VerbalResponseOptionsinSurveyQuestions
Abstract
Surveyresearchisbasedonquestioningandrespondentstypicallyanswertoquestionsbypickingoneofseveral
responseoptions.Theseresponseoptionsarelabelledverballywithtermssuchasveryhappyorfairlyhappy.
Responsescalesdifferinthenumberandwordingofresponseoptionsandthiscouldaffectthedegreeof
happinessdenotedbysuchwords.Ifso,scoresondifferentlywordedquestionsonthesametopiccannotbe
comparedandthisreducestheopportunitiesforresearchsynthesisgreatly.Severalmethodsfortransformation
havebeendevelopedfordealingwiththatproblem,amongwhichtherecentlyproposedscaleintervalmethod
inwhichjudgesratetheintervaldenotedbyverbalresponseoptionsonacontinuous010scale.Thismethod
allowsaviewonthesizeoftheproblem.Applicationofthescaleintervalmethodtocommonlyusedsurvey
questionsonhappinessinDutchlanguagerevealsconsiderabledifferences.Theimplicationsofthisforresearch
synthesisarediscussed.
