And that L-L Section Three stablemate Donegal would be
the odds-on favorite to join the Pioneers in a rematch of the
2014 title game. All of which did come to pass, but the road to
there was never cut-and-dry.
The Pioneers and Indians went down to the wire, and beyond,
in Section Three, needing a one-game playoff to decide the
champion. Accomplishing the task of beating a team twice in
three days, L-S prevailed to defend its section crown.
With only two returning starters, Warwick reloaded and wrested
the Section One title from Manheim Township, batting back a
determined push from Hempfield and upstart Penn Manor.
Solanco shook off a nightmare performance in the crossover
portion of its schedule to win Section Two. In its first year
back in the section after realignment, Garden Spot closed fast,
securing a first-ever league playoff berth.
Annville-Cleona and Pequea Valley staged their annual battle
royale in Section Four. For the third time in seven years a
playoff, won by A-C, was needed to decide the title.
After falling to L-S in the one-game playoff for the section
title, Donegal topped L-S to win the league title and went on
to win the District Three Class AAA championship.
Scoring its first post-season wins since 1999, Penn Manor
advanced to the semifinals of the District AAAA tournament,
qualifying for its first-ever PIAA Tournament.
The Comets and Indians both posted initial victories in the state
tourney before being eliminated in the quarterfinal round.

SOFTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR

Mark Hough
Warwick

After winning eight Section

One titles in a row beginning
in 2005, as well as nine
seasons out of 10 from
2003-12, Warwick watched
Hempfield and Manheim
Township claim the section
title the last two seasons.
With just two senior starters
returning, along with four
sophomores with game
experience, the chances of
the Warriors returning to the
top spot seemed slight.
In his second season as
Warwicks head coach,
Mark Hough melded this
limited seasoning with four

newcomers,
the resulting
amalgam
reclaiming
the section
crown for
the Warriors,
their 12th
overall.
The Warriors
posted a 15-1 league record
with a one-run, extra-inning
loss to Hempfield the only
blemish. They topped L-L
finalists Donegal and L-S
in nonleague games but
L-S turned the tables in the
league semifinals, winning 2-1.
The Warriors bowed out of
the District Three Class AAAA
Tournament in the first round,
finishing 19-3 overall.

The league-wide softball All-Stars, the Coach of the Year and Player of the Year were selected by sports writer Dave Byrne.

bowing in the state
semifinals, while seniors
Adam Bahney and Galen
McNaughton came in
second and third in league
singles and teamed up to
win their third L-L League
doubles title before
clinching both the district
and state tournaments.

Will Wanner
(Section Two)

Lancaster Mennonite
In just his sophomore year,
Wanner went undefeated (11-0)
and won his second consecutive
L-L AA singles title. He finished
second in District Three before
falling in the quarterfinals of the
PIAA tournament to eventual
champion Kyle Seelig of
Plumstead Christian. In doubles,
Wanner teamed with Haemoon
Won to go 10-1 and finish second
in the league tournament.

OVERVIEW
It wasnt just on the courts where
volleys were traded this spring.
Manheim Township and Hempfield
alternated team titles with Hempfield
winning its first L-L League crown
in four years and the Blue Streaks
taking home Section One and District
Three honors. Hempfields Derek
Hagino and Cedar Crests Colin
Muraika also got in on the action
in singles play as Hagino downed
Muraika for the Class AAA league
title before Muraika returned the
favor to grab district gold.
While Lancaster Mennonites Will
Wanner established himself as a
contender in Class AA with his second
league title and second-place finish in
districts, Elco emerged from a threeway tie in Section Two with its first
league crown since 2003. The Raiders
tandem of Adam Bahney and Galen
McNaughton claimed PIAA doubles
gold after winning the Class AA district
crown and their third league trophy.

The league-wide tennis All-Stars, the Coach of the Year and Player of the Year were selected by the L-L Leagues tennis coaches.

JUNE 16, 2015

OVERVIEW
For Warwick, the Warriors started
off not-so-hot, losing a thumper
to Manheim Township and a
heartbreaker to Lampeter-Strasburg,
before going 9-3 down the stretch
to finish third in the L-L standings,
compete in the L-L tournament, and
win the programs first-ever District
Three playoff game.
For Elizabethtown, the Bears
appeared to have the makings of
a breakout campaign by going 4-1
in the L-L early on before faltering
down the stretch, but somewhat
making up for it by upending
Cocalico in overtime in late April.
That put a damper on a Cocalico
season that turned around at the
calendars mid-point, signified by
a two-goal win over LampeterStrasburg that gave the Eagles hope
of a possible berth into the L-L
playoffs. But it would be ultimately
L-S and Ephrata battling down the
stretch for the final spot in the L-L
playoffs, with the Mountaineers
winning the tie-breaker when they
finished tied with the Pioneers for
the fourth and final spot in the L-L
standings.
Hempfield and Manheim Township
met in the L-L tournament
championship game, the Blue Streaks
winning and going on to capture the
District Three title while the Black
Knights nabbed the District Three
third-place game, with both teams
putting up a fight in the state playoffs.

this spring. He also was recently
named a finalist for the U.S. ArmyPro Football Hall of Fame Award
for Excellence. The award is given
to 20 students across the country
who exemplify strength similar to
Army soldiers. To meet the criteria,
students must play on an athletic
team, maintain a minimum GPA of
3.5 and be involved with their local
community. Ward meets all of those
requirements, and although he is
a lacrosse player, it was his work
in the classroom that got him into
Cornell.

While a familiar face reigned supreme in the end,

there were a few notable firsts and entertaining
matchups in the L-L this season.
Manheim Township won the regular season and
L-L tournament titles again, before going on to
win the programs seventh-straight District Three
title. But the Blue Streaks had some challenges
along the way. Most notably, the Lancaster
Country Day/Lancaster Catholic/McCaskey
Cougars put up a pair of strong battles. In their
regular season matchup, Manheim Township held
off the Cougars by just a goal. This set the stage
for the L-L tournament title game, which the
Cougars appeared in for the first time in program
history. The Blue Streaks needed double-overtime
to down the Cougars, 12-11.
The L-L sent four teams to the District Three
playoffs, with Hempfield making it to the title game
for the first time ever, but falling there to Manheim
Township. Still, it marked the fifth time in the
District Three tournaments seven years of existence
that the title game was an all-L-L matchup.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Mark Pinkerton
Manheim Township

What helped Pinkerton

earn this honor was
his coaching tactic in
the quarterfinal round
of districts against
Lancaster Country Day/
Lancaster Catholic/
McCaskey. Twice before the Blue Streaks won by
a goal in a pair of nail-biters over the Cougars.
In the district quarterfinals, though, the Blue
Streaks rolled to a 12-7 victory. What changed?
Well, instead of using speed and athleticism to
outpace the opponent often the key to the
Blue Streaks victories Pinkerton had his group
slow things down and play more of a possession
game. This kept the Cougars out of striking
distance and allowed Manheim Township to
eventually go on to win the programs seventhstraight District Three title. Had a couple things
gone their way in the PIAA quarterfinals, the L-L
regular season and tournament champion Blue
Streaks would have had a good shot at making
an appearance in the state title game.

Leading your team in goals scored

is hard enough. Handling some
of the face-offs and running back
and forth as a midfielder on top of
getting things done offensively is
even harder.
She developed as a leader over
the years, said Barbara Zeigler,
who coached the Cougars the
last three seasons. And this year
as a captain she led and worked
with our younger players, which
was essential but crucial, too, as
we played four freshmen in most
games.
Daggett (82 goals, 11 assists, 57
percent shooting percentage,
76 draw controls, 58 ground
balls, 34 caused turnovers) was
a big reason the Cougars made
their first appearance in the L-L
tournament title game pushing
Manheim Township to the brink
and returned to the District Three
tournament, finishing 16-4 overall.
Daggett will join the Penn State
womens lacrosse team next

Calculating success
Spiller found the solutions for achievement in football and wrestling
DAVE BYRNE

DBYRNE@LNPNEWS.COM

Out of a constellation of Lancaster-Lebanon League athletic stars, Solancos Bo

Spiller is the LNP Male Athlete of the Year.
A supernova in two sports, Spiller rattled
off 40 consecutive victories on the wrestling
mats last winter before a heart-breaking,
two-point loss in the PIAA Class AAA State
Championship final.
This just months after he anchored the defense of a Solanco football team that tripled
its victory total from the previous year and
qualified for the District Three Class AAA
playoffs for the first time since 2007.
Which was when Spiller was a
Delaware County fifth-grader.
He would move from Newtown Square to the Southern

End when he was in seventh grade.

The youngest of four children of Ed and
Rose Spiller, the Golden Mule lineman
made 71 tackles, 52 solo, including 14 tackles for losses. He had three sacks, five quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles.
On the mats his 40 victories included 26
falls 85 for his career and he added his
first Manheim Holiday Tournament and
Beast of the East titles to his third career
Mule Classic and second Penn Manor Holiday and Escape the Rock titles.
A three-time finalist, he claimed his
second consecutive L-L League and District
Three AAA championships this year.
A three-time L-L Section Two First
Team defensive lineman and two-time
LNP Fall All-Star, he nabbed his third
LNP Winter All-Star nod and his
second Section One First Team
All-Star selection.
His 128 career victories sit him
tied for fourth on the Golden
Mules all-time list.
We caught up with Spiller on a
day when he and Thomas Haines
entertained third graders at Robert Fulton Elementary, joining
them in a day of kickball.
LNP: Your given name is
Shawn. Where does Bo
come from?
Bo Spiller: When I was little,
like three or four, the big commercial was the Bo knows
with the great Bo Jackson. Id
pick up a football and throw
it and my dad would say, Bo
Knows! It kind of stuck and he
kept calling me Bo after that.
LNP: How did you get, who got
you, interested in wrestling?
Bo: My dad wrestled in high
school and then at Stevens

(Tech), so he got me into it when I was really young. I liked it, but I didnt love it. Once
I started getting better, I started loving it.
LNP: Define the Southern End experience.
Bo: They all say its Hicktown, but I think
its one of the (most) friendly places around.
Youll be out for a run and everybodys waving to you in their car. Its just so outgoing
and welcoming. Its a great atmosphere, a
great place to raise your kids.
LNP: Youre off to Bloomsburg this fall.
What will you study?
Bo: Math education. Math is easily my
best subject. I love solving problems, I like
being stumped and having to work through
all the steps.
LNP: So, easy question ... What teacher
influenced you the most?
Bo: Id probably say my math teacher, Mr.
Chris Rocker. Just the way he teaches, the
way he interacts with kids made me want to
be a math teacher.
LNP: Whats your favorite Monopoly
game piece?
Bo: I like the boot. Thats the one Ive
always had.
LNP: PB&J, Fluffernutter, or the Elvis
Classic?
Bo: Id say peanut butter and jelly. Coach
(John) Little always got the Uncrustables
every tournament and they kind of grow on
you, you get to like em a lot.
LNP: Pancakes or waffles?
Bo: Waffles.
LNP: Syrup or something else?
Bo: It depends on what kind of mood Im

Grateful for challenges

All that athletics offers gives Liebl road map for life
TIM GROSS

TGROSS@LNPNEWS.COM

For Ephratas Kelly Liebl, the 2014-15

school year brought about milestones and
memories, individual accomplishments
and team success to cap her Mountaineers
high school career.
Liebl helped Ephratas soccer team
reach the state tournament in the fall.
On the basketball court in the winter, she
scored her 1,000th career point and led
the Mountaineers in a Section Two title
race against eventual-champion Lebanon.
During an injury-infused spring season,
Liebl keyed the Mounts Section Two
championship and undefeated dual-meet
season while setting school records in both
track and field events.
Liebl will attend St. Josephs in the fall
and run track for the Hawks.
LNP: To be named Lancaster Newspapers Female Athlete of the Year
What does that mean to you?
Kelly Liebl: It is such an honor. There are
so many talented individuals in this league,
and to be picked and noticed in all of the talent that surrounds me is an amazing feeling.
The league is very competitive, and I would
not have been able to improve to where I am
today if it werent for the constant competition to push me, as well as my amazing
coaches I have encountered throughout my
life.
LNP: Whos the best athlete in
any sport that youve competed against this year? What
stands out about her?
Kelly: There are so many amazing
athletes I have competed against
this year. One that really stands
out to me would be Brittany Ulrich
from Lebanon. She is a great athlete
and has so much talent. She is also a

very nice girl with a great attitude and love

for what she does! I was able to play AAU
with her, and it was a great time with her
and the rest of my teammates from around
the league!
LNP: Which of your teammates has had
the most influence on you?
Kelly: The teammate that has influenced me the most would have to be my
sister, Kay. She has always been there to
support me and encourage me, as well as
push me to keep getting better because
she is quite the athlete. Its always interesting when we get to compete against
each other, shes always ready to compete and bring the best she can do.
LNP: Of your three sports, which one
do you think youve learned the most
from and why?
Kelly: I think I have learned the most
from track and field. It always challenges me individually and pulls
together the need to work
together as a team as well.
There are always things
that come up that are
unexpected, but I enjoy
the challenge. I love to
find something within
myself to overcome
struggles and road
blocks in both

sports and personal life.

LNP: What are the biggest factors in
your decision to go to St. Josephs?
Kelly: I fell in love with the campus as soon
as I stepped foot on it. Its beautiful. The people
are also so extremely nice, and it was clear they
cared for their students as individuals and not
just a way to bring in money. I also loved that I
will be able to attend Mass right on campus so
close to the dorms. It sounds pretty cool to be a
Hawk, too ... . Doesnt it?
LNP: Im sure you know of the St. Joes
tradition of the Hawk mascot continuously flapping its wings (The Hawk
will never die). How long do you think
you could flap your arms in the hawk
costume?
Kelly: I do not think I would last very
long without my arms getting tired, but if I
were to put a time on it, Id say 15 minutes.
Someone needs to get back in the weight
room.
LNP: What has being a studentathlete taught you outside of the
field/court/track?
Kelly: It has given me a drive in life to do
the best I can under whatever circumstances
I am facing in life. My eyes have also been
opened to the many gifts and good qualities God has given people in life, and that
everyone always has a way to contribute
and give back
to others.
LNP: What
will you miss
the most
about wearing the Ephrata colors as
an athlete?
Kelly: I will

L-L LEAGUE SPRING ALL STARS: BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

LNP | LANCASTER, PA

Boys Track and Field

OVERVIEW
The 2015 boys' track and field season
saw L-L League resurgences in Lancaster,
Lebanon and Quarryville, district
dominance on the throwing fields and
a handful of hardware at the state
championship meet.
A deep and talented McCaskey team,
coached by Carl Frederick, ascended to
the top of the league, knocking off section
rival Cedar Crest in Week One and riding
the momentum to an undefeated dualmeet record and section crown. A pair
of gold medals from sophomore Nathan
Henderson who also set a school
record and clocked the second-fastest
3,200-meter run time in L-L League history
this season helped the Red Tornado
capture their first league title since 2007.
Also on the track, Solanco junior Billy
Cooney the league's 110-meter and
300-meter hurdles champion helped a
young Solanco team claim its first section
title in 21 years. The Golden Mules outlasted
an invigorated Lebanon team atop the
Section Two standings.
Warwick senior David Lucas wrapped up
his standout throwing career with league
and district discus gold before mining
silver in discus and shot put at the PIAA
Championships. Donegal senior Bryce
Sadler won the district shot put and
headlined a list of seven L-L League boys
on the medal stand for the District Three
Class AAA boys' shot put.

in. Sometimes you put

some ice cream on
there. Mmm!
LNP: Surf or turf?
Bo: Turf. Prime Rib.
LNP: Smoothie or
milkshake?
Bo: Milkshakes,
absolutely. I like peanut
butter, (made) with
chocolate milk.
LNP: Favorite football
memory?
Bo: Definitely the Cocalico game my senior
year (a 14-7, Week Nine
victory). It was a big
win, a great game. Hard
fought on both sides.
LNP: Wrestling
memory?

Bo: There are so many.

(Pauses ...) Watching
Coach Little. The things
that hed do, its unbelievable. Like walking on
his hands up and down
the (wrestling) room.
LNP: Funniest thing
a teammate ever said
about you?
Bo: They still bust on me
about my foot, sophomore
year at leagues. (Spiller
false started in overtime,
costing him the championship). Theyre always
telling me make sure your
foot is on the line. Ill never
live that down.
LNP: What teammate
made the deepest impression on you?
Bo: My freshman year,
(senior) Connor Moran
took me under his wing.
He worked with me every
day, helped me with my

technique, the right way to

get in shape. Hed drive me
home if I needed a ride.
LNP: What opponent
made the deepest impression on you?
Bo: Definitely Cocalico,
in football. This year they
lost like 20 seniors, they
still poured so much heart
into every game they
played. You see them and
you say, I want our team
to be like that. Thats
what you work for. Thats
the kind of team I want.
LNP: What would
people be surprised to
learn about you?
Bo: I like literature
classes. I enjoy writing
poetry. I dont like to
write essays, (but) I like
to write poetry, short
stories, just to use my
imagination, be creative
about it.

miss my teammates
and coaches. They are
incredible individuals, and I will always
be thankful for their
kindness and helping
me grow so much into
the person I am today.
The memories I have
made are never going to
be forgotten! I love you
guys!
LNP: Is there a singular moment or game
or event from this
year that stands out
to you?
Kelly: There are so
many, but one specific moment that really
stands out to me is
when Kay and I both set
school records on the
same day. It was a tremendous accomplish-

ment and I was glad to

share such an experience with her. I will also
never forget the way the
community and school
supported me getting
my 1,000th point this
year (in basketball). The
sense of unity and love
I felt throughout the
entire gym was a feeling
and moment Ill never
forget.
LNP: Looking back on
your high school career, what makes you
the most proud?
Kelly: I am most
proud of being able
to dedicate myself to
academics and sports
and giving up a lot of
other things I could
have been doing with
my time. Looking back
throughout the years,
I feel that I could really start seeing the

results of all of the

time I put in during my
senior year. Im proud
of myself that I could
keep giving myself the
reminder that the hard
work will be worth it,
and Ill see the results
in the future!
LNP: Youll be a
cheesesteak expert by
the end of your four
years in Philadelphia. How do you like
your cheesesteaks,
and whats the best
cheesesteak place in
our area?
Kelly: I love my
cheesesteaks with a
lot of cheese, sauted
onions, and some nice
pizza sauce on top! And
the best place, from
my experience, is right
in the Liebl kitchen!
My mom makes great
cheesesteaks.
