have undergone transformations in semantic structure and they are highly polysemantic now e.g.
finger. New words have been formed from Anglo-Saxon roots mainly by means of affixation
,word composition and conversion .Such affixes of native origin as -er, -ness, ish, -ed : un-; mishave been widely used to build numerous new words throughout the history of English , Though
some of them have changed their meaning e.g. -er in Old English was added to noun stems, now
it is added only to verb stems Thus the words of native origin have been playing a significant
role in the English language.
