Cohort Increased Learning Time Description
Stubbs added an hour to the school day. Daily start times for
teachers were staggered in order to support the added
instructional time while minimizing the cost. Additional time is
also offered to students in the form of an extended year
approximately two weeks. This extended time in the summer is
designed to support individual student needs as well as
supporting student engagement and access to opportunities for
2 enrichment
Glasgow added an additional hour to the school day for all
students and created a staggered schedule for teaching staff that
addresses student instruction needs, creates time for
collaboration, and keeps the costs to a sustainable level. A
Summer Acceleration Academy is also conducted offering an
extended year opportunity for 9th and 10th graders identified as
needing time and opportunity to transition into the Academy
environment and/or catch up in meeting academic goals. The
Academy is two weeks in length for each grade and covers core
content areas, social and emotional development tools, and
transitional skills necessary to move from early high school years
into the 11th grade with everything in place to make graduation
2 fully attainable.
Extended time opportunities at Howard High School include
adding an additional period to the schedule offered Monday
through Thursday, embedding within the school day an
Academic League period, and the creation of a Summer Bridge
2 program.
2 In an effort to enable teachers to develop deep complex lesson
plans that allow teachers to drill deeper into content, the school
switched from a traditional school schedule to an alternating A/B
block schedule. This change increased each class period from
51 minutes to 93 minutes and eliminated three transition periods

each day. This change added a total of 12 minutes of instruction
per day, totaling 36 hours of additional instruction time per year.
To further instructional time, the school day was extended from
2:42 to 3:00. This change has added 18 minutes of instructional
time to each day, totaling 54 additional hours of instructional time
per year. The school day could not be extended further given our
transportation program with the Caesar Rodney School District.
The school conducted a time audit to determine how they can
more effectively utilize the time during the school day. The
Capital School District was able to increase learning time by
implementing the following strategies: 1) extension of the school
day, 2) small group instruction and 3) increase of teacher
collaboration time.
-extension of the school day.
69,360 min = 1156 hours. (This is a 30 hour increase from the
2011-12 school year and 96 hours over the state requirement of
1060 hours for instruction).
- Increase in Small Group Instruction and Teacher Collaboration
Time:
Teachers will utilize current time within the contract more
effectively and this time will be used as collaboration time and
small group instruction. In doing so, this will yield an additional
3 60 hours of time for collaboration and small group instruction
Bancroft added an additional hour to the school day. A
Summer Academy is conducted offering an extended year
opportunity in reaching academic goals. The Academy is six
hours per day for five weeks in length and will be developed to
cover core content areas, social and emotional development
tools, and transitional skills necessary to move from one grade
to the next. The Academy will be offered to all students but
3 approximately 75 students will be targeted for participation.

3 overall instruction by 90 minutes on a weekly basis
Student drop off was changed, allowing students to be in their
classrooms earlier which increased the students instructional
day. Grab and Go Breakfast was used to expedite the breakfast

than 30%. Additional learning time will be gained by revising
the master schedule and moving to a block schedule with
additional time being added daily to reading and mathematics
classes. Stanton will also have extended school day
instructional programs as well as summer programs for students
in need of additional support. The extended day program will
consist of two ten-week sessions with two hour classes running
three days per week. The additional time will be used to target
the needs identified through DCAS administration as well as
3 school-based common assessments and other forms of data.
