Annealed Engineering Steel

1191 C45E / 1042 (ASTM & SAE)

Europe : DIN EN 10083-1 / DIN EN 10250-3 / DIN EN 10277-5

Standards
USA : ASTM 29 / ASTM 183 / ASTM A 331 / ASTM 510 / ASTM A 576

C Si Mn P S Cr Mo Ni
Chemical 0.42 - 0.50 0.15 - 0.40 0.50 - 0.80 < 0.035 < 0.035 ≤ 0.40 ≤ 0.10 ≤ 0.40
Composition in % Note : (Cr + Mo + Ni) approx. 0.63%. A controlled Sulphur content of 0.20-0.35% can be supplied if required.
Narrower or other tolerance ranges in chemical composition have to be agreed before order is placed.

Material Medium carbon engineering steel more often used in the normalized than in the quenched and tempered
Characteristics condition. This steel grade is suitable for surface hardening

This steel has a low hardenability. The microstructure in the normalized condition consists of ferrite and pearlite.
Transformation
In the quenched and tempered condition on the surface of the bars, a bainitic microstructure can be obtained
Characteristics
depending on the bar diameter. Deeper into the core a ferrite-pearlite structure is to be expected.

Applications General mechanical engineering components such as hydraulich jacks, pisons, axels and pinions for gears.

Products Hot rolled bars in annealed condition Hot forged bars in annealed Bright steel bars

HRc
If required, more limited hardenbility values on the lower range (HL) or higher range (HH) can be supplied.
These narrower limits have to be specifically ordered.
