Introduction

Ashtak Varga is a procedure to analyze the strength of planets

and houses. This is a mathematical calculation in which you are
able to calculate numbers influencing planets and their
strength. The term Ashtak Varga is related to Number 8. It is
associated with Ascendant and seven planets. Ashtak Varga
helps in studying auspicious and inauspicious results of transits.
This is an important procedure to determine the strength of
planets. It guides an astrologer in the right direction. Ashtak
Varga is an excellent knowledge. It tells us about a persons
progress and success in life. It provides the right kind of
information related to a persons Kundali.
Among numerous principles and procedures mentioned in
astrology, Ashtak Varga is a fine procedure to analyze a
persons Kundali and make predictions. It is one of the most
important procedures for this purpose. This procedure also
determine that the knowledge we have about astrology has
been passed on to us by saints and sages. In order to
understand how Ashtak Varga analyzes the strength of planet,
we can study Moon with an example.
When Moon is strong in a house, it makes a person very
generous and emotional. Such a person is always involved in
works related to the welfare of mankind. He is a soft-hearted
person. Such a person believes in helping others and therefore,
works for the betterment of society. He is able to have peace
of mind. However, when Moon is weak, a person may be
stressed or tensed. His ability to think clearly is also affected.
In the same way, if we consider Sun and use it as an example,
we will get following results. When Sun is strong, a person

achieves success. Such a person attains a strong position in

life. He also has excellent leadership qualities. Such a person
does not get nervous when he experiences success. He is also
extremely intelligent. In the absence of a strong Sun it
becomes difficult for a person to succeed and be courageous in
life. Hence, planets associated with auspicious numbers and
their analysis through Ashtak Varga is extremely important in
astrology.
In order to make the right predictions, a person needs to be
well-versed with the knowledge of transits. There are many
principles and texts about this knowledge. Ashtak Varga has
been able to become very important for this analysis. It helps
in understanding transits and making the right kind of
predictions.

Terminologies used in
Ashtak Varga
Ashtak Varga has played an important role in astrology since ancient times. In
order to understand the principles of Ashtak Varga, we need to understand the
meaning of different terminologies used in Ashtak Varga. Primary words in
Ashtak Varga include Bindu, Rekha, Kakshya, Prastarak, Bhinna Ashtak, Sarva
Ashtak and Samudaya Ashtak Varga. We will explain all these terminologies in
this article.

Bindu
All the seven planets including Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn
and Ascendant emit positive energies. A planet emits positive energy in certain
places while negative energy in other places. If the energy is positive, it is known
as Bindu. In Northern India, auspicious energy is Bindu, while inauspicious
energy is called Rekha. On the other hand, In Southern India, positive energy is
known as Rekha.

Kakshya
Kakshya is a specific part of a sign. Each Kakshya has a specific planet as its
Lord. Ruling planets of Kakshya are Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury,
Moon and Ascendant. A sign consists of 30 degrees. Dividing it in eight different
parts produces eight Kakshyas. One Kakshya is equal to 3 degree 45 minutes.
Each Kakshya gives results according to its position in a specific house.

Prastarak Chakra
In Prastarak Chakra, Bindu provided by eight Kakshyas in twelve houses are
explained in a tabular form. A different Prastarak Chakra is created for every
planet.

Bhinna Ashtak
Yogas of Bindu provided by planets in a Prastarak Chakra are explained in a
Janma Kundali. This way, each planet has its own Varga according to the
Prastarak Chakra. In other words, every planet has its own Bhinna Ashtak Varga.

Sarva Ashtak
Sarva Ashtak is the sum of all auspicious points or Bindu in the twelve houses of
a Kundali. Bindu provided by every planet in its Bhinna Ashtak Varga are added
into one common Varga. This is known as Sarva Ashtak. This is also known as
Samudaya Varga. However, there is one difference. At times, Sarva Ashtak Varga
can be formed even without Bhinna Ashtak Varga. This is known as Samudaya
Ashtak Varga.

Rekha Sarva Ashtak Varga

Every house receives eight types of energies from seven planets and Ascendant.
Hence, every house consists of 56 points. If auspicious points are subtracted
from 56, we get a total of inauspicious points for that house. These are known
as Rekha in Northern India.

Ashtak Varga and Transits

Planets are always moving from one place to another. Hence, their position in
the universe is always changing. This movement of planets is known as transit.
Ashtak Varga is one of the most important principles for analyzing transits of
planets. In order to understand this knowledge, we need to study the speeds of
planets. Every planet stays in a sign for a certain duration. Hence, we need to
understand the duration for which a planet will stay in a sign.
Duration for transits of different planets are as follows :
Moon - 2 days and one quarter
Mars - 45 days
Mercury - 28 days
Jupiter - 1 year
Venus - 30 days
Saturn - 2 and a half years
Rahu-Ketu - 1 and a half years
Usually, transits are analyzed by studying a planets position from Moon. We
need to analyze Saturns transit as it stays in a sign for the longest duration. We
need to understand its effects after staying for so long in a sign. With the help of
Ashtak Varga, we can easily understand all this.
As mentioned earlier, there are seven planets and the eighth is Ascendant.
Auspicious and inauspicious points (Bindu) are obtained from all these planets. If
the seven planets and ascendant give one auspicious point each, there will 8
auspicious points in a Kundali. If there are seven auspicious points, a person ill
have 7 parts of auspicious results. On the basis of such results, auspiciousness in
a persons life is calculated. According to another opinion, if a planet in transit is
in 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th house from birth Moon or Ascendant, or if it is in a
friendly sign, own sign or exalted, and there are four auspicious points, a person
will have more auspicious results.
On the other hand, if the planet is transit in other houses from the birth Moon, a
person may receive inauspicious results. If a planet is debilitated, malefic or
weak, the person may receive more inauspicious results. The range for
inauspicious or auspicious points in Bhinna Ashtak Varga range from 0 to 8.
Planets with 4 points are considered to give mixed results. On the other hand,
this range is between 0 to 56 in Sarva Ashtak Varga. A planet with 28 points is
considered to give mixed results.
In addition to all this, transits need to be analyzed through Nakshatras. These
are studied under nine stars. These nine stars are : Janma, Sampat, Vipat,

Kshem, Pratyari, Sadhak, Vadh, Mitra and Atimitra. All the 27 Nakshatras are
divided into three categories. Transit of planets in Kakshyas is also another way
to study transits of planets. We also have to study temporary auspicious and
inauspicious planets. We also need to understand that transits of planets also
give results according to Yogas in a Kundali.

Significance of Planets in
Ashtakavarga

All the seven planets, except of Rahu/Ketu have their own special significance in
ashtakavarga. According to the principles of ashtakavarga, any planet whether in
its own sign or exalted state is not able to give its results unless it is place in its
bhinashtak varga with sufficient counts of bindu.
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are thoroughly analyzed in
the system of Ashtakavarga. This is because the effects of planets are based on
their karakas that play significant role in determining the results. Thus, first of all
the karakas of the planets are determined before reaching to any conclusion.

Sun Planet
Sun depicts the overall character of an individual. Sun is the karaka of fame and
recognition. With the analysis of the Sun, a person can determine the condition
of father. It also talks about a person in concern with spirituality and maturity.

Moon Planet
By analyzing the condition of Moon, the metal status of a person can be
determined. His thoughts, condition of heart and intelligence of a native can be
analyzed. health of the mother and wealth can also be determined through it.

Mars Planet
In Ashtakvarga, Mars can be used to analyze about real estate, siblings, courage,
high authority, hard work, ability to work, and sexual power.

Mercury Planet
Mercurys karaka element includes intelligence, speech and recreation. Through
analysis of this planet one gets to know about the brain development of an
individual. It gives strength and concentration in studies as well.

Jupiter Planet
Jupiter is the klara of education and wisdom. Through analysis of Jupiter one
gets to know about the level of education of the native. Wealth, pleasure of
child, heritance etc. can also be determined through it. Jupiter brings fame,
recognition, and respect in life.

Venus Planet
Venus is analyzed to determine the marital life of the native. It symbolized
beauty. Venus is the karaka of sperm. The person is inclined towards art and
artistic things. Venus tells about personality, attractions and material pleasures.

Saturn Planet
Saturn is the karaka of time and longevity. It gives the ability to work hard and
sacrifice the material pleasures. The effect of the native on others can be
analyzed through it.
Thus, ashtakvarga can be determined through the study of karaka of different
planets. It is imperative to understand the principles of astrology before reaching
to any conclusion.

Determination of results
Through Ashtakvarga

The method used to determine the auspiciousness of planets through the analysis of ascendant and Moon, also applies in
determining the auspiciousness of houses through the analysis of planets. In ashtakvarga, bindus determine the
inauspicious position of planets from ascendant and the rekha is used to analyse the auspiciousness of the same. A
person can know about life incidences through the study of astrology. In astrology, the placement of planets and
nakshatra determine the life events of an events. Scholars, and pundits make use of this study to make predictions.
Similarly, in Ashtakvarga there is a simple methods that can be used to predict the life events of an individual. This
method is known as Parashar Rishi:

Yatha Lagnacha Chandracha Grahnaman Phalam

Tathanyobhayopi Khatwbhyo Vichintyam Devidavare
Atovyardikhetaman Salagnanam Prithak Prithak
Ashtanam Sarvabhavottham Yathoktamshubham Shubham
GYatyadau Karanam Sthanam Bindurekhopalkshitam
Kramadshtakvargarsya Vachayam Spashtphalam Yatha

While discussing the principles of astrology, Saint Parashar has also mentioned the significance of Ashtakavarga. In
ashtakvarga the strong position of planets have been mentioned. In this method, the position of planets are determined
on the basis of bindu and rekha. It is important to have the knowledge of planet transits to get the right
results.Ashtakvarga is taken into consideration when analyzing the dasha and antardasha of planets.

It can be said that even after getting maximum counts of bindus a planet may not be able to give good results. Also,
when a planet in its bheenashtak varga transits in a rashi without any bindu gives very inauspicious results.

It is said that any planet whether it is in its exalted sign or located in the trikon house or mooltrikona sign, it wont be
able to give good results if it has less than 25 bindus. Rashi that is favourable in Ashtakvarga gives fruitful results. It is
important to analyze the Ashtakavarga shudhi to determine the auspiciousness of the work being done.

The transit phase of planets are determined by its position from the moon and ascendant and ashtakavarga has a special
significance in it. The effects of this methods can be understood by the energy emitted by the planets and ascendant in
Ashtakavarga. It helps us to understand the conditions of plants in a kundali and what will be their effects during transit.

According to the principles of Ashtakavarga, after analyzing the trikon shodhana, ekadhipatya shodhanas and mandal
shodhana for every planet in its bhinashtak, their shodhya pinda are also counted. In order to calculate the shodhya
pinda of a planet, the rashi gunakar and the bindus of the houses in which the planet is situated are taken into
consideration.

In sarvashtakavarga, after calculating all the three shodhanas, the bindu count of the planets are multiplied by the rashi
gunakar and planet gunakar to get the result for shodhya pinda.

Rashi Gunakar
Each sign/rashi has been assigned with specific gunakar. This gunakar is known as rashi gunakar. These counts do not
change under any circumstance.

Procedure for Formulating

Sarva Ashtak Varga
0 Comment(s) | Read 776 Time(s)

If you want to formulate a table for Sarva Ashtak, you may discard making Prastarak Varga if you want to. The following
procedure will tell you to easily make Sarva Ashtak. For some important tasks, you only need Sarva Ashtak. Hence, you
dont need Bhinna Ashtak to formulate a table for Sarva Ashtak.

In this procedure, we have considered Bindus (auspicious points) of planets in different houses as numbers. For instance,
Sun gives 3 points in 1, 2, 3 and 4 houses from its place. In the first house, it gives 2 points. It gives 3 points in sixth
house. Four points in seventh house, 5 in eighth, 7 in eleventh and 2 in twelfth house.

In the same way, we can calculate Bindus by different planets in different houses. In order to formulate Sarva Ashtak
Varga, we have to create a table. Planets in signs should be mentioned accordingly. You can create a table for Sarva
Ashtak by writing points for each planet in different lines. You should remember that signs should be written besides only
those planets in which they are present. Begin writing points from this place. This procedure is also known as Samudaya
Ashtak Varga.

Significance of Transits
Through Nakshatra in
Ashtakavarga
0 Comment(s) | Read 796 Time(s)

The significance of transits can be understood through the study of nakshatras. The results are used in Ashtakvarga to
make predictions. The classifications of nakshatra are divided into nine segments: birth, wealth, peace, seeker, slaughter,
friend, over-friendly and so on. This way it gets easy to segregate it into 27 different nakshatras. These 27 Nakshatras

can be divided into 3 parts, wherein each one is analyzed through the position of Moon. For instance: if the native is born
in Capricorn sign in Uttarashada Nakshatra, then it will be called the birth nakshatra of the native.

Astrology scriptures have talked about different results of planets in different nakshatra transits in detail. According to

Rules for Results in

Ashtakavarga
0 Comment(s) | Read 798 Time(s)

According to Parashara Hora Shastra, each ascendant has been assigned malefic and benefic planets in astrology. These
planets are analyzed to determine the results. Many a times it is observed that certain planets give auspicious or
inauspicious results in an ascendant. It is necessary to analyze the lord of the ascendant of a birth chart.

If the lord of the ascendant is a naturally auspicious planet, then it will always give auspicious results. For example:
Saturn will always be auspicious for Capricorn and Aquarius.
The lord of trikon will always be auspicious as well. For example: Mars is auspicious for the lord of trikon in kendra for
Cancer and Leo. Similarly, Saturn is auspicious for Taurus and Libra ascendant.
Inauspicious planets being thr lord of kendra leave their inauspiciousness due to Kendradhipati dosha. On the other
hand, auspicious planets become neutral.

Aspects
Planetary aspects have great significance in Ashtakavarga. During Ashtakvarga transit, the auspicious planets aspecting
other planets increases the auspiciousness. On the other hand, the aspect of inauspiciousness planet also increases the
inauspiciousness.

Effect of Retrograde Planets

Retrograde naturally auspicious planets transiting in favourable house give strength and auspiciouness to related planets
and rashis. However, transit in unfavourable house decrease the auspiciousness. Transit of retrograde naturally
inauspicious planet can be full of sufferings.

Effect of Dashanath
A planet that transits in favourable house in suspicions dasha gives auspicious results. On the other hand, transit in
unfavourable house give inauspicious results. Other than this, inauspicious results are obtained when a malefic planet
transits in unfavourable house in its dasha.

Effect of Astagat
A planet gives inauspicious results when it sets in unfavourable house during transit and enters the house of Rahu/Ketu.

Being in Malefic and Benefic Kartari

When a planet comes between two malefic planets during transit is it situated in malefic kartari. Also, if the planet
transiting in favourable houses comes into the this yoga, then it is not able to give desired results. However, when it
enters the unfavourable houses during transit, the inauspicious results increases. In Benefic Kartari, the results are totally
opposite to Malefic Kartari. It should also be noted that when a planet crosses over its own ruling house it results in some
or the other auspicious incident in the life of the native.

Method To Compute
Trikon Shodhan
0 Comment(s) | Read 511 Time(s)

Trikon Shodhan is performed after performing Mandal Shodhan in Sarvashtakavarga. All the signs have been divided into
four categories i.e fire, air, earth and water. These are the four elements of universe. Thus, there are 3 signs in every
varga that are trikon signs. These have been classified in different vargas, i.e (1-5-9), (2-6-10), (3-7-11) and (4-8-12).

Fire Signs - Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn

Air Signs: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius

Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces

Rules

If the bindu count of the signs of any of the element is not equal, then consider the sign with lowest number of bindus
and use that number to deduct the bindu counts of other rashi.

The any of the sign of an element has 0, then shodhan is not performed.

If any of the tw signs of a particular element has 0, then the bindu count of the third sign will automatically become 0.

If the bindu counts of all the signs are equal, then after the shodhan the points of all the signs will get 0.

Now, we will use these rules through an illustrative kundli to understand them better.

In this kundli after performing the Mandal shodhan, thr ascendant has 12 bindus, second house is with 3 bindus, third
house with 12 bindus, fourth house with 6 bindus, fifth house with 11 bindus, seventh house with 10 bindus, eighth
house with 1 bindu, ninth hosue with 9 bindus, enth house with 9 bindus, eleventh house with 8 bindus and twelfth
house with 12 bindus.

Trikon Shodhan of these bindus will be according to the table given below :
