Crimes and evil acts prevalent in the society should be checked by the law from
time to time so that the perpetrators dont get a chance to establish an era of
anarchy. This prevents the potential criminals from committing diabolical crimes.
The law and order system decides the punishment as per the magnitude of the
crime. The penalties range from imprisonment for a few days to life imprisonment
and even death penalty.
Death penalty is a punishment that is enforced only on a criminal who commences
some of the most gruesome of crimes such as murder and rapes.
India is one of the few countries of the world that condemns a person to execution
for the crime of molestation of women. The question whether death sentence is an
appropriate punishment for a perpetrator against crimes such as sexual harassment
is a topic of discussion amidst the current society.
Rape is the most gruesome and inhuman of crimes that there can be. The victims
who have to go through this painful experience have their lives scarred with painful
memories. Many lose their mental sanity, suffer from trauma and find it really hard
to recover from the horrible nightmares of their experience. Some others who are
haunted day and night by it may take to extreme measures such as suicide. Apart
from this, it is also to be noted that many such cases go unreported due a feeling of
shyness and shame on the victims side. As such, many perpetrators are never
booked. Some victims who are even less fortunate get murdered brutally after this
horrific act of violence.
In accordance with these views the act of capital punishment seems appropriate in
every sense of the term for such perpetrators. But, at the same time, many other
points should be looked into.
Committing felony as serious as rape is not something that can be treated as a sort
of illness on the part of the perpetrator. It is not a question of choice. It is a result of
lack of moral values and respect towards the women in society. Awareness amongst
the society should be fostered at the elementary level so that every individual turns
out to be a responsible member of the society. Moreover, by death penalty it is
shown to the society that a person had to be killed in order to make him realize the
magnitude of his crimes. This is very unfortunate if we want to turn this society into
one that respects both the genders equally. Moreover, many times it happens that
the perpetrators kill their victims after molestation, owing to the fact that in spite of
the severity of the crime the punishment for both murder and rape is the same.
Hence, to sum up it is seen that women molestation is really a despicable evil and
its perpetrators should be accordingly punished, but, at the same time their
punishment must bring about a change in the thought process of the contemporary
society.
