Maple Lake citizens and

guests celebrated the citys 125th
Quasquicentennial Anniversary
in a big way on Saturday. From
corner to corner, throughout the
day and into the evening, festivities combined to commemorate
the occasion.
The All-School Reunion drew
alumni from near and far, downtown plaques depicted historical
business details, family entertainment and live music appealed to
young and old, beer sampling attracted additional attendees, and
local residents opened their
garages to welcome bargain
hunters.
Garage Sales Galore
Maple Lakes city-wide
garage sale drew a good level of
activity throughout the day. Sale
signs were posted around town,
and foot traffic traveled from
house to house. A few early sellers opened on Thursday but reported that sales were better on
Saturday. Brandy Brown on 7th
St. NW participated for her second year. Although shes tried
scheduling on other weekends,
she said the city-wide sale has
been the best for sales and treas-

ure seekers. On the corner of Oak

Street and Hwy. 55, Pat and Connie Lahr sold vegetable plants
and used accordions. Pat even
played a few tunes to demonstrate their melodic sounds. They
support their non-profit Gardening Wordwide by building 4x4
gardens as an educational mission endeavor to Haiti. On the
same corner, Creekside Sawing
and Vintage Market, held their
grand opening, and new owner
Melanie Marquette reported
good initial interest and will
bring many more creative ideas
to the shop.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
Maple Lake alumni wandered
the halls of the school complex,
reminiscing about high school
years and re-connecting with former classmates and faculty at the
All-School Reunion. Russ Paumen (class of 1950) and wife,
Martha (Elfmann, class of 1953)
purchased her familys farm in
1973 and moved back to Maple
Lake where their six children all
graduated from MLHS, too. A
couple of their grandkids now attend Maple Lake schools.

club members, caught up with
former classmates, Christine
(Jude) Fuller of Monticello and
Cathy (Nugent) Uecker of Annandale in the hallway. Former
school superintendent, Roger
Riesgraf, also toured the high
school. He served as superintendent for 27 years from 1959-1986,
graduating all six of his children
from MLHS and St. Cloud State
University.
Former Band Director Joe
Thomas and his wife, Nancy,
now living in Breezy Point, also
came for the reunion and were
greeted warmly by many former
students. He served as Band Director for 32 years, 1965-1997,
during the marching band hey-

day. Thomas reported taking the

marching band to multiple community parades over summers,
where bands would compete for
top honors with other school
bands, evaluated by an independent judging firm. In 1973, the
MLHS marching band won the
Aquatennial competition and received a special performance invitation from Dublin, Ireland, as
a result. In March 1974, 125 kids
from Maple Lakes band
marched in Dublin on St.
Patricks Day. What an honor and
a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Thomas wife, Nancy, taught
tumbling and gymnastics for
Community Education, but also
helped with the marching band

by choreographing the dance line

and their flag presentation.
Thomas stated he was most
proud of averaging 12-14 parade
competitions per summer, placing in the top 3 awards at all but
nine events in 28 years (more
than 280 parades)! He credited
Nancys assistance but also
strong support from Superintendent Reisgraf who often accompanied the band to the parades.
Thomas five children also graduated from MLHS, and several
grandchildren attend now.
Mary Lou (Baert) Dankowski
(class of 1954) and sisters, Kay
Baert (class of 1966) of Buffalo,
Joan (Baert) DeMars (class of
1971) of Buffalo, with their
brother, Alfred Baert (class of
1941) of Sartell, represented 30
years of Maple Lake graduates.
Mary Lou is a former Homecoming Queen, and Kay and Joan
were both queen candidates for
their classes. Alfred is the
founder of the Minnesota Fishing
Museum and Education Center in
Little Falls, MN. At 91 years
young, Alfred may have been the
most senior alum present.

Irish athletes returned from

the state track and field meet
last weekend with some hardware and some broken records.
Five athletes from the boys
track team competed in six
events, Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 at Hamline University after qualifying at the
section meet the week before at
St. Johns University.
The Irish 4x800-meter relay
team had the top performance
of the weekend for Maple Lake,
earning second place with a
school record time of 8:05.26.
They were second only to Pine
Island who won in a time of just
under eight minutes.
Jackson Willard, Scott Jordan, Andrew Schonnesen and

Ryan Kalinowski made up that

team.
The boys had three goals at
the beginning of the season: 1.
qualify for and run in the Hamline Elite Meet, 2. set the section record, and 3. win the state
championship, coach Ben
Youngs said. They did qualify
for and run in the Elite Meet,
they missed the section record
by a second, and they missed a
championship by one place.
Still, they did better their school
record, one that will likely stand
for many years.
Schonnesen was the only
Irish athlete ever to qualify for
state in four events in one year
and the first ever to earn more
than one medal in a season.
On Saturday, he jumped to
ninth place in the long jump and

eighth place in the high jump.

Neither were his best jumps,
but he still earned his way onto
the medal stand.
Andrew was rushed at long
jump and high jump in particular as they were both at the
same time as his race, Youngs
said. Still, he will leave with
school records in the 4x800meter relay, the 400-meter dash,
the long jump and the triple
jump.
Schonnesen also competed
in the 400-meter run at Hamline
on Friday, but did not make it to
the finals the next day.
His 11th place finish still set
a new school record of 50.77.
The old record, 51.30, was set
by Brad Salveson in 2006.

The Maple Lake Irish softball

team has been to state before,
but when they traveled to
Mankato last week to take on Le
Sueur-Henderson in the first
game of the Class 2A tournament, it was a whole new ball
game.
In 2008 and 2009, the Irish
finished runner-up to New Life
Academy, but that was in Class
A. This year they would be in a
bigger class, with bigger schools
to compete against.
The Irish didnt disappoint.
After defeating Le Sueur-Henderson 4-2 and New Ulm 6-1
they found themselves once
again in a battle for the title, this
time against defending Class 2A
champion, Kasson-Mantorville.

Although they lost 2-1 after

pushing it into extra innings,
Irish coach Tim Knudsen called
it the best championship softball game I have ever seen.
We are very proud of all of
our players, he said. Like
Arnold Schwarzenegger said in
The Terminator well be back.
Maple Lake started the tournament well with a 4-2 win on
Thursday, June 4, in Caswell
Park against Le Sueur Henderson to advance to the semi finals.
The Giants struck first by
scoring a run in the top of the
first. Maple Lake tied it in the
bottom of the fourth then took a
4-1 lead by scoring three runs in
the fifth.
The Giants threatened in the
sixth by loading the bases, but

an Irish double play ended the

advance. Le Sueur-Henderson
scored another run in the seventh
inning, but Maple Lakes Linsey
Rachel threw out the second runner trying to score on the play to
end the game.
Rachel lead the Irish on offense with two hits.
In these types of games you
have to be tough in the circle,
play great defense and get timely
hits, Knudsen said. We got
that today.
Defensively we played like
a brick wall. Nothing got
through us.
Maple Lake pitcher Kennedy
Haney struck out two and gave
up two runs on eight hits in that
first state tournament game.

Our six days of walleye fishing on Lake of the Woods out of
Protheros Post last week for seven anglers was blessed with good
weather and good fishing with only rain for a half day on Tuesday
morning. The group consisted of Mike Muller, George Palmer,

John Brutlags 38 inch Northern was the largest for the

group, caught in the Windfall island area.
Lloyd Brutlag, his son John; Charles Brutlag, Wayne Rusten and
myself. We fished both Minnesota and Canada waters and found the
walleyes hungry.
The bait of choice was night crawlers and after 15 years of fishing
with us we finally convinced Muller to use them. The switch was
good for him financially as he won first fish honors twice ($2),
Palmer twice and yours truly once. It was a week when the walleyes
were either too large or too small, mostly too large for the 19 inch
max. We enjoyed shore lunches four of the days and this year
brought along seven of the Muller Theatre popcorn oil pails which
gave us each a place to sit while enjoying the fresh walleyes.
Our boat, Muller, Palmer and myself, seemed to have an edge on
unusual happenings. On Sunday Muller got into a fight with a walleye and came out second best with a hook through one of his fingers.
I used a pliers to cut off the barb and he pulled out the shaft. On
Tuesday afternoon our fishing time was cut short when the electric

trolling motor went dead. None of us figured out what was wrong,
and actually nothing was. Overuse at a high speed tripped the online circuit breaker which we found out when consulting with a local
Min-Kota dealer on the Angle. You can say it was a lesson learned!
There are several weed beds in the Angle inlet which were again
productive for all of us at various times. Theyre one of Lloyds favorite spots, something he learned from his brother-in-law years ago.
Charles and Wayne had a first and largest contests with them
splitting several times and Charles winning both categories twice.
Lloyd and John caught three keepers out of the roughly 10 fish they
caught Saturday evening with one 22 incher which had to go back
(19 in. Max.). Lloyd also had a 17 inch small mouthed bass on Tuesday.
The 31 card games were a disaster for me winning only one, but
Charles was elated with back-to-back wins and one more for three.
Mike, George, and Wayne each had two wins. John and Lloyd had
to leave Wednesday, John to head back to Dallas, TE for work; and
Lloyd to get ready to change residences in Elk River.
The five of us fished Monument Bay on Thursday, mostly for a
change of scenery, because we needed only fish for our final shore
lunch, having filled out the previous day. Palmer had the hot lure
and outfished Muller and myself more than I care to admit. It was
uncanny, hed

well as mediation services.
Provide information about
court process, practice, and procedure.
Provide instructions on
how to complete court forms,

proceedings, including:
civil actions
conciliation court matters
criminal expungement
divorce, child support, custody, and family law
landlord and tenant law
name changes

will be able to connect visitors
with services that offer legal advice and guidance, they are not
able to directly provide legal advice, strategy, or research.
Minnesota is a nationallyrecognized leader in providing
services to those representing
themselves in court. The new
self-help center in the Tenth Judicial District is the latest step
undertaken by the Minnesota
Judicial Branch to expand services for self-represented litigants
in the state:
The self-help center in
Anoka County will be the fourth
walk-in help center in the state
operated by the Minnesota Judicial Branch. In 2014, three selfhelp centers in Hennepin and
Ramsey counties provided assistance to more than 51,000
people.
The Minnesota Judicial
Branch virtual self-help center
serves self-represented litigants
across the state through online
resources and staff assistance
over the phone and through e-

mail. In 2014, there were more

than 1.7 million visitors to the
Judicial Branch self-help online
resources, along with nearly
20,000 calls and e-mails to staff.
Every courthouse in the
state is equipped with self-help
workstations consisting of a
desk, computer, printer, and
phone, which can be used at no
cost to find court information,
print court forms, and talk over
the phone with self-help staff
about forms, procedures, and
legal resources.
Each of Minnesotas 10 judicial districts coordinate with
volunteer attorneys and other
legal experts to provide free or
low-cost legal advice clinics at
various times throughout the
year.

Ask a
Trooper
by Sgt. Jesse Grabow
Question: I am wondering
how to interpret a law for mechanics that have a class D drivers license. Would they be able
to test drive a semi or bring it
to another shop for repairs without penalty? Another question I
have pertains to electronic log
books. My understanding is that
a truck driver is required to have
a paper log book along with
the electronic book. Is this
true?
Answer: The driver of a vehicle must have the proper class
license even if it is just for a test
drive. For example, a mechanic
takes a truck-tractor without a
trailer for a test drive, the minimum class license would be a
class B Commercial Drivers
License. Also, these mechanics/drivers would also need to be
medically
qualified
(medical/health card.)
A paper log book is required
as a backup if and when elec-

Maple Lake

tronic logging fails. A driver

would be required to have a supply of blank drivers record of
duty status graph-grids sufficient to record the drivers duty
status and other related information for the duration of the current trip. A driver using an
electronic log book is also required to have an instruction
sheet describing in detail how
data may be stored and retrieved
from an automatic on-board
recording system.

County is countdown to
pulling out of forensic lab
by John Holler
Correspondent

For five years, Wright County

has objected to the funding formula used at the Tri-County
Forensics Laboratory it funds
with Anoka and Sherburne counties. Over the last several weeks,
the Wright County Board of
Commissioners has discussed
looking into potentially pulling
out of the Tri-County facility and
going back to the Bureau of
Criminal Apprehensions facility.
At the June 2 meeting of the
county board, the commissioners
received a letter from Anoka
County Administrator Jerry
Soma which wasnt much different from previous responses
wait until the next Tri-County
Lab meeting and discuss the matter there. Wright County believes
it has consistently overpaid for
the lab because the funding is
based 60 percent on population
and 40 percent on usage.
When the topic of how to respond to the letter came up, Commissioner Pat Sawatzke said the
best plan is to give notice that
Wright County will leave the TriCounty lab if the funding isnt
changed.
I think our response should
be on June 23rd when we give
them our 90-day notice,
Sawatzke said. Then the clock is
ticking and people know if they
want to negotiate. Well know by
the 23rd what we find out at the
crime lab. Im hearing the same
thing Ive heard for years now
wait and well do something in
the future.

Commissioner
Christine
Husom said that when the TriCounty lab was founded when it
came to the funding policy it was
put together by the three sheriffs
and county attorney staff.
Sawatzke countered that the
committee has no legal ability to
set budgets.
The irony is that the three
sheriffs and the three county attorneys have no statutory authority over budgeting whatsoever,
Sawatzke said. Its not even in
their jurisdiction relative to budgeting. It should be the commissioners that are in on this because
were responsible for budgeting.
Sawatzke said he believes the
county is continuing to get the
run-around and, at the June 23
meeting, he plans to have county
board minutes showing how
many times he has asked the
funding formula to be changed
and, as of yet, to no avail. He said
the only way to get action is to
make the legitimate threat of
leaving, which would raise the
costs considerably for the other
two counties.
On June 23rd, well send
them notice and let them know
that were serious, Sawatzke
said. We passed a motion that if
we didnt have any action by
June 23rd we send them our notice and I think we should do that.
Then everyone knows were serious. Maybe then theyll realize
that we are serious and want this
changed.

Maple Lake Volunteer Fire
Dept. responded to the following
incidents:
The motorcycle accident on
June 2 in Chatham Twp. and the
fire alma on June 6 at 2:53 p.m.,
6145 105th St. NW, Corinna
Twp. Ten fire-fighters responded
and found nothing to set it off.

day for the outdoor activities, in

spite of the gathering clouds. Informational signs with descriptions and photos were posted at
various downtown lots, depicting
building ownership history and
business establishments over the
125 years of Maple Lakes incorporation. Residents and guests
toured the downtown buildings
on foot, following self-directed
maps; and nearly 100 individuals
stopped in at City Hall to watch
the video portraying Maple Lake
residents and their tales from the
past.
At the Fire Hall, comedian
Don Bursell entertained families
with his juggling prowess and
magic tricks, interacting with the
attentive crowd. Bursell solicited
volunteers from the stands,
mostly eager children, including
brave boys who werent afraid
of a little danger and girls who
could follow directions.
Bursells disappearing egg tricks
and unicycle daring were crowd
pleasers, and several 8 year old
boys assisted a couple lucky
ones risking life and limb for
Bursells unicycle jump as they
laid prone on the floor. The girls
assisted as best they could in
spite of Bursells playful cajoling. He was a hit, and the second
show was just as entertaining as
the first.
Brewfest
One of the best-attended
events of the day was the
Brewfest. Over 20 micro-brewers
and local distributors offered
samples of their beverages for
willing participants in a taste contest. Beer makers from Stillwater
to Lucan (Marshall), Castle Dan-

ger on the North Shore to Fargo,

were on hand to answer questions and interact with participants about amber and pale ales,
porters, stouts, and light to dark
beers, as well as assorted other
alcoholic beverages. Attendees
received a commemorative mini
beer mug for sampling and edible
pretzel lei, strung by Maple
Lakes Ambassadors. Attendee
feedback was very positive, and
there is talk of making this an annual event. City Clerk LeeAnn
Yager was pleased with the
turnout. Over 150 people attended the Brewfest, a great
turnout for this first-time event.
Mitch Gordon and the Unleaded Band provided live country music from an elevated stage
on the corner of Birch and Division Streets in the afternoon during the Brewfest. In the evening,
spectators rock n rolled to music

by the band Outside Recess at the

popular street dance while the
beer garden remained open. Kids
of all ages enjoyed the entertainment and danced the night away
(or until 10:30 p.m.). The Maple
Lake Lions offered hot dogs,
hamburgers and brats for sale,
and gyros, nachos, and tacos-ina-bag were also available through
another vendor, as were cotton
candy, snow cones and popcorn.
Rain, lightning and thunderstorms approached from the
west, threatening the evening festivities but held off until the last
song finished. However, the severe weather danger canceled the
fireworks, which will be reserved
for a later event.
Maple Lakes 125th anniversary celebration will be recorded
as a huge success, and those who
attended became a part of its ongoing history in a fun way!

Outside Recess was the entertainment for the street

dance at Maple Lakes 125th Anniversary event.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into
nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must
fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once
in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier
it gets to solve the puzzle!

ball at me. He was only 3 year
old. It hurt a lot. What if your
brother threw a soccer ball at
you? He didn't know it would
hurt. He only wanted to play

I Am Not Praying, or Am I
Once when I was 7 years old,
in the car on the way to first
Communion, I was just thinking
of some random thing. A few
minutes after I started thinking, I
look down and you won't believe
what I saw, my hands were
folded. Do you now how it happened because I don't. This weird
happening is a secret prayer that
I don't know. -Levi Smail

I was running to the couch at my

How I Got A Magnet
In My Ear
Once last month I got a tiny
magnet in my ear. I told my Mom
and my Mom brought me to the
doctor and the doctor tried tweezing it out. He almost got it but it
hurt so I moved and the tweezers
cut me then the doctor left the
room and came back with a 5"
magnet and he got it out. -Steven

How I Got Bit by a Dog
Once when I was 18 months I
was at a parent family reunion
and a person brought a dog. I
wanted to pet the dog, so I did.
The dog bit me above my left
eye. Did it hurt? Did I need
stitches? Did it get infected? Ask
the dog's owner before you try to
pet it. Not all dogs are nice. Hans Peterson

The Boy That Cried

"Wheee!"
Once when I was 2 years old I
was at Wal-Mart and Mom
needed "just a few things." Mom
turned her head for just a second,
and I was gone. Where was I
found? I was running near the
movie isle yelling "Wheee!"
After Mom found me we went
home. -Ben Ogram
My Birdie
Once when I was 6 years old
it happened at Whispering Pines.
It all started at the tee box at hole
number 9. I was golfing with my
Grandpa, it was my turn to hit the
ball. I got it on the green but I
didn't get it in the hole. My
Grandpa has never got a hole in
one and I got closer then he has
ever got it. -Larson Melgaard
How I Smashed My Finger
Once when I was 7 we decided to get chicks and we put
them in the base meant and about
1 month later they were getting
out. So we decided to put a stock
tank down stairs and when my
dad was rolling it down stairs and
I was at the bottom and the stock
tank slipped out of my dad hands
and it came rolling down the
stairs. It hit my middle finger.
Ow!! I cried. The End. -George
Elsenpeter
When I Got Lost
Once when I was 6 years old I
was at the Mall. I wasn't paying
attention and my family left me.
And I was scared because I
thought my family was gone. I
walked around and looked for my
family. How would you feel if
you thought your family would
never find you in a huge place
like the mall? And all of a sudden
my sister Savanna was walking
towards me. And I was so happy
she had found me! -Alicia Goelz
My Lucky Day
Riding Snowmobile
Once when I was 5 years old I
was at my grandparets when this
all happened. I was riding in the
yard and I decided to go in the
ditch and thats when I hit the
powerpole. I got stuck. My
Granpa helped me get out. "Were
you ok," "yes." Lucky because I
did not get hurt and my snowmobile did not have a dent. -Luke

about their experience
Grace Carlson - When I visited Fort Snelling I liked seeing
the hospital and how they made
you feel better. I also liked the
Black Smith room and learning
how they made nails. My favorite thing about the trip was
seeing the Round tower. I also
learned how they put gunpowder in the guns.
Abbie Lipinski - When we
went to Fort Snelling it took an
hour to get there. My favorite
part was the school house there.
It had benches, quills with ink
for writing, and pencils. At the
end of the trip we got to pick
something out at the gift shop. I
got stones and a whistle.
Xaner Sabinash - My fa-

vorite part of Fort Snelling was

the tower and when we went
into the hospital. I liked all the
different ways they had to cut
and help with stomach aches. I
didnt like how they had to take
your blood out at the hospital
though, and their beds were really lumpy.
Maddy McLeod - My favorite part of Fort Snelling was
the Round Tower. It is the oldest
building in Minnesota. I also
liked how they did their laundry. The doctors office was
cool to see too. I liked everything about this field trip.
Michael Sparks - My favorite things to visit at Fort
Snelling were the Round Tower,
the school, and the Blacksmith
shop. My favorite was the
Blacksmith shop. It was cool to
see how a guy made a nail for

the old school. Its loud in the

shop because someone pounds
on metal with a hammer. The
school was also cool back in
those days because instead of
pens they used feathers with ink
for writing. Also the Round
Tower was cool because there
are slits in the walls on the 1st
and 2nd floors for the people at
war to see and shoot out of.
Logan Salmela - I learned
when we went to Fort Snelling
that the Round Tower is at least
200 years old, the oldest building in Minnesota. The ladies
had to bring their dirty clothes
down to the river to wash them.
The Blacksmith had to make
nails and other things out of
mettle. The Hospital would do
the best they could to make you
feel better so that you wouldnt
die.
Julia Jerome - My favorite
part of Fort Snelling was the
school because I like how the
desks were on the side. The Fort
Snelling Coronel had a big
house, even bigger than mine.
Having to stay home and do
chores sounded boring. The
hospital was kind of creepy. Im
glad I will never have to go to
that one.
Sadie Purcell - I had a lot of
fun at Fort Snelling. We went
into the Round Tower and
walked all the way up to the
very top. I could see everything
up there. The next thing we got
to do was go into the school
house that was from 200 years
ago. We learned a lot of cool
stuff there. Then we went to another place where they did
chores. Then we went to the soldiers place, saw a house, a hospital, and last but not least the
Blacksmith shop. I really had a
lot of fun on this field trip.
Nick Jost - When we went
to Fort Snelling I saw a lot of

cool things. The hospital did

weird things to help people feel
better. I also like the Blacksmith
shop because I got to see how
they make tools out of metal
and hot fire. The Round Tower
was awesome because you
could see everything from the
top of it. I thought the school
house was cool too because
there was only one small building where a lot of students from
all grades went.
Ty Rollings - The school
house at Fort Snelling had a bell
that they used instead to tell
what time it was. The soldiers
were not allowed to go across
the arch way of the Round
Tower because it was private.
They also needed to carry bags
of gunpowder. The flag there
only had 24 stars, but now that
we added states it has 50.
Kenlyn Marsicer - The first
thing we did when we got to
Fort Snelling was watch a
video. It was about the history
of Fort Snelling. Then we went
to the Round Tower. Next we
visited the school house and to
an area where she taught us
about the chores they had to do
back then. We went to other
places too. My favorite place
was the hospital. When it was
time to go I didnt want to
leave.
Haley Nelson - When we
went to Fort Snelling my favorite thing to see was the
Blacksmith shop. When we
went there the Black smith
made a nail and when he was
done he gave it to my friends
Mom. We went to the hospital
before the Balcksmith and the
guide showed us how they
made people feel better. At the
end of the day we got to go to
the gift shop. I bought three
presents one for my Mom, Dad,
and for my sister, Edie.

Lakers win against Hutchinson and Delano

By Matt Brown
Sports Writer

The Maple Lake Lakers continued their winning streak and

weather problems last week with
a pair of wins in league play and
a rainout. Wednesdays game
against Cokato (a makeup for a
rainout) was cancelled due to
rain. The weather held for the
rest of the week and the Lakers
got a pair of road games in before the Highway 55 tournament
this week.

Hutchinson 1
Maple Lake faced the
Hutchinson Huskies Friday night
looking to avenge the loss they
had there last season. Despite
getting hits and a few Husky errors, it took until the seventh inning for the Lakers to score.
Bert Marsnik got the first RBI
followed by a nice hit by Matt
Bergstrom with guys on second
and third to score a run. Luke

Fobbe was tagged out at home

but it took a great play to get
him.
Mitch Wurm went all nine for
Maple Lake, shutting out the
Huskies for eight innings before
giving up one in the ninth.
Wurm gave up four hits and no
walks while collecting ten strikeouts.

The Lakers offense sprung to
life Sunday despite only scoring
six runs. The team had thirteen

hits, including the first doubles

of the year for Graham Brown,
Nate Johnson, Bert Marsnik, and
Todd Fuller. The hits did not
string together much until the
five-run seventh inning. Six different players had RBIs, showing the Lakers can get it done
from the top to the bottom of
their lineup.
Jeremy Schmidt got it done
on the mound, going all nine innings, giving up six hits and
three walks while tallying nine
strikeouts. Schmidt gave up his
first run of the season and three
of his four walks during this
game, astounding numbers considering he has 30 innings
pitched. That earned run is also
the first earned run he has given
up since getting engaged on Saturday.

In addition to being a member

of the 4x800-meter relay team,
Ryan Kalinowski also competed
in the 800-meter run at state. He
finished 10th, missing finals by
only one place. He also set his
personal best time of 1:59.24.
Charlie Stejskal finished 11th
in the long jump at Hamline,
missing qualifying for finals by

one place as well, but he was

thankful for being able to participate in the state meet, his coach
said.
The kids all had mixed feelings, Youngs said. They are
competitive, so they are always
looking to do better, yet they realized they made a huge impact
on the program.

The win advanced the Irish to
the semi-finals later that afternoon where they took on New
Ulm and won 6-1.
The Irish had just five hits
against the Eagles, but they took
advantage of all of them to reach
the championship game.
New Ulm errors lead to four
unearned runs for Maple lake in
the third inning. Emily Webb
plated a run with an RBI triple
then she later stole home to
score the fourth run of the game.
The Irish added two more to
the scoreboard in the seventh off
hits by Amber Klug and Linsey
Rachel.
New Ulm got its lone run in
the bottom of the third.
New Ulm is very good at
playing small ball, Knudsen
said. In the last few years they
have won the state tournament a
couple of times.
Taylor Pilger led the Irish offensively with two hits. Webb

had an RBI triple and Haney allowed five hits, one run and
fanned three.
We played with a whole lot
of passion and did what we had
to to move on to the championship game, Knudsen said.
Kasson-Mantorville pitcher
Maddie Damon gave the Irish
problems right from the start,
Friday, June 5, in the battle for
the state Class 2A title.
Damon, who is headed to
Purdue to pitch for the Boilermakers, kept the Irish off balance with her speed changes,
from her 64 mph fast ball to her
47 mph change-up; then there is
her rise ball, Knudsen said.
Damon ended the tournament
with 43 strikeouts, 16 of them
against the Irish in the finale.
She was definitely the best
pitcher we faced, Knudsen said.

2015 American League
All-Stars: Plattners Picks
The 2015 Major League Baseball season is over a third of the
way in the books and that means
All-Star voting is just around the
corner. With anybodys guess at
whats going on in the topsyturvy American League standings
being as good as, if not better,
than mine, lets at least get one
thing straight. Here are the thirtythree players most deserving to
fill out the American League AllStar roster, in Cincinnati, on Tuesday, July 14th.
2B Jose Altuve HOU:
.296, 5 HR, 27 RBI, 17 SB and 26
R. The 56 Venezuelan has become the ultimate table-setter,
over the past few seasons. Since
2012, Altuve has 638 hits and 141
stolen bases. The Astros go as he
goes and so far in 2015, that has
been to a surprising 34-24 record,
the third best in all of baseball.
OF Mike Trout LAA: .283,
16 HR, 33 RBI, 8 SB, and 42 R.

Is there anything Mike Trout cant

do? Its simply amazing to think
this guy is still only 23 years old.
In just his fourth full season in the
majors, this will be Trouts fourth
All-Star appearance. Hes also the
reigning AL-MVP. Sit back and
take it all in when you watch
Trout, by the time hes finished
hell be one of the all-time greats.
1B Miguel Cabrera DET:
.320, 12 HR, 38 RBI, 1 SB, and
31 R. Speaking of all-time greats,
over the last decade Cabreras had
one off year in which he hit just
.292. During that stretch, the ninetime All-Star compiled 1,925 hits,
345 HR, and 1,195 RBI. Oh, and
you can add a World Series title
and two MVP awards to his resume, too. Not too shabby.
OF Nelson Cruz SEA:
.329, 18 HR, 39 RBI, 1 SB, and
33 R. Cruz wascruising when
MLB whacked him with a 50game suspension for his involvement in the 2013 Biogenesis case.
He came to Seattle off a career

berg. Maple Lake came back in

the top of the sixth to tie the
game with a two-out double by
Chloe Callahan. The game
stayed tied until the 10th when
Kosberg drove in her second run
of the game, this time with a
bases-loaded single.
Haney matched Damon pitch
for pitch, allowing just seven
hits in 10 innings for the Irish,
two runs and one walk. Overall,
she allowed just four earned runs
in 23 innings throughout the entire tournament.
Our effort today was relentless, Knudsen said. Our girls
kept their heads up. They know
they left it all on the field. They
all should be proud of themselves.

year of 40 HR and 108 RBI, with

the Baltimore Orioles and hopes
to help the Mariners (my American League World Series pick, if
you remember) turn things
around after a very disappointing
start to the season, that finds them
at just 25-32.
3B Josh Donaldson TOR:
.308, 15 HR, 40 RBI, 3 SB, and
46 R. While, its difficult to figure
out what kind of average Donaldson will hit for, we definitely
know his bat has some pop. After
three seasons in Oakland, Donaldson finds himself leading the
Blue Jays in HR. Not bad, considering the two bats behind him in
the order are Jose Bautista and
Edwin Encarnacion, who have
combined for a bare minimum of
60 HR in each of the past five seasons.
OF Torii Hunter MIN:
.281, 8 HR, 36 RBI, 1 SB, and 30
R. His leadership is the main reason Minnesota boasts the best
record in the American League
and Hunter is well on his way to
ten straight seasons with at least
15 HR and 75 RBI. Great to have
you back in Minny, Torii!!
C Stephen Vogt OAK:

and is on pace to top 30 HR and

major league start for the 30 year
old, who floated around the minors for eight seasons.
SS Xander Bogaerts BOS:
.296, 2 HR, 21 RBI, 4 SB, and 23
R. Chalk this selection up to a
horrid group of AL shortstops.
Geez, Derek Jeter leaves the
game and look what we get left
with, something called Xander
Bogaerts!! In all seriousness, the
second year pro is having an okay
season. Just not All-Star worthy if
you ask me, but Im forced to
pick one shortstop, so Xander it
is.
SP Felix Hernandez SEA:
9-2, 2.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, and
8.85 K/9 innings. Its scary to
think how many wins King Felix
could have, had he not played for
the Mariners all these years. I
mean, the guys so good, he won
the Cy Young Award in 2010 with
a 13-12 record. Seattle finished
61-101 that year, by the way.
With a good team, his 134 career
wins could be closer to 200, but
youve got to give the man credit
for his loyalty to the Mariners.

The board set a date of 9 a.m.

Monday, June 22 to tour the BCA
facility in St. Paul. The commissioners also proposed a tour of
the Tri-County site July 1. But,
whether the scheduled Aug. 11
meeting is moved up as a result,
Wright County appears ready to
submit their notice of leaving.
In other items on the June 2
agenda, the board:
* Authorized signatures on a contract with the Minnesota Department
of Corrections for the DOC to house
prisoners at the Wright County Jail at
a rate of $55 a day. Sawatzke said
that when he became a commissioner
in 1991, the rate was $55 a day
pointing out the irony that the state
can increase the local costs for programs like Sentence to Service, yet
the price they pay for boarding prisoners has been $55 a day for the last
25 years.
* Accepted the minutes of the
technology committee meeting,
which was established to stay ahead

EOE/AA

of the curve in changes in technology. The minutes included a mission

statement for the committee that it
will serve as a platform for departments to discuss needs and trends,
evaluate and prioritize technologyrelated projects and provide recommendations for budget and
infrastructure resources. The board
scheduled the next meeting for 11
a.m. Wednesday, June 17, at which
point a committee charter will be presented.
* Approved five replacement officers in the sheriffs department.
Due to a rash of retirements and resignations over the last three months,
the sheriffs department is currently
eight officers short of their standard
number of employees, a number that
will increase to 10 next month. The
biggest issue with the delay is that
there is an exhaustive process of
background checking and psychological evaluations that stretches out
two or three months to complete,
making it a difficult situation for the
sheriffs department because replac-

ing employees who opt to move into

the private sector makes it hard to replace them in a timely fashion.
* Authorized attendance at the
Association of Minnesota Counties
District 5 meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday,
June 11 at the Sherburne County
Courthouse in Elk River.
* Adopted a resolution for the
Veterans Services Department to accept a $15,000 grant with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affair
to purchase equipment upgrades for
the department.
* Approved the April revenue/expenditure guidelines. Through the
one-third point of the year, both the
budgets and revenues are close to
what was anticipated and nothing
stands out as being a budget concern.
* From the personnel committee
minutes, approved proceeding with a
market adjustment policy to develop
criteria to identify solutions for attracting qualified Information Technology candidates. The issue isnt at
the entry level or the top level, but
local governments have a difficult

time competing with the private sector for those deemed to be experienced mid-level employees.
* Referred discussion of security
camera upgrades wtih the building
committee.
* Approved a resolution authorizing an eviction action on a property
at 1262 County Road 5 N.W. in Albion Township. The property has
been a problem for the county for
years, including large piles of junk
and inoperable vehicles. The property went tax forfeit to the State of
Minnesota, which now owns the
property. People have lived on the
property during summer months over
the past couple of years at times and
the resolution will only come into
play if someone is living on the property at some point during the summer.
* Approved three renewals of
liquor licenses Cokato Town &
Country Club in Cokato Township,
the Clearwater Lions Club in Clearwater Township, and Olsons Truck
Stop in Silver Creek Township.
